Book Zen and the Art of Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Zen and the Art of Multiple Sclerosis written by Jeff Pinney and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JEFF PINNEY LOOKS BACK AT HIS STRUGGLES WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WHILE HOMESTEADING IN RURAL ONTARIO AS AN ARTIST AND WOOD CARVER. Jeff Pinney, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, had already gone through a series of dead-end jobs and luckless relationships by the age of thirty. He thought things couldn't get much worse until he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Knowing he would suffer progressive neuromuscular deterioration in the coming years, he struck out for the country to enjoy life. While homesteading in the Haliburton highlands, he enjoyed the beauty of the natural world. His life took on an increasingly spiritual dimension as he built his home, made art, and honed his skills as a wood-carver. He overcame pain and discomfort by concentrating, applying himself, and practising Zen meditation. Rather than dwell upon the ways the disease has affected him physically, Jeff explores how he dealt with it in mental and emotional terms. He also shares his candid thoughts on treatment options for MS patients. From his porch above the beaver meadow, Jeff Pinney contemplates storms of an inner and outer nature. Bound to his wheelchair, he is beset with cabin fever; but the beauty of the world, as he recounts in Zen and the Art of Multiple Sclerosis, consoles and uplifts him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about emptiness and silence—the mind-expanding emptiness of Zen painting, and the reverberating silence of haiku poetry. Through imaginative participation in the visions of painters and poets, its readers are led to the realization that, in the author's words, "emptiness, silence, is not nothingness, but fullness. Your fullness." This cultural tradition has informed many distinguished lives and works of art. The work of painters like Niten, Liang K'ai, and Toba, and of painters like Basho, Buson, and Issa reflects the wholeness, spontaneity, and humanity of the Zen vision. Those who desire a glimpse into the world of intuitive contact with nature offered by Zen meditation will find these paintings, commentaries, and haiku poems especially rewarding. They enable the reader to experience the unique power of Zen art—it's capacity to fuse esthetic appreciation, personal intuition, and knowledge of life into one creative event.

Book Mitochondrial Biology and Experimental Therapeutics

Download or read book Mitochondrial Biology and Experimental Therapeutics written by Paulo J. Oliveira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the therapeutic strategies to target mitochondrial metabolism in diseases where the function of that organelle is compromised, and it discusses the effective strategies used to create mitochondrial-targeted agents that can become commercially available drug delivery platforms. The consistent growth of research focused in understanding the multifaceted role of mitochondria in cellular metabolism, controlling pathways related with cell death, and ionic/redox regulation has extended the research of mitochondrial chemical-biological interactions to include various pharmacological and toxicological applications. Not only does the book extensively cover basic mitochondrial physiology, but it also links the molecular interactions within these pathways to a variety of diseases. It is one of the first books to combine state-of-the-art reviews regarding basic mitochondrial biology, the role of mitochondrial alterations in different diseases, and the importance of that organelle as a target for pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to improve human health. The different chapters highlight the chemical-biological linkages of the mitochondria in context with drug development and clinical applications.

Download or read book Zen and the Art of Medicine written by Dr. Victor Denis Purcell Cert-Hom and published by Dr Victor Denis Purcell. This book was released on 2023-11-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen and the Art of Medicine: A Comprehensive Synopsis “Zen and the Art of Medicine” offers a transformative exploration into the deep-seated integration of Zen principles within medical practice. The book seamlessly marries the age-old wisdom of Zen with contemporary medical paradigms, revealing a holistic approach to healthcare that transcends mere physical treatments and addresses the entirety of the human experience. The journey commences with a historical exposition on the “Convergence of Zen and Medicine.” The reader is introduced to the shared goal of both fields: alleviating human suffering. Throughout history, both Zen and medicine have sought to understand and mitigate the various dimensions of human pain, be it physical, emotional, or spiritual. As the narrative progresses to “The Mindful Physician,” the importance of presence, focus, and deep engagement in medical practice is underscored. Through the teachings of Zen, healthcare professionals are guided towards cultivating a profound awareness, which has been shown to enhance patient interactions, lead to sharper diagnoses, and foster a more rewarding medical journey for both the healer and the healed. The emphasis then shifts to the essence of “Compassionate Care.” Rooted in the core tenets of Zen, the book elucidates the vital role of empathy in medical treatments. By nurturing a genuine connection between the caregiver and the patient, healing becomes a comprehensive experience transcending the physical realm. “Zen, Meditation, and Stress Reduction” delves into the myriad benefits of Zen practices in bolstering cognitive function and reducing professional burnout. As the medical field grapples with increasing pressures, the chapter offers invaluable insights into how meditation can serve as a sanctuary, promoting the well-being of medical practitioners and, by extension, their patients. With “Considerations of Medical Ethics,” readers are taken through the moral dilemmas that define modern medicine. The chapter sheds light on how the Zen philosophy, emphasizing interconnectedness and mutual respect, can serve as a compass, guiding practitioners toward ethically sound decisions. The narrative then touches upon the nuanced role of “Intuition in the Art of Diagnosis.” Contrary to the strict empirical methods synonymous with medicine, this section advocates for the integration of intuition—a cornerstone of Zen—into the diagnostic process. Such a fusion can lead to more holistic and precise patient evaluations. “Zen and End-of-Life Care” offers a poignant reflection on the inevitable closure that defines human existence. Through the serene lens of Zen, the chapter guides approaching end-of-life scenarios with dignity, grace, and profound compassion. The book culminates with a visionary glance into “The Future of Zen-Inspired Medicine,” envisaging a healthcare system deeply influenced by Zen teachings. Such an integration promises a medical realm that is technically proficient and intrinsically humane, championing holistic well-being. In its entirety, “Zen and the Art of Medicine” serves as a revolutionary guide, urging the medical world to embrace a more enlightened, compassionate, and holistic approach deeply rooted in the timeless wisdom of Zen.
