Book Soybean Glycine Max L Merr Yield and Seed Quality as Influenced by Cultural Practices and Planting Patterns

Download or read book Soybean Glycine Max L Merr Yield and Seed Quality as Influenced by Cultural Practices and Planting Patterns written by J. Temba and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient use of agricultural inputs involves correct decisions on what production systems would give optimum yields. Good management decisions can only be made by considering information provided by research on crop responses to management practices. Field studies were conducted to determine the influence of planting date, row spacing, cultivar, seed treatment, depressing plants with tractor tires, and planting patterns on yield, seed quality, and agronomic characteristics of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). In Experiment 1 (1981 to 1982), treatments were five planting dates (May to July), row spacings (12,18, 38, and 76 cm), and cultivars ('Evans', 'Hodgson 78', and 'Corsoy 79'). The 18 cm plots were in pairs. One plot was planted with seed treated with Vitavax (5,6-dihydro-2-methyl-N-phenyl-1,4-oxathiin-3-carboxamide). 'Wells' was planted in Experiment 2 (1979 to 1980). Treatments were morning and afternoon, and growth stages when plants were depressed in 25 cm rows. In Experiment 3, four rippled canopies were compared with pure stands and blends of 'Wells II', 'SRF 200', and 'Gome' in 38 and76 cm row spacing in 1981 to 1982. In Experiment 4, six cultivars were planted in pairs in 38 cm rows, perpendicular to each other. In Experiment 5, seed from Experiment 1 was assayed for Diaporthe and Phomopsis infection and for germination. Delayed planting reduced yield. Narrow rows yield highest. Cultivars did not differ in yield. Yield in late planted narrow rows, with 'Evans' and 'Hodgson 78', was not reduced as much as in the 76 cm rows. Seed treatment did not influence yield or other characteristics. Morning and afternoon treatments were not different. Depressing plants did not reduce yield until flowering. Since most postemergence applications are done before flowering, yield reduction is compensated for by adjacent rows. Canopy designs were not different in yield. Light penetration was not affected by canopy designs. Crisscross planting did not affect yield. Direction of row changed competing ability of cultivars. Delayed planting reduced Phomopsis infection and improved germination. Seed quality in narrow rows was equal to or better than in wide rows. 'Evans' had more infection and lower germination than 'Corsoy 79'. Full season cultivars or delayed planting produced seed of good quality.

Book Optimizing Soybean Glycine Max L Yield with Nitrogen and Sulfur Applications

Download or read book Optimizing Soybean Glycine Max L Yield with Nitrogen and Sulfur Applications written by Kacey A. Cannon and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although soybean (Glycine max L.) yields have increased over the past decade, even greater improvement is in demand. Nontraditional practices such as applying nitrogen (N) to soybean for yield optimization, might be one way to meet this demand. Also, sulfur (S) is becoming a more important limiting nutrient in production due to higher yielding crops, lower S containing production inputs, and reduced supply from the environment. The N study involved two environments, irrigated and dryland, in Milan (35.9198° N, 88.7589° W) and Jackson (35.6145° N, 88.8139° W), TN in 2015 and 2016. Urea fertilizer treatments were 34, 67, and 101 kg N ha−1 (per hectare). Soybean height, nodes per plant, total biomass weight, biomass N concentration, total nodules per plant, total active nodules per plant, total adolescent nodules per plant, total nodule weight per plant, 100 seed weight, and yield were collected to evaluate treatment effects. Data analysis concluded that N applications significantly increased plant height, plant nodes, and plant biomass of soybean. However, N treatments significantly reduced active and adolescent nodule production. Soybean yield was not significantly increased by the N applications. The irrigated sites yielded at or below the dryland comparison, probably due to lodging, which may have compromised yield potential. The S study included soybean and corn (Zea mays L.) experiments, which were conducted in an S deficient soil in Milan, TN in 2015 and 2016. Ammonium sulfate treatments were 11, 23, and 34 kg S ha−1 (per hectare). Plant height, leaf S concentrations, seed S and N concentrations, 100 seed weight, and yield were collected to evaluate treatment effects. Data analysis concluded that S application significantly increased leaf S concentrations in corn but not soybean. Soybean and corn seed S was significantly increased but not seed N. Soybean yield was not increased, but corn yield was significantly increased 16% across all S rates, with no significant differences detected among S rates. Overall, results indicate N affected soybean growth and nodule development while the impact on yield was not demonstrated. In deficient soils, S fertilizer may improve corn yields, but may not be economical for soybean.

Book Understanding Soybean Yield Limiting Factors and the Potential for Agricultural Intensification in the U S and Brazil

Download or read book Understanding Soybean Yield Limiting Factors and the Potential for Agricultural Intensification in the U S and Brazil written by Giovani Stefani Fae and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On-farm and modeling research were used to better understand the impact of soil, plant and climate factors on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield. We analyzed yield gaps and solar radiation and water capture efficiencies in full season and double-cropping systems. First, to perform accurate model simulations, we needed a quick and yet accurate method to estimate soil texture of hundreds of samples. We accomplished that by refining a laser diffraction protocol that matched the results of standard sedimentation techniques. Second, to identify variables related to soybean yield variation, we studied 22 site-years over the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons in two regions of Pennsylvania. Solar radiation and water capture, both controlled by planting date, were the main predictors of soybean yield in these regions. The physical and biological soil metrics measured in the comprehensive Cornell Assessment of Soil Health did not correlate to soybean yields. However, the ratio of soil respiration to soil organic matter positively did so. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) and root depth correlated with both soybean yield and each other. Third, to assess yield gaps and to estimate how efficiently solar radiation and water were used in local environments, we calculated realized and potential indicators of resource capture in two locations in Pennsylvania and two in Southern Brazil using the simulation model Cycles. The measured yield gap varied from 5 to 48% suggesting great potential to increase soybean yields with the available solar radiation and water resources through improved management tactics in 3 of the 4 regions studied. In Pennsylvania, agricultural intensification is limited to double-cropping due to low temperatures that limit available solar radiation, while in some regions in Brazil it is possible to produce a third crop in a year. Finally, we organized an international tour in 2018 with 14 participants including producers and extension personnel from Pennsylvania to study sustainable soybean production systems in Brazil, and to encourage others we described the main organizational steps and the lessons we learned while planning and executing this tour.
