It compares and contrasts NR with LTE, and gives a concise and highly accessible description of the key technologies in the 5G physical layer, radio access network layer protocols and procedures. This book also illustrates how the 5G core and EPC is integrated into the radio access network, how virtualization and edge computer fundamentally change the way users interact with the network, as well as 5G spectrum issues. This book is structured into six chapters. The first chapter reviews the use cases, requirements, and standardization organization and activities for 5G. These are 5G requirements and not NR specifically, as technology that meets the requirements, may be submitted to the ITU as 5G technology. This includes a set of Radio Access Technologies (RATs), consisting of NR and LTE; with each RAT meeting different aspects of the requirements. The second chapter describes the air interface of NR and LTE side by side. The basic aspects of LTE that NR builds upon are first described, followed by sections on the NR specific technologies, such as carrier/channel, spectrum/duplexing (including SUL), LTE/NR co-existence and new physical layer technologies (including waveform, Polar/LDPC codes, MIMO, and URLLC/mMTC). In all cases the enhancements made relative to LTE are made apparent. The third chapter contains descriptions of NR procedures (IAM/Beam Management/Power control/HARQ), protocols (CP/UP/mobility, including grant-free), and RAN architecture. The fourth chapter includes a detailed discussion related to end-to-end system architecture, and the 5G Core (5GC), network slicing, service continuity, relation to EPC, network virtualization, and edge computing. The fifth and major chapter describes the ITU submission and how NR and LTE meet the 5G requirements in significant detail, from the rapporteur responsible for leading the preparation and evaluation, as well as some field trial results. Engineers, computer scientists and professionals with a passing knowledge of 4G LTE and a comprehensive understanding of the end to end 5G commercial wireless system will find this book to be a valuable asset. Industry standards have multiplied, though not all of these, in our view, are realistic and meaningful. Increasing importance has been ascribed to the Charged Device Model (CDM) versus the Human Body Model (HBM) as a cause of device damage and, presumably, premature (latent) failure. Packaging materials have significantly evolved. Air ionization techniques have improved, and usage has grown. Finally, and importantly, the government has ceased imposing MIL-STD-1686 on all new contracts, leaving companies on their own to formulate an ESD-control policy and write implementing documents. All these changes are dealt with in five new chapters and ten new reprinted papers added to this revised edition of ESD from A to Z. Also, the original chapters have been augmented with new material such as more troubleshooting examples in Chapter 8 and a 20-question multiple-choice test for certifying operators in Chapter 9. More than ever, the book seeks to provide advice, guidance, and practical ex amples, not just a jumble of facts and generalizations. Book excerpt: This book employs computer simulations of ‘artificial’ Universes to investigate the properties of two popular alternatives to the standard candidates for dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE). It confronts the predictions of theoretical models with observations using a sophisticated semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Understanding the nature of dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) are two of the most central problems in modern cosmology. While their important role in the evolution of the Universe has been well established—namely, that DM serves as the building blocks of galaxies, and that DE accelerates the expansion of the Universe—their true nature remains elusive. In the first half, the authors consider ‘sterile neutrino’ DM, motivated by recent claims that these particles may have finally been detected. Using sophisticated models of galaxy formation, the authors find that future observations of the high redshift Universe and faint dwarf galaxies in the Local Group can place strong constraints on the sterile neutrino scenario. In the second half, the authors propose and test novel numerical algorithms for simulating Universes with a ‘modified’ theory of gravity, as an alternative explanation to accelerated expansion. The authors’ techniques improve the efficiency of these simulations by more than a factor of 20 compared to previous methods, inviting the readers into a new era for precision cosmological tests of gravity.
