Book Women of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Women of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Walter F. Adeney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of the New Testament Although this volume appears in the series which contains Dr. Horton's beautiful studies of the women of the Old Testament, I desire to state that it is not my aim to attempt a sequel to that delightful work. Fortunately any such ambitious design is precluded by the entire change of situation and atmosphere which comes in with the dawning of the Christian era. Those old-world stories of patriarchal times, familiar to us from our childhood, yet ever fresh and abounding in vivid details, demand a dramatic treatment and a picturesque setting. It is fortunate when they fall to the pen of a writer whose imaginative skill is adequate to the task of setting them out in their variegated hues. When we pass on to the New Testament we find that although women still play an important part in the history, the scenes among which they move, and the style of narrative in which these are described, are of an entirely different character. For the most part we have but the most meagre hints concerning the characters and doings of the women of the gospel and apostolic times. That is the need Of America too, and the way to have good mothers is to hold up before the sex the bright examples of those saintly women, who through faith and patience have inherited the promises. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the history of women, in religion as in other fields, is lost because it was overlooked or considered unimportant. It is therefore surprising that so many fragments of women's stories survive in the New Testament texts composed by men. Why did they include so many references to women and why are women, as a group, treated so positively by the male New Testament writers? Women in the New Testament shows how the stories of women are an integral part of the Gospel and its meaning for us. It also relays how we can respond to the challenge these women represent, whether we are men trying to understand or women trying to find our voices within the tradition of faith found in the New Testament. Chapter one discusses three women of expectant faith. Chapters two and three deal with women who are changed by Jesus. Chapter four focuses on New Testament women of influence. Chapters five and six show how women disciples spread and gave shape to the gospel message. Chapters are "Women of Expectant Faith," “Women Changed by Jesus,” “More Women Changed by Jesus,” “Women of Prominence,” “Women and Discipleship,” and “More Women and Discipleship.” Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan, PhD, teaches at St. Vincent College and St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She is the author of First and Second Corinthians from the Collegeville Bible Commentary series, author of the God Speaks to Us series of children's books, and editor of the Zacchaeus Studies: New Testament series published by The Liturgical Press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in the Apostolic Church: A Critical Study of the Evidence in the New Testament for the Prominence of Women in Early Christianity The prominent part played by women in the primitive Christian communities has not been overlooked by commentators on the New Testa ment or by writers of works on the apostolic age. But the subject cannot be said to have received the attention which its interest and importance demand. There would seem to be no book, at least in English, in which a connected and critical account of the evidence may be found. Imperfect as I feel my work to be, the present essay is an attempt to supply this need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Men and Women of the Bible: Mary Simon God bloweth where it listeth, and to her we owe one of the most majestic hymns of the Church Catholic. It mattered nothing that she was not learned after the fashion of the scribes; she had seen the angel who stands in the presence of God; it was less than nothing that she lived in a house of two rooms, since it opened into Eternity. For her Divine motherhood Mary was prepared twice - once because she had so little of the world which is seen, once because she had so much of the world which is not seen. Book Women in the New Testament World

Download or read book Women in the New Testament World written by Susan E. Hylen and published by Essentials of Biblical Studies. This book was released on 2018-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern readers of the New Testament often notice its varying ideas about women. Some passages encouraged women to be submissive and remain silent. Yet in others, women characters owned property, headed households, or spoke with approval. Women in the New Testament World helps readers understand this conflicting evidence. It argues that social norms of the time encouraged traditional feminine virtues. However, as Susan Hylen argues, women in the culture enacted these virtues in a variety of ways, including active leadership in households, associations, and cities. In contrast to earlier approaches that divided the evidence into groups that either allowed or forbade women's leadership, this book points to a tension that was pervasive across different groups and regions of the Roman world. Society widely viewed women as inferior to men yet applauded their active pursuit of familial and civic interests. Thus, it was not the case that some women led while others were silent; instead, women were praised for modesty at the same time as they exerted influence in their communities. Elaborating on this rich historical background, Hylen illuminates new possibilities in New Testament texts.

A. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consisting of Biographical and Descriptive Sketches of the Representative and More Important Women of Old Testament and New Testament Times, as Viewed in the Light of Our Present Day Civilization It is said the preface is the last part of the book that is written and this is usually done when the rest of the book is in type. I have word from the printer that this must be furnished at once. Why did I write this book? When I was in the midst of the work, I could easily have told, but can I now when the excitement of authorship has passed away? When I came into the Church of which I am at present a member, there was a religious paper published which made its weekly visits, but very little book literature. But books are just as necessary as papers. They meet wants that papers cannot meet. You want them on your center table to be taken up at intervals, to be turned over when not specially busy: you want them for reading, for study, for inspiration; for the boys and girls to read on Sunday afternoons, or during the long winter evenings, when the doors are shut and the curtains down: for fathers and mothers who want to interest their children in the best of all literature, the life stories of men and women who have done their part in the world's work. Some one has said that "what the boy reads (and it is just as true of girls) determines the fiber of the man. Ruskin, a boy of four years, lay on the floor on his stomach and read the Bible by the hour. Carlyle knew the scriptures from his mother's lips before he was able to read; and Gladstone knew the stories of Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph ere he knew the paths about his father's estate." What you want to appear in the after years of the young, must be gotten unto their minds when the avenues to knowledge are all open, and there is a keen desire for information. Having experienced this lack in my early years, it has been my hope, as far as a busy life would allow, to furnish something for the young people who should come after me, to quicken their love of their own church and make them more efficient workers in it.
