Download or read book A History of the United States Since the Civil War Vol 2 of 5 written by Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Since the Civil War, Vol. 2 of 5: 1868-72 Many men were building railroads. Others were exploring the mineral wealth of Alabama and Tennessee. Deposits Of marl and phosphate were being put to commercial use. The seed of the cotton which had been held to be without value was beginning to be crushed in mills where the oil was ex pressed from it and the fibre was converted into guano. Tim ber was being felled and sawed into lumber. Quarries were yielding valuable marble and granite. Commercial convem tions assembled in several cities of the South to discuss the advancement of trade. Everywhere there were agricultural fairs for the competitive display of farm products. A grow ing interest was manifested in the improvement of the soil. In 1870 Georgia expended for commercial ma nures, one fifth as much, so it was said, as was being laid out in a year for the fertilization Of the land in Great Britain. But progress in all directions was obstructed by political agitation and social disturbance. Outside capital which was needed for development would come sparingly, immigrants would settle reluctantly in a country which was in the midst of such an uproar as attended reconstruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American History volume 2 gives a wide overview of America’s history from the end of the Civil War era, to the political and cultural struggles of contemporary times. Thomas S. Kidd employs lessons learned from his own scholarly expertise and history classes to weave together a compelling narrative of the defeats and triumphs that have defined the American national experience. Unlike many textbooks of modern American history, religion and faith remain central aspects of the book’s coverage, through present-day America. It gives detailed treatment of episodes such as America’s military conflicts, the Civil Rights movement, and the culture wars of the past half-century. Professor Kidd also considers the development of America’s obsession with entertainment, from the rise of the first movies, to the social media age. American History volume 2 will help students wrestle with the political and cultural changes that have dramatically transformed contemporary American life

Book The United States of America Vol 2

Download or read book The United States of America Vol 2 written by David Saville Muzzey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States of America, Vol. 2: From the Civil War To do justice to these chief problems of our history since the Civil War - the grievances of the agrarian West, the amazing growth of industry with its effects upon the relations between capital and labor and between the government and big business, and the summons to America to play a part in the common task of world stabilization commensurate with her power and pre's tige - requires far greater emphasis upon economic and inter national topics than. They received in Volume I. For the rest, the present volume follows its predecessor closely in structure and purpose. The author has sought to present the material in form and treatment sufficiently mature to give the college student the sense of a new and more exacting method of approach to American history, rather than merely to repeat in fuller detail, but on essentially the same plane, the facts which he learned in school; to emphasize continuity by developing important move ments in a topical, evolutionary treatment, rather than adhering too strictly to a chronological scheme which would tend to distribute the material in annalistic fragments; and to give vividness to the narration by emphasizing the personality of the outstanding figures of the period (who, after all, make the history) and letting them tell the story to a considerable extent in their own words. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 2 An essential part of the original plan of the writer, and which has been carried out, was to make a personal visit to the principal battle-fields and other places of interest connected with the Civil War. This could not be done within the Con federate lines during the war, and it was difficult to do 'so in many places for several months after: the conflict had ceased. As much as possible of this labor was accomplished before the completion of the first volume, in which the events of the con flict, civil and military, to the close of the first battle of Bull's Run, are recorded.
