With him comes the military, a team of top-secret scientists studying the secrets of the Radium Halos, and the shattering revelation that Zoe's dad has been lying to her. Worse still, Rylee's killer, in a display of terrifying new powers, has escaped the secure psychiatric facility that held her. Book excerpt: Mrs. Pierpoint and her daughter, Ethel, visit Zoe Blundell to inquire about the possibility of Leonard Ferris as a suitor for Ethel. Mrs. Pierpoint wants Zoe?s opinion because Leonard is one of Zoe?s tame robins, a group of male friends and admirers who gathers around Zoe. Unknown to the Pierpoints, Zoe?s marriage is breaking up and Leonard is sexually attracted to Zoe. Zoe at first believes her relationship with Leonard is harmless because she feels much, much older than he. Leonard is thirty-two years old, five years younger than Zoe, but he is a ?fresh, boyish young man? and Zoe is a ?mature woman.? Zoe?s husband, Theodore, is forty-six years old. Zoe?s perspective reflects society?s double standard that an older man may be interested in a younger woman but an older woman should not be interested in a younger man. After the Pierpoints leave, Leonard arrives to see Zoe and confesses he does not want to marry anyone, although he is attracted to Ethel because she reminds him of Zoe.

Book excerpt: Summary: The Nephilim were huge, ancient beings who came out of sleep thousands of years ago to find a beautiful and mysterious place where they could return to the world, they used to live in. The world's people thought this problem was impossible to solve, but hope came in the form of an odd group of young heroes with strange skills. Mia, a smart girl who was naturally good at leading, Alex, a guy who could do amazing things with technology, and Zoe, a girl who could talk to animals in ways no one else could. Along with other kids who were found to have strange skills, they made a squad that was unlike any other. They had to deal with a lot of problems that tried their strength, friendship, and commitment. Mia's analytical thought, Alex's creative ideas, and Zoe's love of the outdoors helped them learn how to work together and get through anything. Leo, an ancient fighter who had fought the Nephilim himself, helped them improve their skills and get ready for the battle with the giants from long ago. The heroes went into the Nephilim's underground realm, where they had to avoid dangerous traps and find out who their old enemies were. During a series of battles that really tried them, their bravery and unity were put to the test. Though they had doubts and felt hopeless, their bond grew stronger, and they stayed determined. It was their teamwork and individual skill that showed in the final fight, which is how they beat the Nephilim and kept the world from ending. As the world went back to being peaceful, Mia, Alex, Zoe, and their new friends became great heroes. They not only stopped the Nephilim's plan, but they also found out how strong they were. When they learned that they could get through anything as long as they stood together, they did. Their trip showed how important it is to stick together, be brave, and be united when things get hard. It shows that even the most unusual people can make the world a better place through this brave and exciting story. It shows that you can handle any problem if you are brave, work together, and believe in yourself. With their unique skills and unwavering dedication, the heroes of this book tell us that we can all change the world—we just need to find our way and share it with others. Chapter 1: Growing Up Strange things started happening in the normally calm and peaceful town of Greenwood, which made the people who lived there curious and interested. They could feel a small jolt under their feet. It wasn't very strong, but it was there. There was a lot of mystery around the town. It was like the earth was whispering secrets, making little noises in the air and moving the leaves on the trees. These whispers weren't just crazy thoughts; they were signs that something big was about to happen. They were coming out of a deep sleep deep below the earth's surface, out of sight of people. That's not what these creatures looked like; they were giants from another time, with abilities and sizes that humans can't even imagine. According to legends, they were very powerful and smart beings that used to roam the world freely, interact with people, and change the course of human history with their huge hands. But as time went on, their presence became less clear as they disappeared into mythology. Eventually, they were only mentioned in stories told around the campfire. The Nephilim have been sleeping for generations, hidden so deep that no one can see them. They may have been under the earth's surface or on worlds that humans can't even imagine. They didn't just appear out of the blue; the Nephilim planned and organized it. From their deep homes, they had seen how the world had changed. Now, they felt it was time to take back their rightful place on earth. They were dying to go back to places they knew and see how the skies and oceans had changed so much while still being beautiful. When they woke up, the world shook, but the people above only felt small tremors and whispers. These were the Nephilim's first steps out of hiding, the first signs that they were coming back. As a way to take back the world, they planned to come out of hiding and walk through the woods, mountains, and rivers they had known since the beginning of time. Not because they wanted to take over, but because they wanted to go back to the world they used to live in and be a part of. The Greenwood people had no idea that old animals were hiding under them, and they also had no idea what was really going on with these strange events. The awakening of the Nephilim from their sleep was a historical event that changed the course of history and made us question what we think we know about myth and truth. It felt like the ground was shaking a little, and the air was murmuring louder, which meant that something special was coming. More than just reestablishing their position on Earth, the Nephilim's awakening was also about crossing the huge gap in time that separated them from the present day. Because they came, everyone on Earth, including the people who lived in Greenwood, would have to rethink what they knew about the past, the secrets, and the nature of the people who lived on Earth in the past. The Greenwood children, on the other hand, were not scared when the Nephilim woke up. They wondered what was going on and were amazed by the earth shaking and mumbling. They made up crazy stories about giants roaming the land and hidden treasures coming to life because they didn't know how true their games were. They let their minds run wild and thought they were heroes and adventurers in a story that was happening right in front of them. The signs were more worrying for the adults. The whispers carried by the wind, the tremors that no one could explain, and the small changes in the environment were all mysteries that could not be easily explained by reasoning or science. A lot of people talk about their thoughts and worries at dinner tables and across fences. Even though people were becoming more curious and worried, there was a sense of togetherness and strength. Even though the people of Greenwood were confused about what was going on, they found strength in each other and got ready for whatever came next. The Nephilim wanted to bring back respect among people instead of fear as they got ready to enter the modern world. They wanted to share the ancient information they had learned, see how civilizations had grown, and maybe serve as a reminder to people of the planet's secrets and wonders. They wanted to wake people up from their physical sleep and remind them of the planet's beauty and mystery. The peaceful town of Greenwood was where myths were about to come true. It was at the point where the past and the present met. The reawakening of the Nephilim showed how the mysterious and old could still have an effect on a culture that had almost forgotten about the magic that was hiding beneath the surface. When the Nephilim rose, a new part of Earth's history would begin, made up of threads from the oldest stories people know. The emotions and imaginations of everyone who met them would also be changed. Chapter 2: The Call. A young girl named Mia lived in the middle of Greenwood's quiet town, in the middle of all the strange things that were making people there suspicious and scared. Mia wasn't like most kids her age. She was very smart, always interested, and eager to fix all the problems in the world. She made a lot of new finds because she liked to take risks, but nothing could have prepared her for the one she was about to make. Mia was curious, so one day she went to the top of her family home, where she heard the sounds of the earth's changes getting louder and felt energy that she couldn't see. There were lost treasures and secrets in the attic, which was full of old boxes and dusty books that hadn't been opened in years. Mia found an old book that looked like it was calling her among the historical artifacts. Even though the pages were turning yellow, and the cover was worn, Mia couldn't explain how she felt when she touched the spine of the book.

Book excerpt: An enthralling, historically rich, small-town mystery in which a teen works with her deceased sister to solve an assumed murder. Sixteen-year-old Clara Morris is facing an awkward summer with her father in the tiny upstate town of Redmarch Lake. Clara’s relationship with her parents—and with life in general—has been strained since she lost her twin sister, Zoe, when the girls were eight. As a child, her sister had been her whole world—they even shared a secret invented twin language. Clara has managed to rebuild herself as best she can, but she still feels a hole in her life from the absence of her twin, and she suspects she always will. She soon finds that Redmarch Lake, where her father’s family has lived for generations, is a very unusual place. The townspeople live by odd rules and superstitions. The eerily calm lake the town is named for both fascinates and repels her. The town’s young people are just as odd and unfriendly as their parents. Clara manages to befriend the one boy willing to talk to an outsider, but he disappears during a party in the woods. The next day, he is found dead in the lake under mysterious circumstances. The townspeople all treat this as a tragic accident. Clara isn’t buying it, but she doesn’t know what to do until she receives a mysterious note hinting at murder—a note written in the language she shared with her twin sister, Zoe.
