Speaking to the needs of the modern performer, it also includes entries on jazz and pop artists, digital pianos, and period instruments. As a resource for professionals and students, A Dictionary for the Modern Pianist is also accessible to more general readers, as all of its topics are presented in clear, readable expositions. Drawing on the most recent research of numerous specialists, author Stephen Siek emphasizes the piano's uniquely rich heritage, giving pianists a renewed appreciation for the famous artists and teachers who have shaped their art. Transcending simple alphabetical definitions, the dictionary’s careful attention both to legacy and detail make it an invaluable addition to any pianist’s library. Titles in the Dictionaries for the Modern Musician series offer novice and advanced musicians key information on the field of study and performance of a major instrument or instrument class. Unlike other encyclopedic works, contributions to this series focus primarily on the knowledge required by the contemporary musical student or performer. From quick definitions of confusing terms to in-depth overviews of history and tradition, the dictionaries are ideal references for students, professionals, and music lovers of all kinds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artistic Piano Playing, Vol. 1: As Taught by Ludwig Deppe "A knowledge of the thing to be achieved - a clear idea of what constitutes a beauty and what a blemish - cannot fail to be of service." - Herbert Spencer. "Piano-playing is mainly a matter of the mind, and not primarily of the muscles." - W. S. B.Mathews. Animated by recollections of Miss Amy Fay's "Music Study in Germany," I started for Berlin in the summer of 1899 with pleasant anticipations of possible music-study under the direction of Ludwig Deppe; therefore it was proportionately disconcerting to find, on arriving at that city, that it was too late, by some nine years, to avail myself of the coveted instruction. But the name continued to hold a fascination for me, and it was doubtless for this reason that, when glancing idly in a music-store window, my eye was caught by a little book bearing the title, "Die Deppe'sche Lehre des Klavierspiels." It proved to be tolerably stiff reading for a novice in German, but, nevertheless, I extracted therefrom quite enough to stimulate my already vivid interest in the subject, and to induce me to seek out the writer cf the book, upon whose shoulders it seemed the mantle of Deppe had fallen. Then followed eight months of earnest study, under the artistic control of Frl. Caland, wno, truly endowed with a double portion of her masters spirit, imparted to me the guiding principles of his system with a delightful enthusiasm which could not fail of its object. Therein I proved the truth of Goethes assertion that "the instruction which the true artist gives us opens the mind; for, where words fail him, deeds speak." And it is in grateful recognition of the inspiration and uplift which came to me through the teachings of those months that I now present the accompanying translation to English readers. If it be true that "genius is a kind of god-like insanity," then Deppe was no genius. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cambridge History of Musical Performance

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Musical Performance written by Colin Lawson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 1066 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intricacies and challenges of musical performance have recently attracted the attention of writers and scholars to a greater extent than ever before. Research into the performer's experience has begun to explore such areas as practice techniques, performance anxiety and memorisation, as well as many other professional issues. Historical performance practice has been the subject of lively debate way beyond academic circles, mirroring its high profile in the recording studio and the concert hall. Reflecting the strong ongoing interest in the role of performers and performance, this History brings together research from leading scholars and historians and, importantly, features contributions from accomplished performers, whose practical experiences give the volume a unique vitality. Moving the focus away from the composers and onto the musicians responsible for bringing the music to life, this History presents a fresh, integrated and innovative perspective on performance history and practice, from the earliest times to today.
