Book American Public Education and the Responsibility of its Citizens

Download or read book American Public Education and the Responsibility of its Citizens written by Sarah M. Stitzlein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public school systems are central to a flourishing democracy, where children learn how to solve problems together, build shared identities, and come to value justice and liberty for all. However, as citizen support for public schools steadily declines, our democratic way of life is increasingly at risk. Often, we hear about the poor performances of students and teachers in the public school system, but as author Sarah M. Stitzlein asserts in her compelling new volume, the current educational crisis is not about accountability, but rather citizen responsibility. Now, more than ever, citizens increasingly do not feel as though public schools are our schools, forgetting that we have influence over their outcomes and are responsible for their success. In effect, accountability becomes more and more about finding failure and casting blame on our school administrators and teachers, rather than taking responsibility as citizens for shaping our expectations of the classroom, determining the criteria we use to measure its success, and supporting our public schools as they nurture our children for the future. American Public Education and the Responsibility of its Citizens sheds an important light on recent shifts in the link between education and citizenship, helping readers to understand not only how schools now work, but also how citizens can take an active and influential role in shaping them. Moving from philosophical critique of these changes to practical suggestions for action, Stitzlein provides readers with the tools, habits, practices, and knowledge necessary to support public education. Further, by sharing examples of citizens and successful communities that are effectively working with their school systems, Stitzlein offers a torch of hope to sustain citizens through this difficult work in order to keep our democracy strong.

Book Schools and Cultural Citizenship

Download or read book Schools and Cultural Citizenship written by Pat Thomson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Why study the arts at school?’ This book offers a fresh perspective on this question. Informed by rigorous research, the book argues that the arts help young people to develop key skills, knowledge and practices that support them to become both critical appreciative audiences and socially engaged cultural producers. Drawing on a three-year study in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Tate art museum, Schools and Cultural Citizenship sets out an ecological model for cultural citizenship that goes beyond the classroom to include families, the media and popular culture. The authors introduce new, interrelated concepts to change how we consider arts education. Chapters provide fresh insights, guidance and practical recommendations for educators, including: An introduction to the Tracking Arts Learning and Engagement research Detailed case studies featuring arts-rich schools and arts-broker teachers Analysis of the importance of immersive professional development for teachers and the benefits of partnerships with arts organisations An ecological model for cultural citizenship Focusing on the ways in which cultural citizenship can be taught and learnt, this is an essential read for arts educators, education staff in arts organisations, researchers, postgraduate students, arts education activists and policy makers.

Book What Kind of Citizen

    Book Details:

  • Pages : 110 pages

Download or read book What Kind of Citizen written by Joel Westheimer and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As democracy faces increasing struggles around the globe, there has never been a more important time to talk about civic education and the core democratic purposes of schooling. What Kind of Citizen? asks readers to imagine the society they would like to live in and then shows how schools can make that vision a reality. This updated edition responds to the many challenges that have occurred since this book was first published, such as a global pandemic, social justice protests, a rise in autocratic leaders, anti-woke laws, and more. Westheimer brings his now-classic text up to date with groundbreaking analyses of current policies, including those in Florida, Texas, and Arizona; standardized testing; prohibitions on teaching about race and racism; plus a new section on teacher education. There are many ways to teach children and young adults to engage critically with their world, but instead teachers are forced to test-prep for a narrow set of academic subjects. This book shows readers how schools can get back on track by creating more engaging, more democratic learning. PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION— “A timely and important book that will prove valuable to a wide audience . . . a valuable addition to teacher education programs that seek to challenge preservice teachers to understand themselves as stewards of democracy and justice.” —Jonathan Zimmerman, New York University “Highly recommended for anyone interested in Ôreconnecting education to democracy’. . . (Westheimer’s) constant connection with everyday experiences makes the reading very pleasurable, and reminds readers of the important place of emotion in education and politics.” —Nel Noddings, Stanford University “This book will have anyone with a vested interest in the future citizens of our world pausing to question the education system as we know it . . . A good read for teachers in need of some inspiration or for anyone looking for more insight into education in America.” —William Ayers, activist and author

This book was released on 2007-03-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the recommendations of the Crick report on citizenship education ('Education for citizenship and the teaching of democracy' which can be downloaded at http://www.qca.org.uk/downloads/6123_crick_report_1998.pdf) published in September 1998, the subject was introduced into the school curriculum in 2002, on a compulsory basis for secondary schools and as part of the non-statutory framework for primary schools. The Committee's report assesses the progress made during the last four years to deliver quality citizenship programmes and examines the barriers that exist to its successful implementation. It finds that, when well done, citizenship education motivates and inspires young people, but the quality and extent of these programmes are still inconsistent across the country. This patchiness needs to be tackled head-on, and progress accelerated, requiring strong support from the DfES and Ministers as well as action from those on the ground. The Committee welcomes the Government's decision to accept the recommendations of the report by Sir Keith Ajegbo which highlighted the need for citizenship curriculum to have a closer focus on issues of identity, diversity and belonging. More can be done to disseminate between settings good practice information about approaches that are working in other institutions, particularly in relation to 'whole-school' (or college) approaches that develop opportunities for active citizenship, although it is essential that programmes are locally-owned and relevant to the particular context. The development of the workforce is also important to the success of citizenship education, and although the expansion of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) citizenship certificate programme is welcome, more resources are needed to develop capacity in initial teacher training places for citizenship education.

Book A Senior Citizen s Pre Election Workbook

Download or read book A Senior Citizen s Pre Election Workbook written by Frank Patrick and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since I have been taught to never criticize without suggesting a solution I have made some that I believe would allow our elected officials to solve last century's problems before a decade or two of this century passes. Suggestions: SET ONE TERM LIMITS FOR ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS ALLOWING THEM TO WORK FULL TIME WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT RELECTION. This would allow those who want to, to acknowledge GOD without the worry of being POLITICALLY INCORRECT harming their reelection chances. . ELIMINATE THE SECULAR LIBERAL'S PLANTATIONS OF DEPENDENCY . ELIMINATE THEIR MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR ABORTION BUSINESS . ELIMINATE THEIR SOCIALIST METHIODS IN THE BLOATED INEFFECIENT AND WASTEFUL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES After reading my workbook please make you own recommendations to your lawmakers. GOD BLESS Over the years, as a concerned citizen, I have written our elected officials and others asking why they quit using the proven guidelines of the Bible when writing laws dealing with people. After not receiving an answer and seeing the decline of moral values in our country I decided to put together this workbook. As a Christian I have begged our elected officials to end the killing of millions of babies in their mothers' wombs with abortion on demand. I have also asked those who treat others as inferior to themselves by their actions of excusing individual responsibility and rewarding immoral behavior to eliminate their PLANTATIONS OF DEPENDENCY. Their actions have sentenced several generations to a sub par standard of living benefiting only themselves.
