Book Stepping Forth into the World

Download or read book Stepping Forth into the World written by Edward J. M. Rhoads and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese Educational Mission was one of the earliest efforts at educational modernization in China. As part of the Self-Strengthening Movement, the Qing government sent 120 students to New England to live and study for a decade, before they were abruptly summoned home to China in 1881. This book, based upon extensive research in local archives and newspapers, focuses on the experiences of the students during their nine-year stay in the United States. Historians of modern China will find this book highly relevant because of its detailed account of one of the major projects of the Self-Strengthening Movement. To date, there are at most two credible studies in English and Chinese on the Chinese Educational Mission; both are deficient in source citation and tend to dwell on the students' experiences after their return to China rather than during their stay in America. This volume will also appeal to specialists in Asian-American studies, for its comparing and contrasting the experiences of the Chinese students with those of other Chinese in the United States during a period of rising anti-Chinese sentiment, which culminated in the enactment of Chinese Exclusion in 1882. This book offers a slightly different perspective than most other works on the nature of the anti-Chinese movement, which may have been more class-based rather than race-based. The compare and contrast of students from China with those from Japan, which also sent large numbers of students to New England at roughly the same period of time, will be of interest to East Asian comparative historians as well. Edward J. M. Rhoadsis a professor emeretus in history at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author ofChina's Republican Revolution: The Case of Kwangtung, 1895-1913andManchus and Han: Ethnic Relations and Political Power in Late Qing and Early Republican China, 1861-1928. "Rhoads has meticulously constructed the individual and collective histories of the 120 young men and boys sent by a beleaguered late Qing government to live and acquire English and Western knowledge in white New England families, schools and universities. As the vanguard of legions of Chinese students who have studied in the U.S. since, and as contemporaries of the far more numerous Chinese coolies whose paths they never crossed, this compelling study adds a surprising new chapter to early Asian American history." - Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Professor of History and Ethnic Studies; Director, Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Brown University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on unpublished stories, minutes, and reminiscences of Chignecto clergymen, Hay delineates Covenanter life, exploring its beliefs and traditions, leadership, relations with other Presbyterian bodies, and the causes of the movement's collapse. He focuses on two key figures in the movement, Reverend Alexander Clarke, an Irish missionary who established Reformed Presbyterian congregations in the area, and Reverend Joseph Howe Brownell, who consolidated the congregations and led them into the Presbyterian Church of Canada in 1905. The Chignecto Covenanters fills an important gap in the history of Canadian Presbyterianism and of the Maritime region. "A model of how micro-history can be portrayed within a macro-context, The Chignecto Covenanters fills a gap in Maritime regional history and makes a significant contribution to the broader fields of Canadian religious and cultural history." John Moir, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Toronto.

Book Statue in Search of a Pedestal A Biography of the Marquis De Lafayette

Download or read book Statue in Search of a Pedestal A Biography of the Marquis De Lafayette written by Noel B. Gerson and published by Heroes and Villains from Ameri. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An impressive biography of the Marquis de Lafayette - rebel, reformist, revolutionary. An ideal book for readers who wish to find out more about the remarkable life of the French nobleman who fought in the American Revolutionary War and was hailed a hero on both sides of the Atlantic. "Liberty for all is worth any sacrifice." So said Gilbert Motier de Lafayette, the French visionary who championed freedom and equality, but whose devotion to the cause of democratic government came at a great personal sacrifice. Born into one of the oldest and most honorable aristocratic families in France, as a teenager the idealistic Lafayette volunteered to fight under George Washington for America's independence in the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, a decisive victory which brought him lasting military renown and made him one of the true heroes of the American Revolution. A natural leader of men, both on and off the battlefield, as commander of France's National Guard Lafayette risked his own life to save those of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. Yet the role ultimately placed him in a position of conflict between the monarchy and the nobility, and, branded "a traitor to his class," he was forced to flee the country he loved and had served with unselfish distinction. Captured and imprisoned in the Austrian fortress of Olmütz for five years - his devoted wife Adrienne choosing to join him in captivity - Lafayette returned to France after Napoleon Bonaparte secured his release in 1797, though he refused to participate in Napoleon's dictatorial government. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1818 following two decades in political exile, Lafayette continued to fight for freedom of speech, press, assemblage, and worship, arguing that these were rights that belonged to all people and could not rightly be taken from them by any government. Drawing on contemporary material, including private letters and Lafayette's own memoirs, Noel B. Gerson paints a vivid picture of a man of physical and moral courage, whose fight for the cause of liberty earned him the title the "Hero of Two Worlds". Statue in Search of a Pedestal is an engrossing biography of the Marquis de Lafayette's lifelong quest to protect the principles of democracy, told through the lens of the three revolutions he participated in: the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Revolution of 1830.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marquis de Lafayette The Marquis de Lafayette may be a name that sounds vaguely familiar. If you've studied even a little American history, you'll recall Lafayette as George Washington's right-hand man during the American Revolution. This remarkable man was just a teenager when he ventured across the seas from France to fight in a conflict that he was in no way obligated to participate in. Yet, here he was, this young man full of idealistic thoughts, ready to help a country set their path on the road to independence. Little did Lafayette know that this would be just the first ride among many that he would take in his lifetime. Inside you will read about... - Early Life - Farewell to France - American Revolution - France and America Once Again - An American and a French Hero - French Revolution - Going From Bad to Worse And much more! For what Lafayette accomplished in America and what he brought home to France was unmistakably unique in his own time. For over seventy years this man would be the well-known and intimate friend of world leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. The Marquis de Lafayette can truly be called an American patriot; one who tried his best to bring America's best to the world's stage. Lafayette reached out to all; the poor, the middle classes, and the nobility. He believed in freedom for all people and for that we should be truly grateful.
