Book excerpt: In early 1997, a man named Mel Waters called into a late-night syndicated radio show to make the claim that he had an "endless hole" on his property in the mountains of Eastern Washington that measured more than 80,000 feet deep. That phone call would lead to a wild turn of events that saw the government get involved, money change hands, and eventually something much more sinister occur. Did Mel discover the fate of our species? Or was it just a tall tale with a bizarre string of coincidences to back it up? Author Christopher Hayden digs into the mystery in this novel that covers the phone calls, details, misconceptions, and theories of Mel's Hole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Laffoley is a Visionary artist who lives and works in a tiny space in Boston he calls "the Boston Visionary Cell." A trained architect, Laffoley produces brilliantly colored mandala paintings filled with symbols and texts. Each painting is accompanied by a tex called a "thought-form," which serves as commentary on the painting's content. The paintings--many of them large (73 x 73 inches)--have titles that range from the paranormal and arcane ("The Ectoplasmic Man," "The Sexuality of Robots") to the erudite: "De Rerum Natura," referring to the poet Lucretius. Laffoley is interested in "the mechanics of mysticism," time and space, dreams, magic, and consciousness. In addition to painting, he has also designed a time machine and a prayer gun. This book collects what Laffoley and his gallerist, Douglas Walla, see as "the essential works"--94 color plates w/91 attendant thought-forms. It also includes an introduction by Walla, a biography of Laffoley by artist Steven Moskowitz, and essays by two scholars. Linda Dalrymple Henderson (University of Texas at Austin, Art History) is a renowned expert on Henri Bergson, Duchamp, the art/science juncture, and "the fourth dimension." Arielle Saiber (associate professor of Italian, Bowdoin College) analyzes one Laffoley's major works: Dante's 'Divine Comedy' Triptych.

Book The Fortean Influence on Science Fiction

Download or read book The Fortean Influence on Science Fiction written by Tanner F. Boyle and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Fort was an American researcher from the early twentieth century who cataloged reports of unexplained phenomena he found in newspapers and science journals. A minor bestseller with a cult appeal, Fort's work was posthumously republished in the pulp science fiction magazine Astounding Stories in 1934. His idiosyncratic books fascinated, scared, and entertained readers, many of them authors and editors of science fiction. Fort's work prophesied the paranormal mainstays of SF literature to come: UFOs, poltergeists, strange disappearances, cryptids, ancient mysteries, unexplained natural phenomena, and everything in between. Science fiction authors latched on to Fort's topics and hypotheses as perfect fodder for SF stories. Writers like Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, H.P. Lovecraft, and others are examined in this exploration of Fortean science fiction--a genre that borrows from the reports and ideas of Fort and others who saw the possible science-fictional nature of our reality.

One day, as Mole continues to search, he finds a pink radish poking through the top of his tunnel like a chandelier. Delighted with the knowledge that the world isn’t just black and white, he starts to talk to his chandelier about the world above. He learns that the world is full of colors! As Mole listens to his chandelier describe life aboveground, he imagines bright clothes, red roofs, vibrant green trees, pastel flowers, and the blush of the sun as it sinks through the sky. The next morning, Mole wakes to find his chandelier is gone, leaving a hole in its place. He is so upset at first that it takes him a moment to realize how bright his home has become. Searching for his chandelier, he crawls out of his black-and-white hole into the world above and discovers a place more colorful than he ever dreamed possible. Packed with vivid colors and striking illustrations, Mole in a Black-and-White Hole tells a charming tale about what awaits us when we seek out the light in the darkness.

Book excerpt: "[A] provocative page-turner." —People “In Parkhurst’s deft treatment, Harmony becomes a story of our time. . . Parkhurst cements herself as a writer capable of astonishing humanity and exquisite prose.” —Washington Post “Gorgeously written and patently original.” —Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of Leaving Time From the New York Times bestselling author of The Dogs of Babel, a taut, emotionally wrenching story of how a seemingly "normal" family could become desperate enough to leave everything behind and move to a "family camp" in New Hampshire--a life-changing experience that alters them forever. How far will a mother go to save her family? The Hammond family is living in DC, where everything seems to be going just fine, until it becomes clear that the oldest daughter, Tilly, is developing abnormally--a mix of off-the-charts genius and social incompetence. Once Tilly--whose condition is deemed undiagnosable--is kicked out of the last school in the area, her mother Alexandra is out of ideas. The family turns to Camp Harmony and the wisdom of child behavior guru Scott Bean for a solution. But what they discover in the woods of New Hampshire will push them to the very limit. Told from the alternating perspectives of both Alexandra and her younger daughter Iris (the book's Nick Carraway), this is a unputdownable story about the strength of love, the bonds of family, and how you survive the unthinkable.
