The author of more than twenty books, Cunningham [1718?-1789] was one of the most prolific legal writers of the eighteenth century. Like Jacob, Cunningham aimed to create a dictionary that would give a complete account of the law. The result is a work that is also an abridgment, and includes summaries of cases and precedents in equity and statutes. Along with those of Jacob and Marriot, it was one of the most popular comprehensive English dictionaries of the period, and was found in Thomas Jefferson's library. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century English game laws have long been synonymous with petty tyranny. By imposing a property qualification on sportsmen, they effectively denied all but country gentlemen the right to take game or even to possess a gun. Those who challenged the gentry's monopoly were fined or imprisoned, usually after only a summary hearing by the local justice of the peace. In the early nineteenth century, it was claimed that one out of every four inmates in England's prisons was an offender against the game laws. Bitterly denounced at the time, they have continued to be condemned by historians as arbitrary, savage and unjust. This book is the first full scholarly examination of the English game laws. Based on material drawn from over two dozen archives - including judicial records, estate correspondence and personal diaries - it attempts to explain what the laws actually were, why they were passed, how they were enforced and why they were eventually repealed. The picture which emerges from this investigation challenges the conventional wisdom about the game laws in a number of important respects.

Book Sociability and Power in Late Stuart England

Download or read book Sociability and Power in Late Stuart England written by Susan E. Whyman and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original study looks at rituals of sociability in new and creative ways. Based upon thousands of personal letters, it reconstructs the changing country and London worlds of an English gentry family and reveals intimate details about the social and cultural life of the period. Challenging current views, the book observes strong connections, instead of deep divisions, between country and city, land and trade, sociability and power. Its very different view undermines established stereotypes of omnipotent male patriarchs, powerless wives and kin, autonomous elder sons, and dependent younger brothers. Gifts of venison and visits in a coach reveal unexpected findings about the subtle power of women over the social code, the importance of younger sons, and the overwhelming impact of London. Successfully combining storytelling and historical analysis, the book recreates everyday lives in a period of overseas expansion, financial revolution, and political turmoil.
