Book Live Television

Download or read book Live Television written by Stephanie Marriott and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2007-11-18 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The study of television, still the most powerful of modern media, has long been fascinated by its capacity for ′liveness′. Marriott offers an insightful analysis of the complexities of this phenomenon, particularly its increasingly vital connection with the use of new media. A timely contribution to our understanding of media events, 24 hour news and the phenomenology of mediated experience." - Andrew Tolson, De Montfort University "In the steps of Marshall McLuhan and Alfred Schutz, Stephanie Marriott offers us a timely and sustained reflection upon the nature of mediation and the changing qualities of the live experience made possible by television. Elegant, lucid, witty and thought-provoking, her account will become a canonical text in television studies." - Martin Montgomery, University of Strathclyde In a fragmenting multichannel and multiplatform global broadcasting environment live television continues to attract huge audiences, bucking the trend towards narrowcasting and niche markets, yet little of a comprehensive nature has been written about the live television event. In this fascinating book, Stephanie Marriott engages in a close and detailed analysis of the nature of live television. She examines the transformations in our experience of time and space which are brought about by the capacity of broadcasting to bring us the world in the moment in which it is unfolding, situating the live television event in the context of an expanding and increasingly complex global communicative framework. Building her argument by means of a series of case studies of events as diverse as the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001, the 2005 London bombings, election night coverage and live sports coverage, Marriott provides a meticulous and articulate account of the way in which live television mediates the event for its audience. This book will be essential reading for students and academics working in media, cultural studies, cultural sociology, and linguistics, and is an exciting new contribution to the field of broadcast talk and media discourse.

Book Strategic Communication and its Role in Conflict News

Download or read book Strategic Communication and its Role in Conflict News written by Marc Jungblut and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marc Jungblut extends existing knowledge on the role of strategic communication in conflict news by examining four violent conflicts. He relies on an automated content analysis of texts by 52 strategic communicators, such as politicians, NGOs, social movements, as well as on the international news coverage in 17 media outlets. By analyzing over 80,000 texts in seven languages, the book demonstrates that media visibility is almost exclusively granted based on ethnocentrism and elite status. The journalistic framing of conflict events, however, is much more context-dependent and shows a higher degree of independence from elite voices and strategic communication in general.

Book Elections and TV News in South Africa

Download or read book Elections and TV News in South Africa written by Bernadine Jones and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes television news seriously. Over the course of nine chapters, Elections and TV News in South Africa shows how six democratic South African general elections, 1994–2019, were represented on both local and international news broadcasts. It reveals the shifting narratives about South African democracy, coupled with changing and challenging political journalism practices. The book is organised in three parts: the first contains a history of South African democracy and an overview of the South African media environment. The second part is a visual analysis of the South African elections on television news, exploring portrayals of violence, security, power, and populism, and how these fit into normative news values and the ruling party’s tightening grip on the media. The final part is a conclusion, a call to action, and a suggestion to improve political journalistic practice.

Book Handbook of Research on Consumption Media and Popular Culture in the Global Age

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Consumption Media and Popular Culture in the Global Age written by Ozgen, Ozlen and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass production and diversification of media have accelerated the development of popular culture. This has started a new trend in consumerism of desiring new consumption objects and devaluing those consumption objects once acquired, thus creating a constant demand for new items. Pop culture now canalizes consumerism both with advertising and the marketing of consumerist lifestyles, which are disseminated in the mass media. The Handbook of Research on Consumption, Media, and Popular Culture in the Global Age discusses interdisciplinary perspectives on media influence and consumer impacts in a globalizing world due to modern communication technology. Featuring research on topics such as consumer culture, communication ethics, and social media, this book is ideally designed for managers, marketers, researchers, academicians, and students.

Book Global Media Dialogues

Download or read book Global Media Dialogues written by Lee Artz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of its kind, brings together leading scholars from multiple perspectives in a serious dialogue about continuity and change in global media production and content. Looking at a wide swath of the world, these authors show the emergence of transnational collaboration in global television and film production across national borders that seem to transcend national cultures and identities. At the same time, traditional class analysis of such phenomena is reframed within the rise of myriad social movements for equality, democracy, human rights, and defense of the environment. What are the effects of media, local or global? Does the West continue to dominate or is cultural imperialism waning? With original chapters written by leading scholars from a variety of disciplines, this book will appeal to students and scholars interested in global media communication, cultural studies, and international political economy.
