Another Committee was at the same time appointed to make a critical examina tion of the A. O. U. Code of Nomenclature, with a view to amending some of its provisions, should such revision seem desirable. This Committee, after prolonged consideration of the subject, made its report, which was adopted by the Council of the Union, and a small edition of the revised Code was issued in July, The 'new Code' is thus the basis of the nomenclatural rulings of the present check-list. C., November 13 - 15, 1888, it was decided to publish a Supplement to the Union's check-list of North American Birds, consisting of the tenable species and subspecies, genera and subgenera, added since the publication of the Check - List, together with the necessary eliminations and the valid changes in nomenclature made since the check-list was issued. The work of revising the proposed additions and changes was referred to the Committee on Publications, with instructions to publish the results of their work at the earliest practicable date, as a Supplement to the check-list. The Committee held a six days' session immediately after the adjournment of the Union, the full Committee being present and participating in the work. The Supplement here pre sented records the ruling of the Committee on about one hundred distinct questions, involving additions to the Check List or changes in its nomenclature. Besides this, the Commit tee considered some twenty or thirty additional cases of similar character, in which the proposed changes were found untenable, or in which the material examined was not sufficient to deter mine the question of their validity; and its decision thereon may be thus considered as in the main negatively recorded in the following pages. In pursuance of this resolution the following Committee was appointed: Messrs. Coues, Allen, Ridgway, Brewster, and Henshaw. The Committee, having held numerous sessions in Washington and New York, presented its Report at the second Congress of the Union, held in New York, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, 1884, when the following resolution was adopted: - "Resolved, That the Report of the Committee on the Revision of the Nomenclature and Classification of North Ameircan Birds be accepted and adopted, and that it be recommitted to the Committee, with instructions to complete and submit it to the Council as soon as practicable; and that the Council be empowered and instructed to accept and adopt the Report as finally rendered, with such modifications as they may deem necessary, and to publish the same, copyrighted, in part or in whole, and in one or more forms, in the name and under the auspices of the American Ornithologists' Union."
