Book excerpt: By measuring the muon induced N16 Beta-radioactivity and the low energy gamma-transitions in this nucleus, estimates have been obtained of the absolute capture rates for negative muons stopping in oxygen and producing N16 in three of the lowest lying states. The results are: muon( - ) + O16 (O+) to N16 (2( - ), ground state) + neutrino = 6,300 = 700/sec to N16* (O( - ), 120 keV) + neutrino = 1,100 = 200/sec to N16* (1( - ), 392 keV) + neutrino 1,730 = 100/sec. Within the limits noted in the text, the rate to the O( - ) state indicates the value for the pseudoscalar coupling constant lies between 10g sub A and 26g sub A. (Author).

Book excerpt: The total muon capture rate for s-wave muons can be accounted for by the Primakoff expression which gives the dependence of this rate on the mass number A and the proton number Z of the absorbing nucleus. The expression is a simple three parameter phenomenological formulae which accurately describes these rates from light weight nuclei to heavy nuclei. These parameters relate to the isospin structure of the squared isovector operator which appears in a sum rule approach to such rates. A microscopic analysis of the parameters appearing in the capture rate expression is presented in the light of recent developments concerning photonuclear reactions. A shell model analysis is given and it is found that the predictions of the unperturbed shell model and also Hartree-Fock theory are in complete disagreement with the data. Considerable improvement is obtained when long range correlations are included in the ground state wave function of the absorbing nucleus. 21 references.

Book excerpt: Assuming the validity of the Universal Fermi Interaction hypothesis, comparison of theoretical single level muon capture rates with experimental data may prove valuable in determining the form and extent of renormalization of the nucleon-lepton weak interaction Hamiltonian density (the magnitudes of the induced form factors). To this end the muon capture transition probabilities were calculated for the C12 to B12 (ground state to ground state) and the O16 to N16 (O(+) to O( - )), (O(+) to 1( - )) transitions. Analysis of experimental results for these rates permits the computation of a region of possible values for the induced pseudoscalar (G sub p) and induced tensor (G sub T) form factors. The results are qualitatively in agreement with theoretical predictions of G sub p = 8(Lambda), where G sub T = O. The muon wave functions are corrected for finite nuclear size and relativistic effects, which are found to be not entirely negligible, even for the ratio of O16 capture rates. (Author).
