Download or read book How To Attract The Wombat written by Will Cuppy and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is one of Will Cuppy's three classic “How-To’s,” considering notable birds and animals whose habits (and often existence) seem to have disturbed Cuppy (“Birds Who Can’t Even Fly,” “Optional Insects,” “Octopuses and Those Things”), as well as more mundane creatures like the frog, the gnat, and the moa, who have no visible vices but whose virtues are truly awful. Spanning the breadth of the animal kingdom, Cuppy neatly classes his observations for easy reference: Problem Mammals, Pleasures of Pond Life, Birds Who Can’t Sing and Know It. Included with 50 shorter pieces are longer meditations like ‘The Poet and the Nautilus,” “Swan-upping, Indeed!” and “How to Swat a Fly,” which codifies the essentials of this simple activity in ten hilarious principles. All this, plus over 100 delightful Nofziger drawings! But the seat of honor is, of course, occupied by the Wombat, the nocturnal star of three essays. Whether asleep in Rossetti’s silver epergne or tunneling under the lawn, the wombat never fails to fascinate Cuppy, clearly supplying his alter ego for the animal kingdom.

Download or read book I m Gonna Say It Now written by Phil Ochs and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil Ochs is known primarily as a songwriter; however, his oeuvre extends far beyond that—to short stories, poetry, criticism, journalism, and satire, all of which are included in I'm Gonna Say It Now: The Writings of Phil Ochs, which represents the majority of what Ochs wrote outside of his large circle of songs. This comprehensive tome presents another side of the famous topical songwriter, showcasing his prose and poetry from across the full span of his life. From prizewinning stories and clear-eyed reporting while a journalism major in college to music criticism, satires, and political pieces written while part of the burgeoning folk scene of New York City in the early 1960s and during the tumultuous Vietnam War era; from sharp and lyrical poems (many previously unpublished) to reviews, features, and satires written while living in Los Angeles and the final, elegiac coda writings from near the end of his life—I’m Gonna Say It Now presents the complete picture. The book includes many rare or nearly impossible to find Ochs pieces, as well as previously unpublished works sourced from the unique holdings in the Ochs Archives at the Woody Guthrie Center. Additionally, never-before-seen reproductions from Ochs’s journals, notebooks, and manuscripts provide a closer look at the hand of the artist, giving a deeper context and understanding to his writings. Never before published photographs of Ochs bestow the visual cherry on top.

Download or read book Reason in an Uncertain World written by Malcolm Keating and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reason in an Uncertain World is a guide to critical thinking with an ancient Indian philosophical tradition that took logic as seriously as it did meditation, ethics, and personal cultivation. The book explains how this tradition, known as Nyāya, brings together ways of knowing with ways of living and relieving suffering. For the Nyāya philosophers, knowing and reflecting on our knowing is an individual and communal practice. It involves vigorous debate as well as trusting reliable testifiers, seeing with our own eyes as well as drawing complex inferences about the unseen.

They have to travel far and wide to collect the ingredients for their wands. They seek opals for its rainbow colour, silver to give it strength, and water from the blue lake to mix with their own hidden spring water to activate its magic. Their two children travelled with them and like children everywhere, they are forever getting into difficulty. On one occasion they disappear into a painting and find they have to answer a riddle to escape. It was a trap set by the wizards. Later they are captured by Goblins and have to be rescued by a wombat who is a friend of the family. In their absence, an evil wizard comes to reside across from their farm where he attempts to learn the secret of their hidden spring. He is closely watched by small animals and birds who are friends of the elves. But being so small they can only watch as he discovers the whereabouts of the spring and sets a trap for the elves on their return. I feel this novel would suit children aged nine to twelve.

The ideas of some of the subject's great founding figures, such as Gottlob Frege, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, as well as of more recent figures such as Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam, are central to a great many philosophical debates to this day. In this clear and carefully structured introduction to the subject Gary Kemp explains the following key topics: the basic nature of philosophy of language, its concepts, and its historical development Frege’s theory of sense and reference; Russell's theory of definite descriptions Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Ayer, and the Logical Positivists recent perspectives including Kripke, Kaplan and Putnam; arguments concerning necessity, indexicals, rigid designation and natural kinds The pragmatics of language, including speech-acts, presupposition and conversational implicature Davidson’s theory of language, the ‘principle of charity’, and the indeterminacy of interpretation puzzles surrounding the propositional attitudes (sentences which ascribe beliefs to people) Quine’s naturalism and its consequences for philosophy of language. The challenges presented by the later Wittgenstein Contemporary directions, including contextualism, fictional objects and the phenomenon of slurs This second edition has been thoroughly revised to include new key topics and updated material. Chapter summaries, annotated further reading and a glossary make this an indispensable introduction to those teaching philosophy of language and will be particularly useful for students coming to the subject for the first time.
