Book Brutalities A Love Story

Download or read book Brutalities A Love Story written by Margo Steines and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Brutalities is electric with insight, riveted by its commitments—to love and bewilderment, to bearing witness—and utterly propulsive." —Leslie Jamison, author of The Empathy Exams A searing, vivid memoir that investigates the dynamics of violence, power, desire, and a body pushed to the brink. Quarantined in a southwestern desert city in the midst of her high-risk pregnancy, Margo Steines felt her life narrow around her growing body, compelling her to reckon with the violence entangled in its history. She was a professional dominatrix in New York City, a homestead farmer in a brutal relationship, a welder on a high-rise building crew, and a mixed martial arts enthusiast; each of her many lives brought a new perspective on how power and masculinity coalesce—and how far she could push her body toward the brink. With unflinching candor, Steines searches for the roots of her erstwhile attraction to pain while charting the complicated triumph of gentleness and love.

  • ISBN : 9781594898853
  • Pages : 32 pages

Download or read book Contextual Ear Training written by Bruce Arnold and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comes with no CDs. You will need four CDs to work with this book. These CDs can be bought separately or you may download MP3 files from various on-line vendors. Contextual Ear Training is a major expansion of the "One Note" exercise from the "Fanatic's Guide to Sight Singing and Ear Training." Much of the material from the first few chapters of "Fanatic's Guide" is included in this book. This is because some students may be purchasing this book and not the "Fanatic's Guide." It's recommend that you first work with the "Fanatic's Guide" before using this book, although you can certainly work with both simulta-neously, to good effect. For some students working without the "Fanatic's Guide" may be fine but "Contextual Ear Training" assumes you have a fair degree of proficiency with the "One Note" exercise in "Fanatic's Guide." So to reiterate, if you find this book and associated CD too hard it would be suggest that first work with the "Fanatic's Guide." Although the "One Note" exercise is just the first exercise in "Fanatic's Guide" it's really the key to the whole methodology. Many students can easily sing through all exercises in the Fanatic's Guide once they have mastered the "One Note" exercise. However, It would still recommend getting the "Fanatic's Guide" because cases have be seen where a person has mastered the "One Note" technique but still has problems with the other "Fanatic's Guide" exercises, so it's prudent to make sure you are not one of those people. If you are new to this Ear Training Series its also recommend that you work with "Ear Training One Note Complete" book as a companion to this method. The "One Note" exercise is an extremely good exercise and thefour CDs that are available separately from this book really help a student to focus in on this technique in a structured way. Contextual Ear Training includes a music theory section and FAQ sec

Book The Inventors

Download or read book The Inventors written by Peter Selgin and published by Hawthorne Books. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Fall of 1970, at the start of eighth grade, Peter Selgin fell in love with the young teacher who’d arrived from Oxford wearing Frye boots, with long blond hair, and a passion for his students that was as intense as it was rebellious. The son of an emotionally remote inventor, Peter was also a twin competing for the attention and affection of his parents. He had a burning need to feel special. The new teacher supplied that need. Together they spent hours in the teacher’s carriage house, discussing books, playing chess, drinking tea, and wrestling. They were inseparable, until the teacher “resigned” from his job and left. Over the next ten years Peter and the teacher corresponded copiously and met occasionally, their last meeting ending in disaster. Only after the teacher died did Peter learn that he’d done all he could to evade his past, identifying himself first as an orphaned Rhodes Scholar, and later as a Native American. As for Peter’s father, the genius with the English accent who invented the first dollar-bill changing machine, he was the child of Italian Jews—something else Peter discovered only after his death. Paul Selgin and the teacher were both self-inventors, creatures of their own mythology, inscrutable men whose denials and deceptions betrayed the trust of the boy who looked up to them. The Inventors is the story of a man’s search for his father and a boy’s passionate relationship with his teacher, of how these two enigmas shaped that boy’s journey into manhood, filling him with a sense of his own unique destiny. It is a story of promises kept and broken as the author uncovers the truth—about both men, and about himself. For like them—like all of us—Peter Selgin, too, is his own inventor.

"You need to meet the public," she says, which is saying a lot for a woman deeply committed to the tightly knit religious community to which they belong. And meet the public Paul does: He meets Kirk, the angry gas station manager; Harry, a reclusive and kindly gangster; and a family of hippies passing in a yellow peace van to San Francisco. He also meets beautiful Peggy, a high school sensation, and dark-haired Dale, her onthe-side boyfriend who is headed to Vietnam. All of them come to the station – as well as girls on summer vacation, tanned and smelling of coconut oil, and ministers from Paul's fundamentalist church, who are worried about his soul. As the summer progresses, Paul learns the secrets of his small Minnesota town and discovers that he's ready to have a few secrets of his own. With richly developed characters and a flair for arresting imagery, Will Weaver tells the story of the end of one boy's innocence, unfolding at a time when the country as a whole is undergoing a difficult, deeply disturbing coming-of-age.
