Book Allegory and Ideology

Download or read book Allegory and Ideology written by Fredric Jameson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fredric Jameson takes on the allegorical form Works do not have meanings, they soak up meanings: a work is a machine for libidinal investments (including the political kind). It is a process that sorts incommensurabilities and registers contradictions (which is not the same as solving them!) The inevitable and welcome conflict of interpretations - a discursive, ideological struggle - therefore needs to be supplemented by an account of this simultaneous processing of multiple meanings, rather than an abandonment to liberal pluralisms and tolerant (or intolerant) relativisms. This is not a book about "method", but it does propose a dialectic capable of holding together in one breath the heterogeneities that reflect our biological individualities, our submersion in collective history and class struggle, and our alienation to a disembodied new world of information and abstraction. Eschewing the arid secularities of philosophy, Walter Benjamin once recommended the alternative of the rich figurality of an older theology; in that spirit we here return to the antiquated Ptolemaic systems of ancient allegory and its multiple levels (a proposal first sketched out in The Political Unconscious); it is tested against the epic complexities of the overtly allegorical works of Dante, Spenser and the Goethe of Faust II, as well as symphonic form in music, and the structure of the novel, postmodern as well as Third-World: about which a notorious essay on National Allegory is here reprinted with a theoretical commentary; and an allegorical history of emotion is meanwhile rehearsed from its contemporary, geopolitical context.

Book Milton s Theory of Poetry and Fine Art

Download or read book Milton s Theory of Poetry and Fine Art written by Ida Langdon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Theory of Poetry and Fine Art: An Essay, With a Collection of Illustrative Passages From His Works Briefly stated, my purpose in this volume has been to assemble Milton's references to poetry and the other fine arts, and as far as possible to formulate his poetics.' The study was first undertaken for a doctoral dissertation at Cornell University, and, as originally carried out under the supervision of Professor Lane Cooper, was submitted to that end, and accepted in June, 1912. During the last few years, as opportunity permitted, I have revised and eu larged it, while constantly indebted to Professor Cooper for generous and valuable assistance. Whatever merit the book may possess is in great part the result of his interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Aesthetics, fledgling of the philosophic brood, is the most suspect of that family. It is suspected of all the philosophical sins: vagueness, disorder, dogmatism, emotionalism, reductionism, compartmentalization. Sometimes its youth is thought to be a sufficient excuse for these divagations. Sometimes the very nature of its content, involving the waywardness of genius, the remoteness of feeling from intellect, the surd of inspiration in even the mildest appreciation, are believed to condemn aes thetics irrevocably to the underside of the civilized man's domain. Some philosophers have gloried in this apparently mystical and a-rational quality and have seen in it the very nature of the beautiful; others have come to regard it, rather, as evidence of the unskillfulness of our minds and have turned away from aesthetic problems to the task of sharpening the aesthetician's language and logic. The laughter of the gods is not difficult to discern through the poetry of the more mystical aesthetician or through the prose of the analysts. Meanwhile the manifold complexities and problems of aesthetic experience invite our understanding. For aesthetic experience is a present fact of human life and may, perhaps, be understood by men. Such, at least, will be the present assumption. This is the reason why the title of this book mentions art together with analysis; for if art is intelligible, the work of art and the experience of it may be analyzed into its functional parts.

Book Poetry as a Representative Art

Download or read book Poetry as a Representative Art written by George Lansing Raymond and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry as a Representative Art: An Essay in Comparative Aesthetics This work is intended to be complete in itself, developing from beginning to end the whole subject of which it treats. But this subject is a part of a larger one, connected with which are many underlying principles and practical inferences not mentioned here, although some of them, apparently, are not outside even of the limited range of discussion prescribed for this book by its title. To obviate the criticism which the omission of any reference to these may naturally occasion, it seems well to state that Poetry as a Representative Art is only one of a series of essays, most of which have been thought out, many written, and the whole, when completed, intended to present topics arranged somewhat as follows: The Distinction between Nature and Art - Between Useful and AEsthetic Art - The different Theories held concerning the Latter, and their effects upon its Products - The true Theory, its Philosophical Basis, and the Classification of the Arts as determined by it. The fact of Representation, and its Bearings upon the Methods of the different Arts - Poetry as a representative Art (the present work) - Representation in Music - Painting - Sculpture - and architecture.
