Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did writers in the Reformed tradition mean by suggesting that the Covenant of Works with Adam has been republished in the Mosaic Covenant? Not all forms of this doctrine of "republication" are the same. Merit and Moses is a critical evaluation of a particular version of the republication doctrine--one formulated by Meredith G. Kline and espoused in The Law Is Not of Faith (2009). At the heart of this discussion is the attribute of God's justice and the Reformed view of merit. Has classic Augustinian theology been turned on its head? Does--or can--God make a covenant at Sinai with fallen people by which Israel may merit temporal blessings on the basis of works? Have "merit" and "justice" been redefined in the service of Kline's works-merit paradigm? The authors of Merit and Moses examine the positions of John Murray and Norman Shepherd with respect to the reactionary development of the Klinean republication doctrine. Klinean teachings are shown to swing wide of the Reformed tradition when held up to the plumb line of the Westminster Standards, which embody the Reformed consensus on covenant theology and provide a faithful summary of Scripture.

Book Lord What Would You Have Me to Do in My Life

Download or read book Lord What Would You Have Me to Do in My Life written by David A. Zaukelies and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written primarily for the use of Christian teachers, preachers, and lay bible scholars. It attempts to bring to one's attention, most of all, to scriptures containing the word "love" in the New Testament. The book presents the practical way of living for God's people. It describes what God wants of his people. It gives the reasons why. It is all based on Biblical statements. The author has endeavored to combine Bible verses relating to the same or similar subjects. The subjects are addressed in a logical way, trying not to overlook anything pertaining to the main subject. Bible verses are all taken from the K.J.V. (King James Version) except for a word or two from other versions that are seemingly somewhat different in meaning. This was done because any serious scholar of the Bible, using the English language, would be knowledgeable of the K.J.V.. This is not to say that the K.J.V. is an any more accurate version than other. Since Godly love is the primary subject of this writing, it must include a study of the Commandments of God; since, God's commandments are all about God-like love. As the study proceeds, other elements enter these principles. Things like salvation, grace, works, God's will, the meaning of Godly love, the blessings given, the law, the various laws, the New Covenant, obedience, righteousness, holiness, graceful believers, faith and one's behavior. These other principles are discussed in detail, with Bible verses given in the text. The author has included the actual Bible verses, not just references, in the text for the convenience of the reader. The whole writing is about what kind of life God wants (according to his Word) his people to have. That life is a practical way for a child of God to live for him. The special assignments that God might give to some individuals are not discussed, except that those individuals are also expected to obey the standing requirements that God has for everyone. The first three chapters of the book present Bible quotations that seem to contradict one another. They present Christ giving salvation, then the dire result of not obeying the commandments, and then the solution of the seeming contradictions. Chapter four explains what God expects of believers, the saved ones. Jesus said, one that loves him must obey his commandments. The meaning of commandment is discussed and a review of the commandments is given in chapter five. More information about commandments is in chapter six. Chapter seven begins to explain what God wants believers to do with their lives. The preceding chapters need to be read before chapter seven in order to properly understand it. The concept of grace in relationship to the previous chapters is discussed in chapter eight. Chapter nine goes back to the commandments, especially the ones that Jesus called "great". The next chapter concentrates on the meaning of "love", often mentioned in the Bible. Love and charity (both are from the same Greek word) are rendered in this work by the terms "Godly love" and "God-like love". This was done to make certain that any other use from the word is not what the Bible means by the term "love". Chapters ten to fourteen all explain and discus more about what Godly love in the N.T. means. Chapter fifteen presents the new commandment that Jesus gave believers. This commandment is an embellishment of the second great commandment; and, it emphasizes an aspect of that great commandment. Chapters sixteen and seventeen cover the writings of the apostle John with regard to Godly love. Chapter eighteen instructs us about God loving we humans. It discusses the unfathomable love that God has for us. It explains that God wants people to love people like He loves people. We get an understanding of how we are supposed to love God in chapter nineteen. Chapter twenty discusses how that believers are supposed to love other people. Jesus made many statements about God-like love without using the

Book excerpt: A Comprehensive Exploration of the Biblical Covenants This book forms an overview of the biblical teaching on covenant as well as the practical significance of covenant for the Christian life. A host of 26 scholars shows how covenant is not only clearly taught from Scripture, but also that it lays the foundation for other key doctrines of salvation. The contributors, who engage variously in biblical, systematic, and historical theology, present covenant theology not as a theological abstract imposed on the Bible but as a doctrine that is organically presented throughout the biblical narrative. As students, pastors, and church leaders come to see the centrality of covenant to the Christian faith, the more the church will be strengthened with faith in the covenant-keeping God and encouraged in their understanding of the joy of covenant life.
