But if Colossians is a word from a God who does not change, and is therefore relevant to His people in every age, how are we to understand and interpret Paul's thought and expression today? Dr. Ralph Martin tackles this problem by asking what the apostle meant when he set out to instruct, correct and exhort the original readers of the epistle. From this inquiry he deduces certain principles of belief and conduct which may still be applied even though our situation differs in external details from that in which the Colossian Christians found themselves. The underlying intellectual and religious question is the same--what is man's relation to the cosmos and the powers that rule it? The predominant theme of the book, as of the epistle, is the glory and Lordship of the risen Christ, in whom Christian believers have come to fullness of life. Professor Martin examines the Colossian heresy, and shows that life in Christ brings complete liberation from mental and spiritual bondage to those merely human mystical notions that had only an appearance of wisdom. From doctrine he moves on, with Paul, to the therefore of everyday Christian conduct, in the context of family relationships, prayer, and the Church's mission in today's world. So far from being out-of-date or irrelevant, the Epistle to the Colossians might well have been written (as indeed in one sense it was!), for our modern space-age. It shows the person of Jesus Christ as the answer to humanity's questioning about the cosmos of which we form such a frighteningly insignificant part. Above all it sets out the Jesus of history as the Lord of glory, the Master of time and space, and shows the essential continuity between the two. It is Professor Martin's first aim to make the background and the message of the Epistle clear in its original setting, and then to show its particular relevance to the present day.

He points out that the doctrine of "free will" leads to this dangerous position. Rick Phillips explores the relationship to loving God and obeying His law. Some today believe that love is all that matters, and that the law as a guideline to love is extinct. Then this author shows that Biblical sanctification is the antidote to and the opposite of legalism. Steven J. Jesus himself said that even if you only look at a woman lustfully you have already committed adultery in your heart. Priests and those in leadership within the Church have often been guilty of misusing the laws of Moses by teaching and demanding strict, literal or even excessive conformity to the Old Testament Law. Such practice puts one under the law, and even places the law above the gospel. In his letter to the Galatians Paul teaches that to be a Christian you do not need to be circumcised and that an over emphasis on keeping the laws, including keeping the Sabbath results in legalism and ultimately brings God's Wrath. The opposite of legalism is license - doing whatever you want whenever you want and that you are only responsible to yourself rather than a higher authority. This also brings God's wrath. In this book David Pawson explains how through Christ's death and resurrection, we have been released from the legalism of the Old Testament Laws (which no one is able to keep all of the time), not to do the opposite which will result in sin by doing whatever we please, whenever we want, but through Christ we have been given true liberty ...the liberty to choose not to sin, by walking in the Spirit.

Central to the Colossian philosphy's outlook was the pursuit of divine knowledge or wisdom through (1) the order of the cosmic elements (2.8, 20); (2) the bodily ascetism that unencumbered the investigative mind (2.18, 23); and (3) intermediaries between heaven and earth (angels and demons; 2.18). These features are typical of Middle Platonism in the New Testament era. At the same time, the philosophy's calendar (2.16) and stress on humility (2.18, 23) indicate Jewish and Christian influences. Hence, the Colossian philosophy appears to be a distinctive blend of popular Middle Platonic, Jewish, and Christian elements that cohere around the pursuit of wisdom.
