Book excerpt: This was a study to determine whether classical music played in the preoperative holding area decreased the anxiety of surgical patients. A group of patients who are exposed to music in a preoperative holding area will demonstrate a significantly lower degree of anxiety when compared to a group of patients who are not exposed to music in a preoperative holding area. The study was conducted in one area hospital using the preoperative holding area in a general service surgical suite. Two groups of 20 patients each were given two questionnaires using a pre-test-post-test method. The instruments used were the Anxiety Status Inventory and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale. The hypothesis that patients who are exposed to classical music in a preoperative holding area will experience less anxiety than patients who are not exposed to music in a preoperative holding area was not supported by this study were not statistically significant.

Forty colonoscopy patients wererandomized into either listening to music (Experimental group, n=20) or not listening tomusic(Control group, n=20). After all patients were informed about procedure by researcher,the anxiety level of patientsu2019 was measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventoryu2019s twoscales (STAI-State and STAI-Trait) and the pain was measured Visual Analog Scale (VAS).Patients in the experimental group were listened the Turkish Art Music with headphones for15 minutes during colonoscopy. The control group did not listen to the music duringprocedure. After the procedure, all patients rated pain and only STAI-State related to theprocedure.Results: According the sociodemographic characteristics of patients, 55% of the patients inthe experimental group were female and 50% of the control group were male. It wasdetermined that 59.1% of the patients in the experimental group and 72.2% of the patients inthe control group had no cancer storms. In addition to this 55% of the experimental group and61.1% of the control group patients had colonoscopy before. The patients in the control groupThe mean age 55.77u00b116.22 (min=24, max=78) in control group and 55.95u00b111.40 (min=31max= 79) in the experimental group. After the procedure the mean STAI-state score was37.55u00b14.24 (min=32 max=48) in the experimental group and 38,25u00b17.25 (min=29 max=60) inthe control group (p=0.476). Mean pain score was 1.8u00b10.53(min=0 max=8) in the controlgroup and 1.56u00b10.53 (min=0 max=10) in the experimental group (p=0.925).Conclusion: According to results no significant effects of music on anxiety and pain duringcolonoscopy.

Book excerpt: The concept of the “Soundscapes” includes all of the sounds in one’s environment and focuses not only on the sounds itself. Instead, it focuses on the interrelationships between person and activity and place, both in space and time. Soundscape also include influences on the acoustic environment through auditory sensation, its interpretation, and the responses to the acoustic environment in context. The conceptual framework of Soundscape describes the “process of perceiving or experiencing and/or understanding an acoustic environment, highlighting general concepts and their relationships: context, sound sources, acoustic environment, auditory sensation, interpretation of auditory sensation, responses, and outcomes” (International Organization for Standardization, ISO 12913-1:2014 Acoustics Soundscape Part Definition and Conceptual Framework, ISO, Geneva, 2014). With soundscape, one achieves a deeper understanding of acoustic environment and its effects on people. The ISO standard 12931-1 on soundscape provides an important, and rigorous, distinction in the use of “Soundscape.” But, it is recognizable that some individuals, particularly planners, designers, lay persons, and even those primarily interested in management of the acoustic environment through environmental noise control, will find it convenient to use “Soundscape” as a synonym for the physical acoustic environment. When it comes to noise management and urban planning, soundscape research has the potential to promote healthy urban environments by sharing and incorporating the significant knowledge of all concerned parties. Understandably, this shows that the communication with regard to noise management has to be forced to guarantee that the specifics of Soundscapes (i.e., the relevance of perception) are seriously considered alongside the whole. This book will bridge the gap between soundscape theory and practice and therefore it will be different from our earlier publications as “Soundscape and the built environment” (ed. by J. Kang and B. Schulte-Fortkamp CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, Boca Raton, Fl 2016) and also from the respective Special Issues on Soundscapes in 2012 in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (ed. by B. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.
