Book excerpt: "It seems as though wherever wingshooters and dog people get together, and the talk turns to the things they read and the writers they respect, the name Steve Smith is one of the first mentioned. His biography includes over 35 years as on outdoor editor and involvement in the sporting industry. But through all of this, there was always woodcock. Smith did his graduate work on them, has hunted them in a dozen states and provinces, waits impatiently for the spring skydancing displays, and still can't sleep the night before the season opens. In the words of famed author Tom Davis: Other gamebirds excite; the woodcock beguiles. With his inimitable blend of wit, insight, expansive knowledge, and deep but lightly worn wisdom, Steve Smith beautifully chronicles his lifelong love affair with this enigmatic charmer"--Amazon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction that reconsiders, challenges, reshapes, and/or upholds national narratives of history has long been an integral aspect of Canadian literature. Works by writers of historical fiction (from early practitioners such as John Richardson to contemporary figures such as Alice Munro and George Elliott Clarke) propose new views and understandings of Canadian history and individual relationships to it. Critical evaluation of these works sheds light on the complexity of these depictions. The contributors in National Plots: Historical Fiction and Changing Ideas of Canada critically examine texts with subject matter ranging from George Vancouver’s west coast explorations to the eradication of the Beothuk in Newfoundland. Reflecting diverse methodologies and theoretical approaches, the essays seek to explicate depictions of “the historical” in individual texts and to explore larger questions relating to historical fiction as a genre with complex and divergent political motivations and goals. Although the topics of the essays vary widely, as a whole the collection raises (and answers) questions about the significance of the roles historical fiction has played within Canadian culture for nearly two centuries.

Book Mother is it Worth it

Download or read book Mother is it Worth it written by Rusley Turner and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother is it Worth it? Is a deeply emotional memoir which seeks to explore two questions. Firstly, if it’s sensible to leave prosperous careers in suburbia and move to an idyllic spot in the countryside to enjoy an unstructured, unusual life, which leads to the realisation of what is really important for a contented existence. Secondly, what would you do if a beloved family member becomes ill with a long-term disability, and you feel unable to place them in residential care? The book looks at how Rusley Turner and her husband resolved these questions, in an inspiring recollection of caring for a relative with a mental illness, with sundry other snippets about their lives including moving to the Welsh Outback. It will appeal to readers who are thinking about, or already caring for a loved one, or those considering a change of pace in life.
