Book The Community Center Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Community Center Classic Reprint written by L. J. Hanifan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Community Center Chapters I to V deal with some of the more fundamental principles underlying the community center movement as related to rural life conditions. Chapters VI to X are intended to indicate the nature and the scope of com munity center activities and, partly by discussion and partly by illustration, to offer some suggestions for carry ing on the community center work. Chapters XI and XII contain a number of programs which may be found suggestive to teachers or other community leaders in making definite plans for the meetings. Chapter XI deals with entertainment programs, while Chapter XII suggests programs bearing upon country life. But since these two kinds of program may be used interchangeably, the reader would do well in actual practice to regard these two chapters as one. In reading a book of this kind, one is apt to read the chapter first and then give more or less casual attention to the exercises at the end of the chapter. This method of reading might be improved by first examining the exercises as a guide to the reading. It is believed that the use of the book for reading circle purposes may be made most helpful by the latter method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Community Center, Vol. 5: List of Lantern Slides With Notes on the Community Schoolhouse Education is a public function in a democracy. Social center activities can be made important factors in education. Recreation is recognized as an essential factor; accordingly, community recreation becomes community business; it cannot be left to individuals; Few fathers can provide their sons with playgrounds. Many mothers fail to make social centers of their homes for their daughters. Just as it is beyond the ability of the average family to give its children the right kind of schooling at home, so it is beyond its power to provide them with the right kind Of recreation. Book Community Centers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Community Centers Classic Reprint written by Raymond V. Phelan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Community Centers The Community Center is a need of our time. In the middle ages, authority, hierarchy, divine right, and status ruled the world. The eighteenth century brought forth ideas of natural rights of life, liberty, and property, of equality before the law, of freedom in all departments of life and activity. There was to be a mini mum of government and of regulation. Fair play and justice de manded that the arena of life be held wide open for everybody. Experience, however, has taught us that this job of holding open the gate involves in itself government regulation, and that an open arena without rules for the game often becomes a case of a free fox in a free hen roost. Free opportunity in the arena of life is necessary to fair play and justice. There must be also regulation of the game of life. Both the open gate and the regulated game call for effective laws and alert, intelligent public opinion. To promote such laws and such public opinion, society must know itself. People must come to gether, get acquainted with one another, sympathize with one another, co-operate with one another. The big answer to this need of popular co-operation is the Community Center. Book Development of a Leisure Time Program in Small Cities and Towns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Development of a Leisure Time Program in Small Cities and Towns Classic Reprint written by Ella Gardner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of a Leisure-Time Program in Small Cities and Towns For many years great interest has been shown in providing facilities for wholesome play for children. More recently this interest has been extended to leisure-time programs that include recreational, educational, and cul tural activities for all members of the family. It is not only in the larger cities - where programs under trained leadership have been provided at playgrounds and community centers for the recreation of people of all ages - that this interest has found expression; in many towns and smaller centers intelligent Cooperation has made it possible to enrich the leisure of the people through greater use of the leadership and facilities at hand. In any city or town a number of different agencies or organizations will be found that are interested in the recreational needs of a particular group or, in some instances, of the city or town as a whole. These organizations represent a wide variety of social interests and include schools, churches, civic and community organizations, club groups of all types - especially those organized on a national basis - settlements, social groups, and special groups concerned primarily with the development of recreational activities and facilities. Any community plan must take into consideration the serv ices and programs of these organizations in order that there will not be a duplication of work and that effort will be directed to the aspects of an adequate leisure-time program that have heretofore been most neglected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music for Everybody: Organization and Leadership of Community Music Activities The Situation has given rise to serious concern on the part of all intelligent Americans. On every hand the questions are being asked: How can these conditions be changed? IS the remedy economic? IS it political? IS it educational? IS it religious? What remedies give promise of even a partial cure? How can the nation be induced once more to assume wholesome attitudes and to give itself wholeheartedly to those types of work upon which national prosperity depends? While other and very wise men have been making elaborate and technical studies of the Situation, the writers of this volume, in the light of their truly remark able war experiences, have proposed a practical solution. They are experts in diagnosing conditions of low morale. They are intelligently familiar with the common enemies of morale whether in the army, the factory, the great apartment house, or any other center of common interest. Under a great variety of conditions they have been successful in creating a friendly spirit where suspicion reigned. They have substituted contentment for dis content. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreation: Its Character Building Influence, Its Part in the Community Life Bhind every activity of the Recreation Department stands the guiding hands of professionally trained leaders. This somewhat intangible quality is in part inherent and partly gained through intensive study and wide experience. A recreation setup may be very rich as a physical plant such as well-equipped community centers, playgrounds and swimming pools; these features are very important in a well-rounded program but unless they are supervised and directed by persons who have the philosophy of recreation the objectives will not be realized. Recreation leadership has become a profession. A vast body of literature, both technical and for the layman, has been written. The fast pace of modern living with the many complexities which it has brought about has created problems which were unknown a few years ago. The minds of individuals of all ages must be directed into healthy channels during their free hours. Recreation Leaders the country over noticing this, are directing their programs to this aim. While it is true the colleges and universities each year are giving more ade quate training to recreation leaders, it is equally true that as a profession recrea tion leaders face the necessity of continuous training by staff members while in service. Professional growth in a marked degree inevitably results from carefully organized and wisely guided committee work. This is accomplished by the dime? Tors' meetings, the training courses and the development of a directors' hand book with its rich opportunity for work in the field of program planning and leadership. Conferences - local, district and regional, are sources for professional growth and inspiration. Continuous reading and study of recreational publications afford opportunity for development. The Recreation Training Institute held in San Francisco in March, 1938, was conducted by the National Recreation Association, in collaboration with the Recreation Commission. The purpose was to present new. Interpretations of objectives in recreation; to establish high standards of execution in leisure time guidance; to introduce a fresh viewpoint in recreation workers and to help them increase their skills in conducting activities. Book School and Community Service

Download or read book School and Community Service written by Robert E. Cavanaugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School and Community Service: Experiments in Democratic Organization Since the war was waged for the perpetuation of democracy, for the safeguarding Of democratic institutions, and for the strengthening of free peoples, it is self-evident that the United States not only must adhere to democratic ideals and policies in its relations with other nations, but it must also progressively apply the same principles within the nation. We committed ourselves, by our war or peace aims, to a program Of practical democracy at home. While the war was in progress no less than in times of peace, we were obligated to retain the democracy which we had so painfully acquired as well as to perfect and advance it farther. During the reconstruction period and after, we must continue and redouble our efforts. Experiments in democratic organization are being constantly made in this country. Two such experiments are partially described in this bulletin: the creation during the war Of Community Councils by the Council Of National Defense with the aid Of the us. Bureau of Education and other centralized agencies; and the creation of High School Councils or community centers in numerous neighborhoods in school districts Of Indiana to coordinate the activities of normal neighborhood life and of war service. The two experiments aimed from opposite directions to develop the processes of democratic organization: the one was projected and stimulated from the central government at Washington; the other was a spontaneous growth in local communities fostered by Indiana agencies.
