Book Zealous Reformers Deadly Laws

Download or read book Zealous Reformers Deadly Laws written by Madhu Kishwar and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by one of the pioneers of the contemporary women's rights movement in India, delves deeply into legislation and law enforcement to explore the reasons why laws enacted for the purpose of enforcing women's rights in India end up producing such dismal results. The compilation also reviews the author's own role in the women's movement and contains a critical evaluation of feminist interventions for legal reform. A running theme in the book is the need to adopt a culturally sensitive approach to social reform that respects the aspirations and cherished values of those in whose lives we wish to introduce changes.

Book Marginalized Mobilized Incorporated

Download or read book Marginalized Mobilized Incorporated written by Rina Verma Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How has the participation of women in Hindu nationalist politics in India changed over time, and what has their changing participation meant for women, for Hindu nationalism, and for Indian democracy? In the wake of the BJP's consolidation of power after the 2019 election, Marginalized, Mobilized, Incorporated places women's participation in religious politics in India into historical and comparative perspective to understand the critical role of women and gender in the movement's rise and how it has evolved over time. Marginalized, Mobilized, Incorporated draws on significant new data sources, gathered over a decade of fieldwork in India, including newly uncovered archival documents on a women's wing of the Hindu Mahasabha; interviews with key BJP leaders; and ethnographic observation, voting data, and visual campaign materials. I compare three critical time periods to show how Hindu nationalism has increasingly involved women in its politics over time. In its formative years in the early 1900s, Hindu nationalism marginalized women; in the 1980s the BJP mobilized them; and today, the BJP has incorporated women into its structures and activities. Incorporating women into Hindu nationalist politics has significantly advanced the BJP's electoral success compared to prior periods when women were marginalized or mobilized in more limited ways. For the BJP, women's incorporation works to normalize religious nationalism in Indian democracy; however, incorporation has not been emancipatory for women, whose participation in BJP politics remains predicated on traditional gender ideologies that tether women to their social roles in the home and family"--

Download or read book Family Law written by Flavia Agnes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family law in India has a complex legal structure where different religious communities are guided by their own personal laws, each of which historically evolved under various social, religious, political, and legal influences. In two comprehensive and lucid volumes, Flavia Agnes, a leading activist and advocate in the area, examines family law in the light of social realities, contemporary rights discourse, and the idea of justice. What is unique in these volumes is that the ground level litigation practices around women's rights are interwoven with the critical analyses of the statutory provisions. Relying extensively upon case law, Volume 2 examines: the litigation around the validity of marriage and procedures for dissolving it, the contemporary debates around issues such as child marriages, NRI marriages, and registration of marriages the framework of law on the issues of maintenance, matrimonial residence, and custody and guardianship of children, and whether considering the procedural aspects of matrimonial law, and the increased powers of the family courts, gender justice concerns are being adequately addressed. The volume also emphasizes that it is necessary and possible for the law to fairly reflect individual and social contingencies at the ground level.

Book Family Ambiguity and Domestic Violence in Asia

Download or read book Family Ambiguity and Domestic Violence in Asia written by Maznah Mohamad and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic violence in Asia is explored in this analysis through questions of family ambiguity and the relationship between concept, law, and strategy. Comparative experiences in the Asian context enable an examination of the effectiveness of family regulations and laws in diverse national, cultural, and religious settings. Key questions relate to the limits and relevance of the human rights discourse in resolving family conflicts; the extent to which power and control in intimate relationships can actually be regulated by a set of inanimate, homogeneous, and uniform policies and legislations; and how the state relates to the family as an ambiguous unit given state rules of governance that perpetuate unequal gender relations. Carefully considering the many components of domestic violence--such as state intervention versus the private domain and differences in legislation across Asia--the book offers new theoretical insights to the conceptualization of the family, culture, and law, and provides reasoned new perspectives on the effectiveness or inadequacy of present policies and enforcement strategies against domestic violence in Asia.

Book Border Towns and Border Crossings

Download or read book Border Towns and Border Crossings written by Roger Bruns and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compelling and revealing look at the history of the U.S.-Mexico border as a place, a symbol of cross-cultural melding, and a source of growing anxiety over immigration and national security. The U.S.-Mexico border is far more than a line that separates two countries. A winding path of nearly 2,000 miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, it is history, commerce, and culture. In recent years, however, attitudes about border crossings and border issues have hardened as has immigration policy. A source of growing anxiety over illegal immigration, national security, and safety, the border has become a symbol of political cataclysm over immigration law and enforcement, the future of DACA, the increasingly harsh treatment of refugees and others who attempt to cross without authorization, and the future of U.S. policy. This book traces the history of the border and its people, from the creation of the border line to explosive issues surrounding immigration and the future of the United States as a nation of diverse cultures and races.
