PURPOSE AND PLAN William Temple was trained as a philosopher and lectured on phi losophy at Oxford (1904), but his concern for labor, education, journalism, and the Church of England led him away from philosophy as a profession. Enthroned in 1942 as Archbishop of Canterbury, Temple persisted in applying his Christian position to the solution of the problems of the day. He will be remembered for his contributions in many areas of life and thought: his work in the ecumenical movement, and his writings in theology and social ethics attest to the variety and depth of his concern, but of special significance is his contribution toward the construction of a distinctly Christian philosophy relevant to the twentieth century. Although Temple did not work out a systematic formulation of his Christian philosophy, the bases for a Christian philosophy are never theless evident in his position. It is the purpose of the present work to enter sympathetically and critically into the major facets of Temple's position and to weave together, as far as is legitimate, the separate strands of his thought into a meaningful, even if not a completely unified, Christian philosophy. The intent is not simply to present Temple's conclusions on a variety of philosophical and theological issues; rather, Temple's position is developed systematically, and the arguments for the conclusions at which he arrived are carefully ex pounded.

According to this model, in Jesus Christ the eternal Word of God was translated into human flesh and form. Thus in Jesus Christ the invisible became visible, the inaudible became audible, the intangible became tangible, and the impalpable became palpable (cf. I John 1:1-4). This translation is brought about inasmuch as the heart of Jesus is the heart of the Word-made-flesh because it is the heart-of-the-Word made flesh. All the sentiments of the Word towards his Father, towards the Holy Spirit, and towards the whole of creation find expression in the human heart of Jesus Christ. The very being of the Word is thus expressed for us in the humanity of Jesus. That humanity is taken up into and hypostatically united to the Word of God through the medium of Word-consciousness, namely the consciousness in the human mind of Jesus of being the Word expressed in human form.

Contemporary historical scholarship, on the other hand, has called into question the reliability of the church's version of this story, and thereby raised the question as to whether ordinary people can know its historical truth. In this book, a leading philosopher of religion argues that the historicity of the story still matters, and that its religious significance cannot be captured by the category of "non-historical myth." The commonly drawn distinction between the Christ of faith and the Jesus of history cannot be maintained. The Christ who is the object of faith must be seen as historical; the Jesus who is reconstructed by historical scholarship is always shaped by commitments to faith. Evans looks carefully at contemporary New Testament studies, and the philosophical and literary assumptions upon which it rests, to show that this scholarship does not undermine the confidence of lay people who believe that they can know that the church's story about Jesus is true.
