Book A Natural History of the Hawaiian Islands

Download or read book A Natural History of the Hawaiian Islands written by E. Alison Kay and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1994-12-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together recent primary source materials on major themes in Hawaiian natural history: the geological processes that have built the Islands; the physical factors that influence the Island's terrestrial ecosystems; the dynamics of the sea that support coral reefs, fish, and mollusks; the peculiarities of animals and plants that have evolved in the Islands and are found nowhere else; and the human impact on the land, plants, and animals.

Book Characteristics of Hawaiian Volcanoes

Download or read book Characteristics of Hawaiian Volcanoes written by Taeko Jane Takahashi and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2014 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics of Hawaiian Volcanoes establishes a benchmark for the currrent understanding of volcanism in Hawaii, and the articles herein build upon the elegant and pioneering work of Dutton, Jagger, Steams, and many other USGS and academic scientists. Each chapter synthesizes the lessons learned about a specific aspect of volcanism in Hawaii, based largely o continuous observation of eruptive activity and on systematic research into volcanic and earthquake processes during HVO's first 100 years. Book Leucocratic Gabbroic Xenoliths from Hual lai Volcano Hawai i

Download or read book Leucocratic Gabbroic Xenoliths from Hual lai Volcano Hawai i written by Patrick J. Shamberger and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magma storage conditions of the distinctive Pu'u Wa'awa'a (PWW) trachyte eruption on HuaHilai Volcano remain poorly understood. New mineral and whole-rock compositional data of plutonic nodules with similar evolved alkaline geochemical affinities may constrain these conditions. These advances offer insight into changes in magma storage depth during the shield to post-shield transition at HuaHilai Volcano. Summit xenoliths compose three suites: (1) chilled alkalic liquids and alkali-feldspar bearing gabbro cumulates, (2) sub-alkaline gabbro-norite cumulates, and (3) diverse xenoliths not apparently related to groups (1) or (2). Series (1) xenoliths may be related to the PWW trachyte. Thermodynamic models of clinopyroxene and feldspar compositions, fractionating assemblages inferred from bulk major and trace element compositions, and normative compositions of intermediate melts all indicate that the trachyte formed at pressures -3-7 kbar. This pressure range suggests reservoir depths significantly deeper than previous models of the PWW trachyte magma chamber and may indicate a shift to deeper magma storage at the onset of the post-shield stage. Finegrained dioritic xenoliths of series (1), which may approximate original liquid compositions, are all mildly silica-saturated, suggesting that the PWW trachyte fractionated from a hypersthene-normative alkalic or transitional parent, consistent with Pb isotopic evidence. Bulk compositions of these xenoliths partially fill the gap between erupted alkalic basalts (MgO >4 wt%, Si0249 wt%) and trachytes (MgO

Book Crustal Magmatic System Evolution

Download or read book Crustal Magmatic System Evolution written by Matteo Masotta and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive picture of the architecture of crustal magmatic systems The composition of igneous rocks – their minerals, melts, and fluids – reveals the physical and chemical conditions under which magmas form, evolve, interact, and move from the Earth’s mantle through the crust. These magma dynamics affect processes on the surface including crustal growth and eruptive behaviour of volcanoes. Crustal Magmatic System Evolution: Anatomy, Architecture, and Physico-Chemical Processes uses analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches to explore the diversity of crustal processes from magma differentiation and assimilation to eruption at the surface. Volume highlights include: Physical and chemical parameterization of crustal magmatic systems Experimental, theoretical and modelling approaches targeting crustal magmatic processes Timescales of crustal magmatic processes, including storage, recharge, and ascent through volcanic conduits The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Find out more about this book in a Q&A with the Editors.
