Book English Exposed

Download or read book English Exposed written by Steve Hart and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having analysed the most common English errors made in over 600 academic papers written by Chinese undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers, Steve Hart has written an essential, practical guide specifically for the native Chinese speaker on how to write good academic English. English Exposed: Common Mistakes Made by Chinese Speakers is divided into three main sections. The first section examines errors made with verbs, nouns, prepositions, and other grammatical classes of words. The second section focuses on problems of word choice. In addition to helping the reader find the right word, it provides instruction for selecting the right style too. The third section covers a variety of other areas essential for the academic writer, such as using punctuation, adding appropriate references, referring to tables and figures, and selecting among various English date and time phrases. Using English Exposed will allow a writer to produce material where content and ideas—not language mistakes—speak the loudest.

Book Cases on Error Analysis in Foreign Language Technical Writing

Download or read book Cases on Error Analysis in Foreign Language Technical Writing written by Lebedeva, Nadezhda Anatolievna and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a clear tendency to consider the errors committed by learners in the process of learning a foreign language not as a negative aspect but as a natural process in the development of their language skills. In the past, teachers and researchers pondered these errors as something unfavorable, something to prevent from occurring at all costs. In order to regulate this appearance of errors, many researchers in the field of foreign language technical teaching have started to study and track the errors made by these students. Knowing the most common types of errors is an important and necessary step to inform teachers about where to direct their efforts regarding the most problematic areas students face while producing their technical writing assignments in a foreign language. Cases on Error Analysis in Foreign Language Technical Writing provides relevant theoretical foundations and the latest empirical research findings in the area of error analysis in foreign language technical writing. This book also summarizes the experience of teaching a foreign language for professional purposes in various fields of higher education. Covering topics such as error analysis, lexical skills, and writing outputs, this casebook is an essential resource for preservice teachers, educators, administrators, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Abstract: Abstract Many studies have revealed how one's native language (L1) can influence learners in second language (L2) learning. Due to the influence of the L1, learners are often said to produce an 'interlanguage'. According to different studies at different time in Hong Kong (Webster et la, 1987; Tse, 1988; Newbrook, 1990; Bunton, 1991; Bolton 2005), the frequency of the errors concerning determiners varies a lot. Tse and Bolton found that determiners are high frequency errors in students' work. The present study aims to (i) analyze the interlanguage / transfer errors concerning determiners in English writing of Chinese learners from a secondary school in Hong Kong, (ii) categorise these errors in terms of error types in a systematic and coherent fashion and (iii) attempt to discover whether such errors occur as the result of transfer from the students' L1 or as the result of other factors. The findings suggest that around two thirds of the errors identified are greatly influenced by learners' L1, and that about 20% of the errors in total may be related to other factors intrinsic to the system of determiners in English. Book Attitudinal Evaluation in Chinese University Students English Writing

Download or read book Attitudinal Evaluation in Chinese University Students English Writing written by Xinghua Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers up-to-date insights into the long-standing controversy of whether or not Chinese learners of English adequately express their attitudes in written English. It compares four writing datasets from three groups of student writers (e.g., English-speaking students’ English texts, Chinese-speaking students’ Chinese texts, and both English and Chinese texts produced by the same group of Chinese-speaking students majoring in English), and applies the appraisal framework, an analytical tool developed in the field of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The book provides a nuanced view of the deployment of attitudinal patterns and the linguistic resources used for attitudinal evaluation in Chinese students’ English writing. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for all those interested in second language writing, contrastive rhetoric, second language acquisition and systemic functional linguistics.
