Book excerpt: Excerpt from Among French Folk: A Book for Vagabonds Spring is surely the most abused of seasons, for to it are attributed, directly or indirectly, countless lapses from commonsense. I am instructed by Helen - a wife whose advice is often worth following - to blame the season for the notes which follow. Personally I would blame the employers who, just at that time, took it into their heads to dispense with my services. Had it not been for them I should have spent the summer respectably employed in filling the columns of a daily newspaper. But no. Helen remains adamant on the Spring theory. She is romantic. Her only sorrow, I believe, is that she is not her namesake of Troy, whose beauty inspired poets and embroiled nations. That would have been so exciting. She found it exciting even to be out of a job. She looked up with dancing eyes. "We'll wander through France," she enthused. "Just a pack on our backs and a Springtime smile for everyone we see." I have yet to meet the person who will stand out against Helen. She listens to no reasoning: did not on this occasion. It was the Spring, she repeated, the season of the Bohemian, the Wanderlust. The Fates favoured her plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Folklore Figures of French and Creole Louisiana

Download or read book Folklore Figures of French and Creole Louisiana written by Nathan Rabalais and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Folklore Figures of French and Creole Louisiana, Nathan J. Rabalais examines the impact of Louisiana’s remarkably diverse cultural and ethnic groups on folklore characters and motifs during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Establishing connections between Louisiana and France, West Africa, Canada, and the Antilles, Rabalais explores how folk characters, motifs, and morals adapted to their new contexts in Louisiana. By viewing the state’s folklore in the light of its immigration history, he demonstrates how folktales can serve as indicators of sociocultural adaptation as well as contact among cultural communities. In particular, he examines the ways in which collective traumas experienced by Louisiana’s major ethnic groups—slavery, the grand dérangement, linguistic discrimination—resulted in fundamental changes in these folktales in relation to their European and African counterparts. Rabalais points to the development of an altered moral economy in Cajun and Creole folktales. Conventional heroic qualities, such as physical strength, are subverted in Louisiana folklore in favor of wit and cunning. Analyses of Black Creole animal tales like those of Bouki et Lapin and Tortie demonstrate the trickster hero’s ability to overcome both literal and symbolic entrapment through cleverness. Some elements of Louisiana’s folklore tradition, such as the rougarou and cauchemar, remain an integral presence in the state’s cultural landscape, apparent in humor, popular culture, regional branding, and children’s books. Through its adaptive use of folklore, French and Creole Louisiana will continue to retell old stories in innovative ways as well as create new stories for future generations.

Book It s Good to Tell You

Download or read book It s Good to Tell You written by Rosemary Hyde Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories told in this book, like the stories on television, illustrate the triumph of good over evil; the rewards of heroism and virtue; and the endurance of the human spirit when faced with tragedy and catastrophe. In addition, these fairy tales offer the thrills of exotic settings and of exciting adventures. They are spiced with humor, both focused and broad. Like other traditional stories, they provide an interesting mirror of cultural values that indicate western European influence. There is evidence that these tales and their direct ancestors have evolved from the ancient Sanskrit and Persian cultures to the European Middle Ages, from the Age of Enlightenment to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wherever oral cultures had flourished. We held our first interviews in the summer of 1977, after we decided that we would offer that September a free class for anyone who wanted to learn or to relearn the Old Mines French dialect. The purpose of the interviews was to enable us to find material for these lessons. We sought out people who spoke French in the Old Mines area and conversed with them in French, as well as was possible.
