Book Coastal Zone Management Imperative for Maritime Developing Nations

Download or read book Coastal Zone Management Imperative for Maritime Developing Nations written by B.U. Haq and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic transformation of the coastal zone continues at a steady pace, especially in the developing maritime countries, where coastal resources are often crucial to national economies. However, exploitation of these resources is often indiscriminate, ill planned, or carried out without adequate scientific knowledge. This leads to rapid resource depletion, and often irreversible environmental degradation. The 1992 Rio de Janeiro UN Conference on Environment and Development recognized the expediency of an integrated and sustainable use of all coastal resources, functions and services grounded on sound scientific data. The present volume is based on the 1994 international workshop Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and brings together contributions by leading specialists both on basic concepts and on applications of coastal management. The work is divided into six parts, dealing with the conceptual framework of ICZM; regional and global aspects of coastal management; environmental assessment in ICZM; capacity building and technology transfer; monitoring and environmental analysis; and case studies and status of ICZM plans. The book also incorporates an interactive ICZM planning module, COSMO, which can be of use in designing a management plan for a coast. Attention is also given to long-term environmental effects of present-day actions. It is hoped that COSMO will prove an additional learning tool for ICZM practitioners and enhance the value of the book. This work is intended to give a broad coverage of conceptual and technical aspects of ICZM, and will be of use to operational executives as well as students of ICZM, environmental economists, policy-makers and senior managers in the international development agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations. It can be recommended as a textbook and as a reference work.

Book Global Change and Integrated Coastal Management

Download or read book Global Change and Integrated Coastal Management written by Nick Harvey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the world’s population lives close to the coast and is highly dependent on coastal resources, which are being exploited at unsustainable rates. These resources are being subject to further pressures associated with population increase and the globalization of coastal resource demand. This is particularly so for the Asia-Pacific region which contains almost two thirds of the world’s population and most of the world’s coastal megacities. The region has globally important atmospheric and oceanic phenomena, which affect world climate such as the Asian Monsoon and the El-Niño Southern Oscillation phenomena. The Asia-Pacific region also has highly significant marine diversity but over the last few decades, coastal resources such as mangroves, coral reefs and fisheries have experienced large-scale depletion. The need to find appropriate management solutions to these and other coastal issues is made more complex by the need to take account of international scientific predictions for global climate change and sea-level rise which will further impact on these coasts. The idea for this book arose from a meeting of coastal scientists in Kobe, Japan in May 2003. The meeting was organized by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), an inter-governmental network, comprising 21 member countries, for the promotion of global change research and links between science and policy making in the region.

Book International Boundaries and Environmental Security Frameworks for Regional Cooperation

Download or read book International Boundaries and Environmental Security Frameworks for Regional Cooperation written by Gerald Blake and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-08-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are international boundaries necessarily an obstacle to effective environmental management? the ever-increasing competition between states for access to natural resources may represent a threat not only to ecological stability but to regional and even global security. Or perhaps transboundary environmental issues can actually have a positive impact on international relations, encouraging states to cooperate and building confidence between previously hostile neighbours. Drawing on a wide range of case studies, The papers in this volume explore these important issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Contributions from practitioners and technical experts complement detailed studies by geographers, lawyers, and political scientists. This mix yields a unique survey of (1) problems when environmental systems cross international borders and (2) transboundary cooperative projects designed to reduce the threat of ecological catastrophe and political conflict between competing neighbours around the world. The conclusion: Despite the daunting challenges there exist grounds for optimism. This collection is based on the proceedings of an international conference held in Singapore in June 1995, co-hosted by the Centre for Advanced Studies And The Department of Geography, National University of Singapore And The International Boundaries Research Unit, University of Durham, United Kingdom and is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the complex relationship between boundaries, environment and international security.

Book Protecting the Marine Environment From Land Based Sources of Pollution

Download or read book Protecting the Marine Environment From Land Based Sources of Pollution written by Daud Hassan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global findings estimate that 80 per cent of marine pollution originates from land-based sources and is trans-boundary in nature. These problems persist in spite of a number of legal and policy initiatives taken to protect the marine environment. This volume explores the applications and shortcomings of current international regimes in addressing these issues. The book identifies the sources and effects of land-based marine pollution and analyzes the problems of controlling them. Management principles, policy and regulation are examined at both regional and international level. The author discusses the strengths and weaknesses of existing regimes and advances a more effective international legal framework. The text provides a valuable insight into an important area of international environmental law. It will be of interest to researchers and policy-makers working in this area.

Book Making Ocean Policy

Download or read book Making Ocean Policy written by Francis W. Hoole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in response to the increasing interest in the making of ocean policy, this collection of original articles surveys the history of U.S. ocean policy, ocean policy advocacy, and the struggle within government to determine how best to develop and implement a sensible ocean policy. The increasing complexity of the issues, programs, and policies related to marine and coastal zone matters and the increasing number of government agencies and interest groups formed to deal with these matters reflect the growing awareness of their importance. But, reflect the editors, in an enormously complex world, where many interests are in conflict and where information is tentative and incomplete—yet often overwhelmingly abundant—there are few easy solutions to ocean policy problems.
