Book A Supplement to the Glossary of the Dialect of Cumberland Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Supplement to the Glossary of the Dialect of Cumberland Classic Reprint written by E. W. Prevost and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Supplement to the Glossary of the Dialect of Cumberland Several words which were peculiar only on account of the dialectic pronunciation had been erroneously placed in the list pp. Xxxiv-lxxxii; these are now transferred to the glossarial part of the present volume, together with a few others from the same list which possess a special interest apart from the pronunciation; e. G. Toes, s. V. Tesa. As this Supplement 1s intended to be used in con; unction with, and not wholly independent of, the previous volume, and to avoid unnecessary repetition, a number often follows the Headword. In such a case reference must be made to the page in the earlier Glossary whereon will be found the same Headword then the connexion of the old material with new, whether consisting of variants, new localities, or illustrations not previously obtainable, will be made clear; otherwise the additions will at first sight ap pear to be irrelevant. The corrections and additions to the Preface are also paged (roman numerals), in order that the reader may the more easily make comparison if he should so desire. For more than one reason it was thought that a list of Similes current in the county would be of interest; it will be seen that whilst many are truly dialectal, others are but translations into the vernacular of those in general use. The Proverbial Sayings are quaint, and indicative of the character of the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Words and Phrases Pertaining to the Dialect of Cumberland The present work is a second edition, revised and extended, of 1 Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland, published in White haven, in 1859, which has for some time been out of print. The changes in this new edition are numerous, both in the way of omission and addition. As regards the omissions, many words previously included Were merely corruptions or peculiar pronunciations of ordinary current English. These it has not been deemed necessary to retain. The rule of exclusion, however, has not been absolutely or rigorously observed, because some Cumbrian forms of common English cannot without ex planation be made intelligible to people living beyond the borders of the county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland The English language has no equivalent to the vowel sound in the way the word brust (burst) is pronounced. It is not the u, the 3, nor the i, but a kind of compromise between the e and the i. The word run is in a similar predicament, it being frequently pronounced in a half-way sound between win and ran, and partly approaching to ren, but not strictly coinciding with the sound of any of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Words and Phrases Pertaining to the Dialect of Cumberland In addition to such general differences as these, there are also many purely local variations in fact, it might be asserted that every group of two or three parishes contains its own peculiarities. With these, however, it is impossible to deal in the limits of this sketch, and attention will be centred on the broad differences of the three principal divisions. The Central division is the standard, its physical configuration and remoteness from corroding influences pointing to the retention of a dialectal purity, it would be vain to ask of those districts which bear traces of their close contact with neighbouring folk-tongues. Book The Dialect of Cumberland

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dialect of Cumberland: With a Chapter on Its Place-Names The importance of our local dialects as a collateral aid in the study of the English tongue needs not now to be asserted. Without reference to those various forms of speech, out of which one has by dint of circumstances become crystalized in the standard tongue, the language can no more be clearly illustrated than it could be were we to omit to compare it with the cognate languages of Europe. The folk-speech of Cumberland has - thanks to the patriotic interest which her sons take in all that belongs to her - had a more ample share of recognition than generally falls to the lot of provincial dialects. Its humour and its pathos, its "canniness" - quaintness with a touch of cynicism - have been ably illustrated in prose, and its rhythmical qualities attested in verse, by the writers whose names appear on the subjoined list.
