The model framework is composed of analytical dynamic models for important physical and technical domains of realization of mechatronic functions, such as multibody dynamics, digital information processing and electromechanical transducers. Building on the modeling concept of a technology-independent generic mechatronic transducer, concrete formulations for electrostatic, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrodynamic transducers are presented. More than 50 fully worked out design examples clearly illustrate these methods and concepts and enable independent study of the material.

Book excerpt: Electrification of propulsion systems and auxiliaries continue to penetrate the on-road and off-road vehicles, marine and aerospace industries. This is due to multiple advantages over systems with pure mechanical power transmission from the primary engine to the load. Design of electric drives includes analysis of dynamic interactions between various components that form the powertrain, which may include several inertia elements, compliance elements with damping. Selection of power-train components must be carefully evaluated to ensure that the system does not exhibit undamped oscillatory responses during various transients. In the selection process, modeling mechanical systems using electrical analogs is a well-established approach for analyzing their dynamic properties and designing systems. The wide availability of simulation tools has broadened the use of model-based control approaches to realize appropriate performance objectives. These tools also enable modeling and designing systems across multiple physical domains such as electro-mechanical systems. Nevertheless, interconnection of an electro-mechanical system such as a motor drive to a complex mechanical load or to a complex electrical network can be a challenging problem requiring artful selection and tuning of system and controller parameters. Study and evaluation of dynamic performance of electric drives coupled with mechanical systems has typically been carried out using classical linear system analysis tools such as root-locus, pole-zero plots etc.\\This work presents the evaluation of electric drive dynamics using the concept of impedance separation and impedance shaping. These are based on electric circuit analysis tools and the formulation of impedance-based approach that simplifies the analysis for the interconnected electromechanical systems and consists of the following: - Hybrid circuit representation of system components including power converters like electric machines, gear boxes etc.- Application of Time Constant Analysis to determine the impedance and transfer functions of interest of the interconnected electro-mechanical systems. - Use graphical methods for rapid determination of Impedance and transfer functions with pole-zero factors. - Partition complex cascaded electromechanical systems into modular interactive subsystems that ensures interconnection stability. - Passive and Active Impedance shaping to ensure electromechanical interconnection stability. An example electro-mechanical system of a three phase PMSM motor driving a resonant load is used to highlight the approach, along with analytical, simulation and prototype experimental results that validate the methods. Together, this thesis presents a unified design methodology that includes the application of Time Constant Analysis, Topological Frequency Domain Analysis and Impedance Separation concepts for the modeling, that is is effective to perform stability analysis and design of interconnected electromechanical systems.
