The original version has a top speed of 408.00 km/h (253.52 mph). It was named Car of the Decade (2000-2009) by the BBC television programme Top Gear. Designed and developed by the German Volkswagen Group (based on the Bentley Hunaudieres concept) and produced by Bugatti Automobiles SAS at their headquarters in Chateau Saint Jean in Molsheim (Alsace, France), the Veyron's chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed by Jozef Kaba of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being conducted under the guidance of former Peterbilt Trucks engineer and now Bugatti Engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber. A number of special variants have been produced, including two targa tops. In December 2010, Bugatti began offering prospective buyers the ability to customize exterior and interiors colours by using the Veyron 16.4 Configurator application on the marque's official website. The car is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti company. The 16.4 refers to 16 cylinders and 4 turbochargers. Book Top Gear s Midlife Crisis Cars

Download or read book Top Gear s Midlife Crisis Cars written by Matt Master and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following up on Crap Cars and My Dad Had One of Those, Top Gear celebrates the midlife crisis with the definitive collection of the flashest, fastest, most impractical cars ever to be found in the driveways of otherwise perfectly sensible men. Drawing on the high level of expertise in this area, Top Gear explores the phenomenon of motoring and the midlife crisis, identifying over 50 classics of the genre across four desperate decades. From Ford Capri to Ferrari Testarossa, it celebrates the flashest, fastest and most ridiculous attempts to cover a bald spot, meanwhile offering a profound insight into the complex psychology of a middle-aged man and his quest for eternal youth. Top Gear's Midlife Crisis Cars both rejoices and recoils at the time-honoured tradition of flushing the children's inheritance on something you're too arthritic to get into in the first place.

Detailed descriptions, history and technical information accompany every entry, making this the most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the contemporary classic car. This book also highlights the world's dream cars that were built as showcases but were never actually mass-produced. Book excerpt: Behind the walls of an old farm somewhere in France, several dozen antique classic cars had been neglected for decades, enjoying a kind of 100-year sleep. Surrounded by a profusion of plants and practically forgotten by their owner, no one knew of the collection until, in 1983, permission was granted for it to be photographed. The commission fell to one of Europe's leading photographers, Herbert W. Hesselmann, who promised never to disclose the identity of the owner or location of the collection, and the story made headlines all over the world. This haunting compilation expertly captures the mystery and drama of the vintage car collection of the century, and is accompanied with commentary by Halwart Schrader. Although the collection shown here no longer exists, the untouched patina of these cars still exerts a powerful and mysterious fascination, inviting viewers to explore a forgotten era.
