Book In Search of Information Use of Google Trends Data to Narrow Information Gaps for Low income Developing Countries

Download or read book In Search of Information Use of Google Trends Data to Narrow Information Gaps for Low income Developing Countries written by Mr.Futoshi Narita and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely data availability is a long-standing challenge in policy-making and analysis for low-income developing countries. This paper explores the use of Google Trends’ data to narrow such information gaps and finds that online search frequencies about a country significantly correlate with macroeconomic variables (e.g., real GDP, inflation, capital flows), conditional on other covariates. The correlation with real GDP is stronger than that of nighttime lights, whereas the opposite is found for emerging market economies. The search frequencies also improve out-of-sample forecasting performance albeit slightly, demonstrating their potential to facilitate timely assessments of economic conditions in low-income developing countries.

Book A Quality of Growth Index for Developing Countries

Download or read book A Quality of Growth Index for Developing Countries written by Mr.Montfort Mlachila and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper proposes a new quality of growth index (QGI) for developing countries. The index encompasses both the intrinsic nature and social dimensions of growth, and is computed for over 90 countries for the period 1990-2011. The approach is premised on the fact that not all growth is created equal in terms of social outcomes, and that it does matter how one reaches from one level of income to another for various theoretical and empirical reasons. The paper finds that the quality of growth has been improving in the vast majority of developing countries over the past two decades, although the rate of convergence is relatively slow. At the same time, there are considerable cross-country variations across income levels and regions. Finally, emprirical investigations point to the fact that main factors of the quality of growth are political stability, public pro-poor spending, macroeconomic stability, financial development, institutional quality and external factors such as FDI.

Book Tracking Short Term Dynamics of Economic Activity in Low Income Countries in the Absence of High Frequency Gdp Data

Download or read book Tracking Short Term Dynamics of Economic Activity in Low Income Countries in the Absence of High Frequency Gdp Data written by Mr.S. V. S. Dixit and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses a set of routinely collected high-frequency data in low-income countries (LICs) to construct an aggregate and a comprehensive index of economic activity which could serve (i) as a measure of the direction of economic activity; and (ii) as a useful input in analyzing contemporaneous real sector performance in LICs in the absence of high-frequency, and often outdated, GDP data. It could also serve as a useful tool for policymakers to gauge short-term dynamics of economic activity and shape appropriate and timely policy responses.

Book System of National Accounts 1993

Download or read book System of National Accounts 1993 written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1993-03-15 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1993 SNA represents a major advance in national accounting. While updating and clarifying the 1968 SNA, the 1993 SNA provides the basis for improving compilation of national accounts statistics, promoting integration of economic and related statistics, and enhancing analysis of economic developments. The 1993 SNA deals more clearly with relationships between economic flows (such as production, income, savings, accumulation, and financing) and links between these flows and stocks. At the same time the 1993 SNA reflects the many significant developments that have taken place in financial markets and completes the integration of balance sheets into the system. The 1993 SNA also suggests how satellite accounts (e.g. environmental accounts) and alternative classifications (e.g., through social accounting matrices) an be used to augment the central framework of the system.

Book IMF Supported Programs in Low Income Countries

Download or read book IMF Supported Programs in Low Income Countries written by Mr.Christian Mumssen and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the short and longer-term impact of IMF engagement in Low-Income Countries (LICs) over nearly three decades. In contrast to earlier studies, we focus on a sample composed exclusively of LICs and disentangle the different effects of IMF longer-term engagement and short-term financing using a propensity score matching approach to control for selection bias. Our results indicate that longer-term IMF support (at least five years of program engagement per decade) helped LICs sustain economic growth and boost resilience by building fiscal buffers. Interestingly, the size of IMF financing has no significant impact on economic growth, possibly pointing to the prominent role of IMF policy advice and institutional capacity building in the context of longer-term engagement. We also present evidence that the short-term IMF engagement through augmentations of existing programs or short-term and emergency facilities is positively associated with a wide range of macroeconomic outcomes. Notably, the IMF financial support has the greatest impact on short-term growth when LICs are faced with substantial macroeconomic imbalances or exogenous shocks.

Book Vyavahar Vigyanon Main Anusandhan Ke Prayogatmak Aakalp

Download or read book Vyavahar Vigyanon Main Anusandhan Ke Prayogatmak Aakalp written by World Bank and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 5th edition of World development Indicators in its current format. It captures the most important issues for developing countries: health, education, welfare, sustainable use of natural resources and the reversal of environmental loss, economic growth and the management of the economy and integration with the world economy. It shows that although there has been progress in reducing extreme poverty none of the international development goals on health and education is likely to be met. The current level of aid , at some 0.24% of gross national income is far short of the target of 0.7% many countries promised.

Book The Economic Performance Index EPI

Download or read book The Economic Performance Index EPI written by Mr.Vadim Khramov and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing economic indicators and indexes assess economic activity but no single indicator measures the general macro-economic performance of a nation, state, or region in a methodologically simple and intuitive way. This paper proposes a simple, yet informative metric called the Economic Performance Index (EPI). The EPI represents a step toward clarity, by combining data on inflation, unemployment, government deficit, and GDP growth into a single indicator. In contrast to other indexes, the EPI does not use complicated mathematical procedures but was designed for simplicity, making it easier for professionals and laypeople alike to understand and apply to the economy. To maximize ease of understanding, we adopt a descriptive grading system. In addition to a Raw EPI that gives equal weights to its components, we construct a Weighted EPI and show that both indexes perform similarly for U.S. data. To demonstrate the validity of the EPI, we conduct a review of U.S. history from 1790 to 2012. We show that the EPI reflects the major events in U.S. history, including wars, periods of economic prosperity and booms, along with economic depressions, recessions, and even panics. Furthermore, the EPI not only captures official recessions over the past century but also allows for measuring and comparing their relative severity. Even though the EPI is simple by its construction, we show that its dynamics are similar to those of the Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) and The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI).
