This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 4 Tm; writings of Burns - his Poems, Songs, and Letters - are most of them so expressly the coinage of his immediate experiences and feelings, that his life might be read in them alone. As hitherto arranged, each series might be likened to a fragmentary view of the Poet's life, supplementary to the meagre memoir usually prefixed. So arranged, the biographic effect of the whole is either imperfectly developed, or lost by dissipation. It occurred to me - and I find that the same idea had latterly occurred to Allan Cunningham - that if the various compositions were strung in strict chronological order upon the memoir, they might be made to render up the whole light which they are qualified to throw upon the history of the life and mental progress of Burns, at the same time that a new significancy was given to them by their being read in connection with the current of events and emotions which led to their production. Such is the plan here adopted, and the menlt is not merely a great amount of new biographical detail, but a new sense, efficacy, and feeling, in the writings of the Poet himself.' This quotation from the preface to the first edition of Dr Robert Chambers's Life and Works of Robert Burns fully explains the spirit in which that work was undertaken, and the plan in accordance with which it was carried out. The forty-five years that have passed since these words were written have signally proved their wisdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Works of Robert Burns Vol 1 of 4

Download or read book Works of Robert Burns Vol 1 of 4 written by Allan Cunningham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 4: With His Life With something of hope and fear, I aj'er this work to my country. I have endeavoured to relate the checgueredfor tunes, delineate the character, and trace the Illustrious Peas ant with candor and accuracy his farming speculati - excise schemes - political feelings and poetic musings are discussed with a fulness not common to biography and his sharp lampoons and personal sallies are alluded to with all possible tenderness to the living and respect for the dead In writing the Poet's Life I have availed myself of his un published journals, private letters, manuscript verses, and of well-authenticated anecdotes and traits of character sup plied by his friends; and I have arranged his works as much as might be in the order of their composition, and ii lustrated them with such notes, critical, historical, and bio graphical, as seemed necessary. Of verse, one hundred and odd pieces will be found in this edition, more'than Cur rie's octavo contains. The number of letters, too, are ma terially increased - but nothing is admitted which bears not the true Burns' stamp. The embellishments are of high merit: the portrait of the Poet has called forth the commen dation of several who had the honor of his acquaintance. Book Robert Burns and Transatlantic Culture

Download or read book Robert Burns and Transatlantic Culture written by Sharon Alker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While recent scholarship has usefully positioned Burns within the context of British Romanticism as a spokesperson of Scottish national identity, Robert Burns and Transatlantic Culture considers Burns's impact in the United States, Canada, and South America, where he has served variously as a site of cultural memory and of creative negotiation. Ambitious in its scope, the volume is divided into five sections that explore: transatlantic concerns in Burns's own work, Burns's early publication in North America, Burns's reception in the Americas, Burns's creation as a site of cultural memory, and extra-literary remediations of Burns, including contemporary digital representations. By tracing the transatlantic modulations of the poet and songwriter and his works, Robert Burns and Transatlantic Culture sheds new light on the circuits connecting Scotland and Britain with the evolving cultures of the Americas from the late eighteenth century to the present.
