Book excerpt: Durante 1969-1970 se llevo a cabo en la Estación Experimental Quilamapu, Chillán, la siguiente experiencia, con los objetivos que a continuación se indican -Desarrollar un plan forrajero para ganado bovino de carne, usando las principales especies forrajeras existentes en la zona Centro Sur de Chile. - Elaborar dentro del plan forrajero algunos sistemas de producción de carne para novillos holando-europeos nacidos en primavera. - Determinar la influencia de tres niveles de ganancia (alto, medio y mantención) durante la etapa 8-12 meses del novillo, producen en el sistema completo de producción de carne. De los resultados obtenidos, podemos concluir que: - Según el sistema animal utilizado se produce una variación en la carga animal, el tiempo necesario para lograr los 500 kg de peso, la producción por hectárea y la relación entre suelo para pradera de pastoreo y suelo para cosecha de forraje. - Mientras mayor es el uso de subproductos, mayor es el rendimiento por hectátreas. La producción de carne por hectárea para el año redondo es de 838-978 kg al depender sólo de forrajes. Al suplementar con subproductos durante dos inviernos la producción por hectárea alcanza a casi dos toneladas de peso vivo. - En el sistema de venta a los 19-20 meses, el nivel de gaancia media (uso de heno) disminuye en cierta medidad la producción por hectárea comparando con el nivel de mantención (pastoreo solo), pero presenta la ventaja de lograrse un animal con mayor peso de comercialización. Por otro lado, en caso de engorda final, el nivel medio permite alcanzar 500 kg a los 2 años sin necesidad de una etapa posterior de pastoreo, lo cual aumenta la carga y por consiguiente la producción por hectárea cuando se compara con el nivel de mantención.

Book excerpt: El presente trabajo caracterizó diferentes proveedores de carne de ternero de una empresa de la Región del Maule, incluyendo la estructura y funcionamiento de los tipos de sistemas productivos, a través de la recolección de datos asociando sus diferentes características relacionadas a su sistema de producción de carne. Para llevar a cabo este estudio, se trabajó en las comunas de Parral y Retiro, ciudad de Linares, Región del Maule. Se consideró 68 productores que operan como proveedores. La información se obtuvo de registros de certificación PABCO para los datos productivos, y mediante encuestas para los datos socioeconómicos. Estos datos se sometieron a un análisis de estadística descriptiva básica y un análisis no paramétrico a través de tablas de contingencia que demostraron correlaciones entre dos variables, provenientes del análisis de los productores, predios y producción, las cuales demostraron que los diferentes tipos de sistemas de crianza de terneros están conformados por un gran número de fortalezas, las cuales pueden posibilitar, a productores y sus predios, programar diversos planes para mejorar sus ingresos y beneficios.

Book excerpt: The Mediterranean area shows a great diversity of livestock systems, depending on local resources and traditions, but also on the networking space where informational resources are available for producers. During the last decades, a lot of innovations have been conceived or introduced in the Mediterranean area, allowing livestock systems to remain competitive. The book looks at two main issues: firstly, it gives an updated review on the main innovations that significantly changed the activities of livestock production in the Mediterranean area in the recent past. Secondly, the focus lies on the extent to which these innovations improve the efficiency, ensure the socio-cultural basis or reduce the environmental impact of livestock systems. One major finding is a new vision of innovating systems based on the distinction between regulated innovation (when aims are fixed) and innovative design (when aims are questioned). Innovations reported in the book are dealing with a set of concerns. They concern the production techniques, the work organization, the equipment and infrastructures, the collective features for selection, reproduction, feeding or sanitary devices. They also concern the local organization such as product labelling, new dynamics around local breeds, collective rules for supply basin or approaches of new products for new markets. More recently, some innovations focus on environmental impacts of livestock production, due to an increasing consciousness of those kinds of problems. In the final part of the book, a round table copes with a crucial question: are traditions in Mediterranean livestock activities to be considered an obstacle or a source of innovation? This book provides a set of updated information and knowledge useful for researchers, students, extension services and policy-makers in the field of animal science.
