Studien VI, XI., XII.), denen auch der Verfasser dieser Arbeit viel Belehrung verdankt; sie musste vielmehr beruhen auf einer Verwertung der gesamten schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen des Autors, soweit sie im Druck erschienen und erreichbar waren. Dabei war darauf Bedacht zu nehmen, dass, wo angangig, nur gute und zuverlassige Ausgaben zu Grunde gelegt wurden; daher ist fur die eigentlichen Werke die von Carlyle selbst durchgesehene dreiunddreissigbandige "Library Edition," London 1869 ff fur die "Reminiscences" nicht die Ausgabe von Freude, sondern die von O. E. Norton (vgl. dessen Vorrede), benutzt worden; bei den andern Schriften rechtfertigt sich die Wahl der Ausgaben von selbst dadurch, dass keine anderen vorliegen. Was nun die Arbeit selbst anbelangt, so werden zunachst einige Bemerkungen uber die gegebene Einleitung zu machen sein. Sie nimmt allerdings einen reichlich breiten Raum ein, doch liess sie sich, wollte man nicht auf Wesentliches ver zichten, nicht wohl weiter ku1zen.
