Book The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies

This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refugee and Forced Migration Studies has grown from being a concern of a relatively small number of scholars and policy researchers in the 1980s to a global field of interest with thousands of students worldwide studying displacement either from traditional disciplinary perspectives or as a core component of newer programmes across the Humanities and Social and Political Sciences. Today the field encompasses both rigorous academic research which may or may not ultimately inform policy and practice, as well as action-research focused on advocating in favour of refugees' needs and rights. This authoritative Handbook critically evaluates the birth and development of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, and analyses the key contemporary and future challenges faced by academics and practitioners working with and for forcibly displaced populations around the world. The 52 state-of-the-art chapters, written by leading academics, practitioners, and policymakers working in universities, research centres, think tanks, NGOs and international organizations, provide a comprehensive and cutting-edge overview of the key intellectual, political, social and institutional challenges arising from mass displacement in the world today. The chapters vividly illustrate the vibrant and engaging debates that characterize this rapidly expanding field of research and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive look at Hmong religion in the United States, where resettled refugees found creative ways to maintain their traditions, even as Christian organizations deputized by the government were granted an outsized influence on the refugees’ new lives. Every year, members of the Hmong Christian Church of God in Minneapolis gather for a cherished Thanksgiving celebration. But this Thanksgiving takes place in the spring, in remembrance of the turbulent days in May 1975 when thousands of Laotians were evacuated for resettlement in the United States. For many Hmong, passage to America was also a spiritual crossing. As they found novel approaches to living, they also embraced Christianity—called kev cai tshiab, “the new way”—as a means of navigating their complex spiritual landscapes. Melissa May Borja explores how this religious change happened and what it has meant for Hmong culture. American resettlement policies unintentionally deprived Hmong of the resources necessary for their time-honored rituals, in part because these practices, blending animism, ancestor worship, and shamanism, challenged many Christian-centric definitions of religion. At the same time, because the government delegated much of the resettlement work to Christian organizations, refugees developed close and dependent relationships with Christian groups. Ultimately the Hmong embraced Christianity on their own terms, adjusting to American spiritual life while finding opportunities to preserve their customs. Follow the New Way illustrates America’s wavering commitments to pluralism and secularism, offering a much-needed investigation into the public work done by religious institutions with the blessing of the state. But in the creation of a Christian-inflected Hmong American animism we see the resilience of tradition—how it deepens under transformative conditions.

Book Research Handbook on the Law and Politics of Migration

Download or read book Research Handbook on the Law and Politics of Migration written by Catherine Dauvergne and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the law and politics of migration become increasingly intertwined, this thought-provoking Research Handbook addresses the challenge of analysing their growing relationship. Discussing the evolving theoretical approaches to migration, it explores the growing attention given to the legal frameworks for migration and the expansion of regulation, as migration moves to the centre of the political global agenda. The Research Handbook demonstrates that the overlap between law and politics puts the rule of law at risk in matters of migration.

Book Refugee Sponsorship Guide Book for Sponsorship Groups Or Prospective Sponsorship Groups of Refugees Entering Into Canada to Become Landed Immigrants

Download or read book Refugee Sponsorship Guide Book for Sponsorship Groups Or Prospective Sponsorship Groups of Refugees Entering Into Canada to Become Landed Immigrants written by Working Group on Refugee Resettlement and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook is designed to help those who are considering sponsoring a refugee or a refugee family entering into Canada to become landed immigrants. It is also designed to help prepare those groups who have already made such a commitment, and assist them in their plans and organization of the sponsorship activity. Compiled by the Working Group on Refugee Resettlement, and supported by the United Church of Canada and The Toronto Diocese of the Anglican Church of Canada, the guidebook begins with an overview of how refugees come to Canada, and considers three types of sponsorship - full, partnership, joint sponsorship. It then deals briefly with financial guarantees, costs, making the decision, and filing the sponsorship. The major chapters of the book treat planning and preparation; arrival, initial settlement and orientation; and long-term adjustments. The planning and preparation chapter highlights a number of practical steps to be taken, including forming a committee organization and committee responsibilities - finance, housing, health, etc. The arrival, initial settlement and orientation chapter includes helpful suggestions from arrival at the airoport, to mail, to religious practices. In the final section several areas of ongoing attention are noted, such as language, employment, relatives, and reaching the end to the sponsorship period. A number of appendices include information focusing on resources available in Canada, especially in and around Toronto.

Book excerpt: They are coming. Who? Refugees. Every year, the President and Congress determine the arrival quota, the small percentage of refugees who will have a chance to start a new life in the United States during that year. But just because theyre coming does not mean they are somehow lucky or that they are even going to make it in our land of opportunity. To have the best shot at success, they need your help. 10 MILLION TO 1 is about the help, direction, and love you can provide to refugees as they arrive in our country and take their first steps toward self-sufficiency. Download or read book Crossing Law s Border written by Shauna Labman and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN Refugee Agency considers resettlement – the selection and transfer of refugees from the state where they seek asylum to another state that volunteers to take them – a tool of refugee protection and an expression of international burden sharing. In this account of Canada’s resettlement program from the Indochinese crisis of the 1970s to the Syrian crisis of the 2010s, Shauna Labman explores how rights, responsibilities, and obligations intersect in the absence of a legal scheme for refugee resettlement. In particular, she examines the role of the law on the voluntary act of resettlement and the effect of resettlement on asylum policies. This pathbreaking book looks at the interplay between resettlement and asylum in one of the world’s most successful refugee protection programs and shows how resettlement can either complement or complicate in-country asylum claims at a time when refugee crises and fear of outsiders are causing countries to close their borders to asylum-seekers around the world.
