Download or read book Architecture and Waste written by Hanif Kara and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture and design currently play a minor role in the design and construction of industrial building types, especially waste-to-energy facilities. Through comparing the well-established waste-to-energy industries in Sweden with less established engagements in the northeast of the United States, opportunities and lessons are revealed. This book presents a refreshed, design-led approach to waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, reflecting work done at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). Architecture and design currently play a minor role in the design and construction of industrial building types, especially waste-to-energy facilities. Architects have a role to play in integrating waste-to-energy plants physically and programmatically within their urban or suburban contexts, as well as potentially lessening the generally negative perception of energy recovery plants.

Download or read book A History of Silence written by Alain Corbin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silence is not simply the absence of noise. It is within us, in the inner citadel that great writers, thinkers, scholars and people of faith have cultivated over the centuries. It characterizes our most intimate and sacred spaces, from private bedrooms to grand cathedrals – those vast reservoirs of silence. Philosophers and novelists have long sought solitude and inspiration in mountains and forests. Yet despite the centrality of silence to some of our most intense experiences, the transformations of the twentieth century have gradually diminished its value. Today, raucous urban spaces and a continual bombardment from different media pressure us into constant activity. We are losing a sense of our inner selves, a process that is changing the very nature of the individual. This book rediscovers the wonder of silence and, with this, a richer experience of life. With his predilection for the elusive, Corbin calls us to listen to another history.
Download or read book Conix Architects written by Conix Architects (Firm) and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Belgian architecture firm Conix was founded in 1979 and has, in nearly three decades led by Christine Conix, architect Sylvie Bruyninckx and interior designer An Steylaerts, grown to a staff of 55. No other firm is as widely represented along the quays of Antwerp, but that accomplishment doesn't convey the exceptional diversity of their projects, both residential and business. In recent years, Conix has received a great deal of international attention for one project in particular: the just-completed renovation of the midcentury design landmark, the Atomium, in Brussels, a replica of an atom that stands more than 300 feet high, with a different space in each 60-foot sphere, from a children's museum to a restaurant. "Conix Architecten" features an exceptionally sleek interior design and the book's pages are even edged in silver. With special emphasis on the Atomium, it features a selection of outstanding recent projects in 200 illustrations.
Download or read book The Lure of the Sea written by Alain Corbin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corbin argues that with few exceptions people living before the eighteenth century knew nothing of the attractions of the coast, the visual delight of the sea, the desire to brave the force of the waves or to feel the coolness of sand against the skin. The image of the ocean in the popular consciousness was coloured by Biblical and mythical recollections of sea monsters, voracious whales, and catastrophic floods. It was perceived as sinister and unchanging, a dark, unfathomable force inspiring horror rather than attraction. These associations of catastrophe and fear in the minds of Europeans intensified the repulsion they felt towards deserted and dismal shores.
Download or read book Toward an Anthropology of Ambient Sound written by Christine Guillebaud and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume approaches the issue of ambient sound through the ethnographic exploration of different cultural contexts including Italy, India, Egypt, France, Ethiopia, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, and Japan. It examines social, religious, and aesthetic conceptions of sound environments, what types of action or agency are attributed to them, and what bodies of knowledge exist concerning them. Contributors shed new light on these sensory environments by focusing not only on their form and internal dynamics, but also on their wider social and cultural environment.
