Book excerpt: A brilliant mix of battle, romance, family struggles, and personal triumphs, New York gloriously captures the search for freedom and prosperity at the heart of America's history. A blockbuster masterpiece that combines breath-taking scope with narrative immediacy, this grand historical epic traces the history of New York through the lenses of several families: The Van Dycks, a wealthy Dutch trading family; the Masters, scions of an English merchant clan torn apart during the Revolution; the Hudsons, slaves who fight for their freedom over several generations; the Murphys, who escape the Famine in Ireland and land in the chaotic slum of Five Points; the Rewards, robber barons of the Gilded Age; the Florinos, an immigrant Italian clan who work building the great skyscrapers in the 1920s; and the Rabinowitzs, who flee anti-semitism in Europe and build a new life in Brooklyn. Over time, the lives of these families become intertwined through the most momentous events in the fabric of America: The founding of the colonies; the Revolution; the growth of New York as a major port and trading centre; the Civil War; the Gilded Age; the explosion of immigration and the corruption of Tammany Hall; the rise of New York as a great world city in the early 20th-century; the trials of World War II, the tumult of the 1960s; the near-demise of the city in the 1970s; its roaring rebirth in the 1990s; culminating in the World Trade Center attacks at the beginning of the new century.

Book The Gang s All Queer

Download or read book The Gang s All Queer written by Vanessa R. Panfil and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2018 Distinguished Book Award presented by the American Sociological Association’s Sociology of Sexualities Section The first inside look at gay gang members. Many people believe that gangs are made up of violent thugs who are in and out of jail, and who are hyper-masculine and heterosexual. In The Gang’s All Queer, Vanessa Panfil introduces us to a different world. Meet gay gang members – sometimes referred to in popular culture as “homo thugs” – whose gay identity complicates criminology’s portrayal and representation of gangs, gang members, and gang life. In vivid detail, Panfil provides an in-depth understanding of how gay gang members construct and negotiate both masculine and gay identities through crime and gang membership. The Gang’s All Queer draws from interviews with over 50 gay gang- and crime-involved young men in Columbus, Ohio, the majority of whom are men of color in their late teens and early twenties, as well as on-the-ground ethnographic fieldwork with men who are in gay, hybrid, and straight gangs. Panfil provides an eye-opening portrait of how even members of straight gangs are connected to a same-sex oriented underground world. Most of these young men still present a traditionally masculine persona and voice deeply-held affection for their fellow gang members. They also fight with their enemies, many of whom are in rival gay gangs. Most come from impoverished, ‘rough’ neighborhoods, and seek to defy negative stereotypes of gay and Black men as deadbeats, though sometimes through illegal activity. Some are still closeted to their fellow gang members and families, yet others fight to defend members of the gay community, even those who they deem to be “fags,” despite distaste for these flamboyant members of the community. And some perform in drag shows or sell sex to survive. The Gang’s All Queer poignantly illustrates how these men both respond to and resist societal marginalization. Timely, powerful, and engaging, this book will challenge us to think differently about gangs, gay men, and urban life.

Book excerpt: It was meant to be a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Tōkyō. Nicola was working hard as an English teacher in Japan; she desperately needed a holiday. A long weekend with her boyfriend, Akira, and two other friends, Mai and Masashi, seemed ideal. The four of them would travel by Japan's safest form of transport, the shinkansen ('bullet train'), before boarding a ferry for the trip across to the quiet island of Sado. However, Nicola and her friends could never imagine that they would become caught up in a hijacking. Why would someone want to hijack this train? How would Nicola and her friends respond to being on a hijacked train? Would the police be able to catch those responsible? Hijacking Japan follows events in a real-time format during a dramatic day that threatens to bring the Japanese government to its knees.

Kirkus When newspaperman Henry Van Dyle is assassinated in Mexico City, agency stringer Jimmy Lamson, who was having an affair with Van Dyle's wife, is driven to investigate the mystery of his death. The clues point to a sinister cabal manipulating politics - and orchestrating Nazi interests - in Mexico City. But who is 'Señor Tom', the codenamed personage identified in Van Dyle's notebooks as the man pulling the strings? Arthur Calder-Marshall lived in Mexico before the outbreak of war and drew on his experiences to lend fidelity to this pacey, suspenseful, superbly written novel, first published in 1941, which Orson Welles tried to adapt for the cinema before making Citizen Kane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader, enclosed you will find a set of short stories. It includes actual events from the authors life, and imagined events from the authors mind. Fact and fiction so to speak. As with most books, except those heavy serious textbook tomes, the tales tell of personal and interpersonal emotions and actions. As the saying goes, we are not alone. Each and every one of us affects both each other and the world around us. Moreover, each and every one of us have talents, and unlike the servant who buried his given talents under a stone, the author believes that the sharing of talents can, in fact may, help someone or something somewhere. Maybe consciously or unconsciously, actively or unseen, small or enormously, each and every one of us has an opportunity to act. We could all do our bits to the best of our ability, the possible if you like, while still striving for the dream. We all have our own roads to Cuastecomate.

He died the next day. In The Great Prince Died, Bernard Wolfe offers his lyrical, fictionalized account of Trotsky’s assassination as witnessed through the eyes of an array of characters: the young American student helping to translate the exiled Trotsky’s work (and to guard him), the Mexican police chief, a Rumanian revolutionary, the assassin and his handlers, a poor Mexican “peón,” and Trotsky himself. Drawing on his own experiences working as the exiled Trotsky’s secretary and bodyguard and mixing in digressions on Mexican culture, Stalinist tactics, and Bolshevik history, Wolfe interweaves fantasy and fact, delusion and journalistic reporting to create one of the great political novels of the past century.

Book Random Thoughts

Download or read book Random Thoughts written by Vandana Sinha and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book RANDOM THOUGHTS is a compilation of write-ups, on those aspects of life I have felt and feel strongly about. Nostalgic reflections as I move down memory lane, reminiscing about the bygone days, sometimes with childish glee, sometimes with remorse and at other times with a hopeful hope. The writings likewise are a smooth blend of the past merging into the present and vice-versa. I write with candour, which most oft than not verges on to bluntness since I write straight from the heart, a sort of umbilical connect betwixt my thoughts and words. Words have an intangible power of coming alive, like a painting on a canvas, making the reader get lost amidst their folds. Random Thoughts I hope will give respite to the readers from the day-to-day stresses of life as they will traverse through the journey of my life with a keen involvement and interest. The writings were penned betwixt May 2012 and March 2014. Thank you.
