Book A Case Study of the Experiences of Five Former and Current Urban Non traditional Superintendents

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing number of traditional school boards and city mayors are looking for the next generation of school superintendents to come prepared with a variety of professional backgrounds to provide instructional leadership for school districts. The primary purpose of this qualitative study was to examine and describe the experiences, of five urban non-traditional superintendents. Associated research methods, namely interviews with study participants and the identification of major themes emerging from the data, were employed. Six emergent themes were revealed, including change agent, accountability, political connection/clout, school reform, student achievement and excellent leadership. Profiles of the participants were offered to provide a context for the results of this study. In relation to the major themes, these participants believed that their backgrounds in corporate worlds and other professions uniquely prepared them for the increased challenges of today's school superintendency. They all indicated that they assumed the helms in their respective school systems for altruistic reasons. However, once on the job, the participants noted that they suffered personally and professionally. They found themselves victims of little respect from the community, media and from their own governing bodies. In terms of preparation for the job, the non-traditional superintendents practiced self-study through reading leadership and journal articles and by attending conferences. The participants also experienced different challenges in gaining certification for the superintendency due to disparate state regulations governing licensure. Several recommendations resulted from the findings of this study. Since academic performance is the primary indicator of success or failure in education today, future researchers in this area might consider a quantitative analysis of student achievement in districts led by non-traditional superintendents compared to academic performance in those systems led by their traditional counterparts. In addition, it is suggested that these participants' views on superintendent preparation and certification and on governance issues may be considered by school districts, state and federal agencies and by universities as they develop future policy and programs. Other recommendations addressed the need to study female non-traditional superintendent governance and non-traditional leaders in smaller school districts as it relates to these issues.

Book Non Traditional Public School Superintendents An Exploratory Case Study

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined the characteristics of six non-traditional educational leaders from sixty-six of the largest school districts in the country (the Council of the Great City Schools). The study addressed the "what, how, and why" of non-traditional superintendents, focusing on how their non-traditional backgrounds influenced or impacted the performance of their duties as leaders. Areas of specific interest were commonalities in backgrounds, training, and experience. The background and experiences non-traditional superintendents draw upon when hiring school administrators and approving/implementing school reform initiatives was examined, as were the knowledge, skills, and⁄or traits non-traditional superintendents believed were essential for success. Individual interviews targeted the superintendents' specific backgrounds, preparation, experience, and skill sets that guided their decision making process. Responses were coded to establish trends and commonalities among these leaders. Findings indicate that a comparative longitudinal study encompassing both traditional and non-traditional superintendents would yield greater insight into the effectiveness of superintendents. Also, the findings indicate that there are individuals who can effectively transfer professional skill sets acquired from the private sector to the public school arena.

Book A Multi Case Study of Five Female Urban Superintendents

Download or read book A Multi Case Study of Five Female Urban Superintendents written by Jeanne L. Stroh and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban school leaders, particularly superintendents are on the frontlines for raising student achievement at all levels. The work of urban superintendents is intensive given the challenges they encounter. Research has indicated that school leaders who possess and enact skills and knowledge that support change leadership. The question, then, is this: what patterns and themes exist in the use of those attributes by female urban superintendents, to support systemic changes in their school districts. This researcher chose to look at these attributes through the lens of female urban superintendents who were members of the Council of Great City Schools, who had at least three years tenure in the district, and who had realized increased student achievement during their tenure. This study identified and described through case studies the attributes that emerged from the data. Each of the five participants were interviewed twice with questions based on the leadership attributes Reeves (2007) described, the change attributes Fullan (2009) and Knoster, Villa and Thousand (2000) identified, and the superintendent challenges described by the Texas Education Agency (2007). In addition to the interviews, biographies and vitas were collected. Other artifacts such as news articles, television interviews, district newsletters, and district websites were also reviewed. The study revealed that there were patterns and themes that emerged based on the leadership and change attributes, and the challenges urban female superintendents encountered. The leadership attributes defined by Reeves (2007) were: communication, vision, relationships, building capacity in others, access the expertise of others, and decision making. The change attributes defined by Fullan (2009) and Knoster, Villa and Thousand (2000) were: vision, skills, incentives, resources, and action plan. The implications of this study revealed that below the surface of these important attributes and challenges lay social justice issues that may first need to be addressed.
