Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of the English Flora A principal boject of Botany must always be to investigate the nature and qualities of plants, with a view to ascertain their various uses, and, in many cases, the best mode of cultivating them; but it has been proved that without a methodical arrangement the observations of individuals on these subjects cannot be accumulated, nor the discoveries of one age handed down to another. The ancients knew much, and wrote much, concerning vegetables; yet, from want of system, their discoveries are mostly lost, and their writings of comparatively little value. The several editions that have already been published of the "Compendium Floræ Britannicæ" and of some other manuals on the same subject, are deemed sufficient proofs of the usefulness of a brief description of our native plants, which we may carry in our hands during our excursions into the fields. Book Handbook of the British Flora

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the British Flora: A Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns Indigenous to or Naturalized in the British Isles, for the Use of Beginners and Amateurs When revising the fourth edition of my late friend's Hand book of the British Flora, I abstained from making other additions or alterations than appeared to me to be absolutely necessary, and consistent with the object of the work, which is, as stated in the title-page, for the use of beginners and amateurs. In the Preface to the first, 1858, but in no sub sequent edition, Mr. Bentham explained his motives for pre senting his work to the public, and the method he followed in preparing it: and inasmuch as he therein gives his reasons for adopting a different treatment of British plants from what obtains in other works devoted to our native Flora, it appears to me to be expedient, now that the editorship has passed into other hands, to repeat what he there says in his own words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Flora, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising the Phaenogamous, or Flowering Plants, and the Ferns The object which the Author proposed to himself, in preparing a new Flora of the British Empire, was of a twofold nature lstly, to provide the young Student with a description of our native plants, arranged according to the simplest method; and 2dly, to afiord to the more experienced Botanist, a manual, that Should be useful in the field as well as in the closet. In regard to the first object, the experience of nearly an hundred years has proved to every unprejudiced mind, that no system has appeared which can be compared to that of the immortal Swede for the facili@ with which it enables any one, hitherto unprac tised in Botany, to arrive at a knowledge of the Genus and Species of a plant. - The Linnaean Method is, therefore, here still, though not exclusively, adopted.
