Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Classical Groups and Related Topics

Download or read book Classical Groups and Related Topics written by Alexander Hahn and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, L. K. Hua played a leading role in and exerted a great influence upon the development in China of modern mathematics, both pure and applied. His mathematical career began in 1931 at Tsinghua University where he continued as a professor for many years. Hua made many significant contributions to number theory, algebra, geometry, complex analysis, numerical analysis, and operations research. In particular, he initiated the study of classical groups in China and developed new matrix methods which, as applied by him as well as his followers, were instrumental in the successful attack of many problems. To honor his memory, a joint China-U.S. conference on Classical Groups and Related Topics was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing in May 1987. This volume represents the proceedings of that conference and contains both survey articles and research papers focusing on classical groups and closely related topics.

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. J. Blok and Don Pigozzi set out to try to answer the question of what it means for a logic to have algebraic semantics. In this seminal book they transformed the study of algebraic logic by giving a general framework for the study of logics by algebraic means. The Dutch mathematician W. J. Blok (1947-2003) received his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in 1979 and was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois, Chicago until his death in an automobile accident. Don Pigozzi (1935- ) grew up in Oakland, California, received his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970, and was Professor of Mathematics at Iowa State University until his retirement in 2002. The Advanced Reasoning Forum is pleased to make available in its Classic Reprints series this exact reproduction of the 1989 text, with a new errata sheet prepared by Don Pigozzi.

Book Stochastic Calculus and Stochastic Models

Download or read book Stochastic Calculus and Stochastic Models written by E. J. McShane and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Mathematical Statistics: A Series of Monographs and Textbooks: Stochastic Calculus and Stochastic Models focuses on the properties, functions, and applications of stochastic integrals. The publication first ponders on stochastic integrals, existence of stochastic integrals, and continuity, chain rule, and substitution. Discussions focus on differentiation of a composite function, continuity of sample functions, existence and vanishing of stochastic integrals, canonical form, elementary properties of integrals, and the Itô-belated integral. The book then examines stochastic differential equations, including existence of solutions of stochastic differential equations, linear differential equations and their adjoints, approximation lemma, and the Cauchy-Maruyama approximation. The manuscript takes a look at equations in canonical form, as well as justification of the canonical extension in stochastic modeling; rate of convergence of approximations to solutions; comparison of ordinary and stochastic differential equations; and invariance under change of coordinates. The publication is a dependable reference for mathematicians and researchers interested in stochastic integrals.

Book Partition Problems in Topology

Download or read book Partition Problems in Topology written by Stevo Todorcevic and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents results on the case of the Ramsey problem for the uncountable: When does a partition of a square of an uncountable set have an uncountable homogeneous set? This problem most frequently appears in areas of general topology, measure theory, and functional analysis. Building on his solution of one of the two most basic partition problems in general topology, the ``S-space problem,'' the author has unified most of the existing results on the subject and made many improvements and simplifications. The first eight sections of the book require basic knowldege of naive set theory at the level of a first year graduate or advanced undergraduate student. The book may also be of interest to the exclusively set-theoretic reader, for it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of forcing axioms of set theory, such as Martin's axiom and the Proper forcing axiom.

The primary emphasis of the book is on homotopy theory and its applications. The topics covered include elliptic cohomology, stable and unstable homotopy theory, classifying spaces, and equivariant homotopy and cohomology. Geometric topics--such as knot theory, divisors and configurations on surfaces, foliations, and Siegel spaces--are also discussed. Researchers wishing to follow current trends in algebraic topology will find this book a valuable resource.

Book Strategic Organizational Learning

Download or read book Strategic Organizational Learning written by Martha A. Gephart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the successes and challenges of leveraging organizational learning in effective strategy development and execution. The authors introduce a framework that helps organizations develop core capabilities to enable them to shift direction rapidly and proactively shape future environments. They also offer a wide selection of cases to illustrate this framework. While some cases highlight fundamental strategic change over time, others are snapshots of mechanisms gradually put in place to jointly optimize learning and performance. There is no one best or right way to leverage strategic organizational learning; different practices may lead to the same outcome and similar practices may lead to different outcomes. The system dynamics underlying such learning — not the simple adoption of one or other practice — are key to success in institutionalizing a performance-based learning approach.

Book 3 Manifolds which Are End 1 Movable

Download or read book 3 Manifolds which Are End 1 Movable written by Matthew G. Brin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper continues a series by the authors on non-compact 3-manifolds. We describe the structure, up to end homeomorphism, of those orientable, non-compact 3-manifolds in which all loops near infinity [symbol] homotop to infinity [symbol] while staying near infinity [symbol] (the proper homotopy condition "end 1-movability" of the title). This extends previous work by others and by the authors because end 1-movability is weaker than properties studied before, and also because our result is the first to analyse a class of non-compact 3-manifolds whose defining properties include neither irreducibilty nor compact boundary. Our main tool is the end reduction--introduced in our earlier papers, developed further. End reductions are "simple" approximations of a non-compact 3-manifold that capture many of the manifold's properties.

Book Representation Theory and Number Theory in Connection with the Local Langlands Conjecture

Download or read book Representation Theory and Number Theory in Connection with the Local Langlands Conjecture written by Jürgen Ritter and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Langlands Program summarizes those parts of mathematical research belonging to the representation theory of reductive groups and to class field theory. These two topics are connected by the vision that, roughly speaking, the irreducible representations of the general linear group may well serve as parameters for the description of all number fields. In the local case, the base field is a given $p$-adic field $K$ and the extension theory of $K$ is seen as determined by the irreducible representations of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$. Great progress has been made in establishing correspondence between the supercuspidal representations of $GL(n,K)$ and those irreducible representations of $G_K$ whose degrees divide $n$. Despite these advances, no book or paper has presented the different methods used or even collected known results. This volume contains the proceedings of the conference ``Representation Theory and Number Theory in Connection with the Local Langlands Conjecture,'' held in December 1985 at the University of Augsburg. The program of the conference was divided into two parts: (i) the representation theory of local division algebras and local Galois groups, and the Langlands conjecture in the tame case; and (ii) new results, such as the case $n=p$, the matching theorem, principal orders, tame Deligne representations, classification of representations of $GL(n)$, and the numerical Langlands conjecture. The collection of papers in this volume provides an excellent account of the current state of the local Langlands Program.
