Download or read book Accommodating High Churchmen written by Jeffrey Scott Chamberlain and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to High Churchmen in eighteenth-century England? Contending that high-church clergymen did not simply acquiesce to government after the Hanoverian accession, as has often been claimed, Jeffrey Chamberlain explores the complex accommodation that was forged between the secular powers and the clergy. Focusing on the county of Sussex, he finds that there was accommodation by both clergy and the Whig politicians: the former had to make peace with a new administration, but that administration's efforts to prove themselves "good churchmen" enabled the religious to come to terms with them without jettisoning their principles.

Book The Restraint of the Press in England 1660 1715

Download or read book The Restraint of the Press in England 1660 1715 written by Alex W. Barber and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of the fascinating interplay between communication, politics and religion in early modern England suggesting a new framework for the politics of print culture. This book challenges the idea that the loss of pre-publication licensing in 1695 unleashed a free press on an unsuspecting political class, setting England on the path to modernity. England did not move from a position of complete control of the press to one of complete freedom. Instead, it moved from pre-publication censorship to post-publication restraint. Political and religious authorities and their agents continued to shape and manipulate information. Authors, printers, publishers and book agents were continually harassed. The book trade reacted by practicing self-censorship. At times of political calm, government and the book trade colluded in a policy of policing rather than punishment. The Restraint of the Press in England problematizes the notion of the birth of modernity, a moment claimed by many prominent scholars to have taken place at the transition from the seventeenth into the eighteenth century. What emerges from this study is not a steady move to liberalism, democracy or modernity. Rather, after 1695, England was a religious and politically fractured society, in which ideas of the sovereignty of the people and the power of public opinion were being established and argued about.

Book Jane Austen Abolitionist

Download or read book Jane Austen Abolitionist written by Margie Burns and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the phrase "pride and prejudice" before it became the title of Jane Austen's most famous novel is largely forgotten today. In particular, most of the reading public is unaware that "pride and prejudice" was a traditional critique adopted by British and American antislavery writers. After Austen's lifetime, the antislavery associations intensified, especially in America. This is the only book about the tradition and the many newly discovered uses of "pride and prejudice" before and after Austen's popular novel. Hundreds of examples in an annotated list show the phrase used to uphold independence--independent judgment, independent ethical behavior, independence that repudiated all forms of oppression. The book demonstrates how, in a natural evolution, the phrase was used to criticize enslavement and the slave trade. Eighteenth-century revolutionary Thomas Paine used it in Common Sense, and nineteenth-century abolitionist Frederick Douglass used it throughout his lifetime. Choosing her title for these resonances, Austen supported independent reason, reinforced writing by women, and opposed enslavement.
