Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Bible expert Bart Ehrman reveals how Jesus’s divinity became dogma in the first few centuries of the early church. The claim at the heart of the Christian faith is that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and it is not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman reveals how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty, Creator of all things. But how did he move from being a Jewish prophet to being God? In a book that took eight years to research and write, Ehrman sketches Jesus’s transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus’s followers had visions of him after his death—alive again—did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God. And what they meant by that was not at all what people mean today. Written for secular historians of religion and believers alike, How Jesus Became God will engage anyone interested in the historical developments that led to the affirmation at the heart of Christianity: Jesus was, and is, God.

Book Was Jesus God

  • Author : Richard Swinburne
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

  • ISBN : 0191623458
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Was Jesus God written by Richard Swinburne and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-01-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orderliness of the universe and the existence of human beings already provides some reason for believing that there is a God - as argued in Richard Swinburne's earlier book Is There a God ? Swinburne now claims that it is probable that the main Christian doctrines about the nature of God and his actions in the world are true. In virtue of his omnipotence and perfect goodness, God must be a Trinity, live a human life in order to share our suffering, and found a church which would enable him to tell all humans about this. It is also quite probable that he would provide his human life as an atonement for our wrongdoing, teach us how we should live and tell us his plans for our future after death. Among founders of religions, Jesus satisfies uniquely well the requirement of living the sort of human life which God would need to have lived. But to give us adequate reason to believe that Jesus was God, God would need to put his 'signature' on the life of Jesus by an act which he alone could do, for example raise him from the dead. There is adequate historical evidence that Jesus rose from the dead. The church which he founded gave plausible interpretations of his basic message. Therefore Christian doctrines are probably true.

Book Is Jesus Truly God

  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Is Jesus Truly God written by Greg Lanier and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of Jesus’s divinity has been at the epicenter of theological discussion since the early church. At the Council of Nicea in AD 325, the church fathers affirmed that Jesus the Son of God is “true God from true God.” Today, creeds such as this are professed in churches across the world, and yet there remains confusion as to who Jesus is. To some, Jesus is a radical prophet—nothing more than a footnote in history. To others, Jesus is the only Son of God, fully God and fully man—the author of history entering history. Is Jesus Truly God? is an accessible resource, bridging the gap between the pulpit and the pew as it traces the rich roots of creedal Christology through the Scriptures, strengthening the reader’s understanding of Jesus as fully God and fully man.

Book excerpt: I am a simple man writing an unbiased look at one of the Bibles’ hottest topics; Is Jesus God? I give you the simple facts, plain Scripture, and a straight forward view of what is being said in the Bible minus any religious mumbo-jumbo. You will be taken around the Bible to see where Scripture talks about the topic of Jesus being God. I researched, studied, and prayed about what I was finding over a five year period. This book is what has come from that painstaking adventure. I grew up in a Baptist church. I have not attended any traditional schooling for Biblical learning and have not been trained by any theological professors so my mind has not been tainted to their views. Scripture says that you don’t need anyone to teach you the Word, the Holy Spirit will lead you to it. What you get from me is what the Holy Spirit and I have found together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his recent book How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher From Galilee historian Bart Ehrman explores a claim that resides at the heart of the Christian faith— that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. According to Ehrman, though, this is not what the earliest disciples believed, nor what Jesus claimed about himself. The first response book to this latest challenge to Christianity from Ehrman, How God Became Jesus features the work of five internationally recognized biblical scholars. While subjecting his claims to critical scrutiny, they offer a better, historically informed account of why the Galilean preacher from Nazareth came to be hailed as “the Lord Jesus Christ.” Namely, they contend, the exalted place of Jesus in belief and worship is clearly evident in the earliest Christian sources, shortly following his death, and was not simply the invention of the church centuries later.

Book Jesus the Only Way to God

Download or read book Jesus the Only Way to God written by John Piper and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the evangelical church at large was ever too confrontational in its evangelism, those days are gone. In our shrinking, pluralistic world, the belief that Jesus is the only way of salvation is increasingly called arrogant and even hateful. In the face of this criticism, many shrink back from affirming the global necessity of knowing and believing in Jesus. In Jesus, the Only Way to God, John Piper offers a timely plea for the evangelical church to consider what is at stake in surrendering the unique, universal place of Jesus in salvation.

Download or read book Jesus Christ Sun of God written by David Fideler and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 1993-10-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Christian Gnosis did not spring up in isolation, but drew upon earlier sources. In this book, many of these sources are revealed for the first time. Special emphasis is placed on the Hellenistic doctrine of the "Solar Logos" and the early Christian symbolism which depicted Christ as the Spiritual Sun, the illumination source of order, harmony, and spiritual insight. Based on 15 years of research, this is a unique book which throws a penetrating light on the secret traditions of early Christianity. It clearly demonstrates that number is at the heart of being. Jesus Christ, Sun of God, illustrates how the Christian symbolism of the Spiritual Sun is derived from numerical symbolism of the "ancient divinities."

Book Jesus the Son of God

Download or read book Jesus the Son of God written by D. A. Carson and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2012 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is a foundational confession for all Christians, much of the theological significance of Jesus's identity as "the Son of God" is often overlooked or misunderstood. Moreover, this Christological concept stands at the center of today's Bible translation debates and increased ministry efforts to Muslims. New Testament scholar D. A. Carson sheds light on this important issue with his usual exegetical clarity and theological insight, first by broadly surveying Jesus's biblical name as "the Son of God, and then by focusing on two key texts that speak of Christ's sonship. The book concludes with the implications of Jesus's divine sonship for how modern Christians think and speak about Christ, especially in relation to Bible translation and missionary engagement with Muslims across the globe.

Book The Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ written by David K. Bernard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now a substantial scholarly consensus for the emergence of a high or divine Christology very early and from a Jewish context, but the questions of "how" and "why" need further study. Within the framework of traditional Jewish monotheism, Paul and other early Christians used the language of deity to describe Jesus. To investigate their view of Jesus, the author examines Paul's discourse in 2 Cor 3:16–4:6, employing insights from rhetorical criticism and Oneness Pentecostal Christology. He explains how early Christians proclaimed the deity of Jesus within their monotheistic Jewish context. He then identifies socio-rhetorical reasons for and practical consequences of the monotheistic deification of Jesus.

Book excerpt: Why are so many Christians living such empty, fruitless lives? Why is their faith so weak, their character so shallow? Perhaps it's because they have merely inherited someone else's Jesus. They've relied on what their family, friends, or pastors have told them about Jesus rather than discovering the living Lord themselves. A true storyteller and a teacher with a heart for ministry, Mark Hall traces the downward spiral caused by spiritual compromise with the World, and then charts the upward road to wholeness and health that comes when we claim our very own Jesus. When that happens, believers experience authentic fellowship with the one living God. Through fascinating personal stories, scriptural insights, and practical interactive studies, Your Own Jesus will set readers free to live without compromise with the Jesus they come to know intimately and love fully.

Book How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God

Download or read book How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God written by Larry W. Hurtado and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God? Larry Hurtado investigates the intense devotion to Jesus that emerged with surprising speed after his death. Reverence for Jesus among early Christians, notes Hurtado, included both grand claims about Jesus' significance and a pattern of devotional practices that effectively treated him as divine. This book argues that whatever one makes of such devotion to Jesus, the subject deserves serious historical consideration. Mapping out the lively current debate about Jesus, Hurtado explains the evidence, issues, and positions at stake. He goes on to treat the opposition to -- and severe costs of -- worshiping Jesus, the history of incorporating such devotion into Jewish monotheism, and the role of religious experience in Christianity's development out of Judaism. The follow-up to Hurtado's award-winningLord Jesus Christ (2003), this book provides compelling answers to queries about the development of the church's belief in the divinity of Jesus.
