Book The Competitiveness of European Industry

Download or read book The Competitiveness of European Industry written by Arthur Francis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, The Competitiveness of European Industry helps in developing our understanding of the process of improving and measuring industrial competitiveness. The contributors focus on the competitiveness of European industry. Three main topics are discussed: the concept of competitiveness itself; what can be learned about competitiveness at the level of an individual national economy; and processes and strategies in forms which might contribute to improved competitive performance. The first two papers critically assess concepts and measures of national competitiveness and review the performances of the economies of Britain, France, and the Federal German Republic. Then follow accounts of industrial competitiveness in three smaller economies (Belgium, Switzerland, and Sweden), which develop a series of methods and techniques for the analysis of industrial structures and indicate significant policy implications. The three concluding papers look at the competitiveness of British industry at the firm level, focusing on the strategic changes, the competitive process, and technical innovation. This book will be of interest to policy makers, business school teachers, and researchers in the area of strategy, industrial economics, organization behaviour, and innovation management.

Book The Competitive Position of the European Food and Drink Industry

Download or read book The Competitive Position of the European Food and Drink Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study provides an assessment of the competitive position of the European food and drink industry, benchmarking the European industry against its main trading partners: the USA; Australia; Brazil; and Canada, for two periods: 2003-2007; and 2008-2012. The study finds that the EU food and drink industry achieved a more competitive position vis-à-vis the main trading partners on the international trade-related indicators. Meanwhile, the competitive performance measured by economic indicators weakened. The study identifies as the main European regulations with a positive impact on the sector's competitiveness: harmonisation of key legislation under the General Food Law; and food safety regulation. As main barriers to competitiveness, the inconsistent implementation of European regulations among EU Member States, leading to trade barriers for the Internal Market, was identified. Policy recommendations offered by the study include maintaining regulation supporting food quality and food safety, while addressing any remaining differences observed in the way Member States apply rules. For the industry, expansion of cooperation aimed for instance at the re-use of by-products and waste that might be transformed into fine-chemicals and natural macromolecules for the pharmaceutical or chemical industry should be explored.

Book Industry and the European Union

Download or read book Industry and the European Union written by Michael Darmer and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book is a most valuable contribution to the understanding of the complexity of European policies and their impact on individual businesses and industry as a whole. That focus makes this book unique. All in all, there are only a few books about the industrial policy of the European Union and none with such a focus.' - Karel van Miert, Universiteit Nyenrode, The Netherlands 'Contrary to standard works covering community industrial policy, this book is based on the experience of those involved in the actual formulation of policies. It documents the evolution of this policy towards a horizontal approach combining various instruments that need to be made consistent with each other. This book will be very valuable to scholars and policymakers alike.' - Alexis Jacquemin, European Commission and Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium European policies increasingly affect the daily decisions of European firms. Better understanding of the motivation and reasoning behind policies that affect industry is therefore essential to those interested in or affected by industrial policy. Industry and the European Union explores different European policy areas, focusing on aspects that are of particular importance for business.

Book Information Exchange Between Competitors in EU Competition Law

Download or read book Information Exchange Between Competitors in EU Competition Law written by Martin Gassler and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Exchange Between Competitors in EU Competition Law Martin Gassler Competing firms often exchange information in order to make more informed market decisions which can help to overcome market inefficiencies. However, an abundance of legal and economic research as well as case law has shown that information exchange may also enable firms to engage in collusion more readily and sustain it longer. This book is the first to concentrate on this challenging topic of EU competition law in such depth. It focuses on ‘pure’ information exchanges – exchanges that are not ancillary to a wider pro-competitive or anticompetitive conduct – and thoroughly explains the characteristics of such information exchanges, their pro-competitive and anticompetitive effects and discusses all the relevant legal aspects for their assessment. The author provides a robust analytical framework for assessing information exchanges under Article 101 TFEU, focusing on the risk of collusive outcomes and what types of information exchange are particularly harmful. With detailed attention to the leading cases on information exchange, the analysis examines the most important aspects for assessing information exchange between competitors, in particular: the concept of a concerted practice; the concepts of a restriction by object and effect, including their similarities and differences; the importance of evidentiary issues; the issue of signalling via advance public announcements; factors that facilitate collusion; efficiencies of information exchange, including market transparency; the legal challenges of tackling mere parallel conduct; facilitative practices in the Commission Guidelines, including the Horizontal Cooperation Guidelines; and safe harbours for certain types of information exchange. The book offers clear guidance on how to identify and thus distinguish information exchange that restricts competition by its object and information exchange that restricts competition (only) by its effects. It offers practical solutions to some of the perceived issues when assessing information exchanges. With its wealth of analysis not available from other sources, this concise yet comprehensive review of a much-debated topic in competition law offers clear guidance for practitioners in assessing the issues surrounding information exchange. The book will also be welcomed by competition law academics, competition lawyers and competition authority officials throughout Europe.
