Book A Short History of Ireland Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of Ireland Classic Reprint written by Constantia Maxwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Ireland MY endeavour in writing this little book has been to present a clear and impartial account of the chief features of Irish' History. In view of the notable gaps which exist in the scientific treatment of social and economic questions, I have purposely dealt mainly with political events. I have also intentionally neglected the important subjects of Celtic mythology and literature, as being beyond the scope of an elementary historical text book. A work of this kind is necessarily based upon secondary sources I have, therefore, appended a short list of those authorities to which I am indebted. Book A Concise History of Ireland from the Earliest Times to 1837 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Ireland From the Earliest Times to 1837 Tms little book, down to 1608, is an abridgment of my larger work, A Short History of Ireland, of which the very words are used here as far as possible. The portion from 1608 to 1887 is new. The whole book is of necessity greatly condensed, containing much matter in little space but it is not a cram book. It is a connected, intelligible narrative, into which I have tried to infuse some life and human interest. The series of short Chapters forming Part I., on the Literature, Art, and Institutions of ancient Ireland, will, I hope, prove useful; and perhaps they may be found interesting. In four of them I have given, in language as simme and clear as I could command, a popular exposition of a subject not easy to deal with - the Brehon Laws, including those relating to land. Download or read book A Concise History of Ireland written by P. W. Joyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Ireland In writing this book I have generally followed the plan of weaving the narrative round important events and leading personages. This method, while in no degree interfering with the continuity of the History, has enabled me to divide the whole book into short chapters, each forming a distinct narrative or story more or less complete; and it has aided me in my endeavour to make the History of Ireland interesting and attractive. Without descending to childish phraseology, I have done my best to make the language so simple and plain that any child can understand it who is able to read English with facility. My constant aim has been to make the book easy to read and easy to understand. Above all I have tried to write soberly and moderately, avoiding exaggeration and bitterness, pointing out extenuating circumstances where it was just and right to do so, giving credit where credit is due, and showing fair play all round. Book History of Ireland Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ireland These two gentlemen proceeded to fulfil their mission, but their expostulations pro duced no effect, and they found that the only effect of their arrival was immediately to turn all thoughts upon Wexford, where it was determined to proceed without delay. Fitzgerald, willingly or by constraint, re mained with the insurgents, and marched with them that evening to a new encamp ment at the Three Rocks, not more than two miles and-a-half from Wexford. Three Rocks is the termination of a long but not high ridge of hills, called the Mountain of Forth, separating the baronies of Bargy and Forth from the rest of the county. Col clough returned direct to Wexford, where he arrived early in the evening, and having waited in the Bull-ring till the officers and other gentlemen in the town had assembled, he gave them an account of his proceedings, and announced that it was the intention of the rebels to attack the town. He then called on Mr. Harvey at the jail, with whom he agreed to return next day and change places with him, after which he set off through the barony of Forth to his own dwelling at Ballyleigh, which was about ten miles distant from Wexford. Book Ireland s Story

Download or read book Ireland s Story written by Charles Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland's Story: A Short History of Ireland for Schools, Reading Circles, and General Readers "Ireland's Story" has been written not as a record of the dead past, but as a beacon for the living future. It is inspired by a belief in the Irish race, now spread far beyond its island home, through many lands, beneath many skies. The Irish race has a great part to play in the history of the future; and present and future can be understood only by a knowledge of the past. The story of Ireland may be viewed in many ways. First, as a part of universal history: its ancient traditions are rich and full of clues to the races of the early world; its archaic treasures are abundant; its old stone monuments wonderfully preserved. In illumining the shadowy dawn of early Europe, and especially of those northern lands whose children now lead the world, no country can aid us so much as Ireland. Then we must reckon Ireland's early heroic poems and tales, ampler than those of any European land, save only Greece and Italy, and giving us the truest and richest picture of the archaic life of Europe, still untouched by Greece and Rome. The great personages of the Irish epics stand out as clear as the heroic figures who fought around Troy, or the inspired leaders of Attica and Sparta and the City of the Seven Hills. Next comes Ireland's part in the Drama of Faith. Ireland may well be called the new Ark of the Covenant; for in the little western isle was stored up the treasure of the Gospel, brought thither first by Patrick. Book A Short History of Ireland

Download or read book A Short History of Ireland written by P. W. Joyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Ireland: From the Earliest Times to 1608 IN a short Preface I wish to draw attention to some Special features of this book. Most readers will perceive that the mode of treating the subject is somewhat new. The chapters forming Part I., on the literature, art, and institutions of ancient Ireland, will, I hope, prove useful; and perhaps they may be found interesting. They do not pretend to be deep or exhaustive; but, while setting them forth in language as Simple, clear, and readable as I could command, I have tried to make them comprehensive so far as the limits allowed, and thoroughly accurate. In five short chapters is given a popular exposition of a subject not easy to deal with-the Brehon Laws. The interpretation of these laws is often so difficult, and leaves SO much room for differences of opinion, that I have been at unusual pains to give references. The vexed question of land tenure has lately aroused very lively interest, and perhaps the public may be pleased to have an explanation of the main features of the ancient Irish land laws. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ireland The struggle for liberty of trade seems to have been this session carried to the other side of the channel, where it was warmly debated in the English house of commons. The state of Ireland had grown so cala mitons and alarming, that it called for immediate attention and relief. There be gan to appear in England a strong feeling of sympathy for the sister island, and the subject was alluded to on several occasions in the English house of commons, until at length, on the second of April, lord Nugent moved that a committee of the whole house should be appointed to consider of the trade of Ireland. He observed, that the conduct of Great Britain towards its sister kingdom had been no less impolitic than unjust, and that the present situation of public affairs called particularly on this country to enter into a revision of the Irish trade laws. The only Opposition which showed itself against this measure at first originated with a few gentlemen, who from their situation as representatives of manufacturing towns or counties, entered into the prejudices of their constituents. Book Two Centuries of Irish History 1691 1870

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Centuries of Irish History, 1691-1870: With Introduction When this book was undertaken, in order to meet a wish expressed in many quarters for a concise and impartial narrative Of Irish history, the question arose Whether it should include the wholehistory Of the island from the earliest times. It was perceived that to do this would leave too little space for the treatment Of the later and more important periods; and it has therefore been judged the better course to begin the narrative at a point sufficiently remote to enable the more recent phenomena to be traced back to their causes, yet not so remote as to require many pages to be spent on the elucidation Of Obscure and disputed questions. Such a point presents itself in the year 1691, when the war Of the Revolution ended with the Treaty Of Limerick. This treaty, followed by the enactment Of the Penal Code, closes the era Of civil strife which had desolated Ireland for many years, and opens a new era in her relations with England. It has therefore been taken as the point of departure for the present book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But I leave him to be corrected by the torment of his own mind, and the contempt of his former friends, who, justly sensible of his ungenerous proceedings, his invincible malice, and his notorious want of capacity, have banished him their acquaintance, as an infamous renegado and wicked libeller upon the glory and honour of his native country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phases of Irish History The twelve Chapters in this volume delivered as lectures before public audiences in Dublin, make no pretence to form a full course of Irish history for any period. Their purpose is to correct and supple ment. For the standpoint taken, no apology is necessary. Neither apathy nor antipathy can ever bring out the truth of history. I have been guilty Of some inconsistency in my Spelling of early Irish names, writing sometimes earlier, sometimes later forms. In the Index, I have endeavoured to remedy this defect.
