Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most exciting predictions of Einstein's theory of gravitationisthat there may exist 'black holes': putative objects whose gravitational fields are so strong that no physical bodies and signals can break free of their pull and escape. Even though a completely reliable discovery of a black hole has not yet been made, several objects among those scrutinized by astrophysicists will very likely be conformed as black holes. The proof that they do exist, and an analysis of their properties, would have a significance going far beyond astrophysics. Indeed, what is involved is not just the discovery of yet another, even if extremely remarkable, astrophysical object, but a test of the correctness of our understanding the properties of space and time in extremely strong gravitational fields. Theoretical research into the properties of black holes and into the possible corollaries of the hypothesis that they exist, has been carried out with special vigor since the beginning of the 1970s. In addition to those specific features of black holes that are important for the interpretation of their possible astrophysical manifestations, the theory has revealed a nurober of unexpected characteristics of physical interactions involving black holes. By now, a fairly detailed understanding has been achieved of the properties of the black holes, their possible astrophysical manifestations, and the specifics of the various physical processes involved. Furthermore, profound links were found between black-hole theory and such seemingly very distant fields as thermodynamics, information theory, and quantum theory.

Book Secrets of Black Holes

Download or read book Secrets of Black Holes written by Rajeev Raghuram and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though discovered by scientists only a few decades ago, black holes have become a major object of public fascination and speculation. But how do black holes actually work? And how do they drive the processes we observe in the universe? Black Holes, the second book in an ongoing astronomy series by Rajeev Raghuram, gives an informed overview of black hole physics, spacetime, and the impact of this phenomenon on our universe. Written for a young adult audience, this book synthesizes the latest scientific discoveries and the equations that describe them, presenting this complex, fascinating information in highly accessible terms. Key topics include how black holes form; how they interact with one another; the methods that scientists use to study them; and the physics of spacetime that explain the structure of black holes and point to the possibility of wormholes—even other universes! Equations fundamental to understanding black holes are explained in detail, and numerous diagrams illustrate what happens inside them and how they relate to time and other universes.

Book The Lighter Side of Gravity

Download or read book The Lighter Side of Gravity written by Jayant Vishnu Narlikar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-10-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gravity is the most enigmatic of all known basic forces in nature. Yet it controls everything from the motion of ocean tides to the expansion of the entire Universe. Many books use technical jargon and high-powered maths to explain what gravity is all about. In The Lighter Side of Gravity, the presentation is beautifully clear and completely non-technical. Familiar analogies, interesting anecdotes and numerous illustrations are used throughout to get across subtle effects and difficult points. The coverage is, however, comprehensive and makes no compromise with accuracy. This second edition has been brought completely up to date and expanded to include the discovery of gigantic gravitational lenses in space, the findings of the COBE satellite, the detection of MACHOS, the investigations of the very early Universe and other new ideas in cosmology. In short, this lucid and stimulating book presents 'the lighter side' of the intriguing phenomena of 'gravity' to the student and general reader.

Book Physics and Astrophysics

Download or read book Physics and Astrophysics written by Subal Kar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics and Astrophysics—Glimpses of the Progress provides a comprehensive account of physics and astrophysics from the time of Aristotle to the modern era of Stephen Hawking and beyond. It takes the readers of all ages through a pleasant journey touching on the major discoveries and inventions that have taken place in both the macro-world, including that in the cosmos, and the micro-world of atomic and subatomic particles related to physics and astrophysics. Use of historical perspective and anecdote makes the storytelling on the progress of physics and astrophysics both interesting and absorbing. While peering through different developments in these fields, the book never compromises with the sanctity of the scientific content, including the depth and beauty of the physical concept of the topics concerned and the philosophical viewpoints they represent. Where appropriate, the book also delves into value judgments of life that affect our civilization. Features The intricate concepts of physics and astrophysics are explained in simple terms and in easy-to-understand language. Physics and astrophysics are discussed in a connected and correlated way in a single volume of comprehensive size but in totality, which to date is the unique feature of this book. Starting with Aristotle’s Physics and going through the work of Newton, Einstein, Schrödinger, Hubble, Hewish, Hawking, and others, including the present research on dark energy, dark matter, and the fifth force of nature, the reader will be kept absorbed and spellbound. In addition to the fundamental principles of Newtonian mechanics, Einstein’s relativity, quantum mechanics, string theory, loop quantum gravity, and so on, the cutting-edge technologies of recent times, such as the Large Hadron Collider, Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, and Event Horizon Telescope, are also explored. Download or read book Relativistic Astrophysics 2 written by I︠A︡kov Borisovich Zelʹdovich and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the kinematics of the evolving universe became known decades ago, research into the physics of processes occurring in the expanding universe received a reliable observational and theoretical basis only in more recent years. These achievements have led in turn to the emergence of new problems, on which an unusually active assault has begun. This second volume of Relativistic Astrophysics provides a remarkably complete picture of the present state of cosmology. It is a synthesis of the theoretical foundations of contemporary cosmology, which are derived from work in relativity, plasma theory, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and particle physics. It presents the theoretical work that explains, describes, and predicts the nature of the universe, the physical process that occur in it, the formation of galaxies, the synthesis of the light elements, and the cosmological singularity and the theory of gravitation. This book, long and eagerly awaited, is essential for everyone whose work is related to cosmology and astrophysics.
