Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an upcoming election, Chávez's involvement with U.S. oil exports, and the country becoming a leader of an increasingly united South America, this volume provides necessary background information to understand how Venezuela became what it is today. The history begins with Columbus's third voyage of discovery from Spain. Spanish explorers named the land "Little Venice" for the native homes built on stilts at the water's edge. Tracing the nation's 300 years as a Spanish colony through a brief unification followed by civil war, Tarver brings Venezuela's dramatic history to life. Highlighting events including the discovery of oil in the 1900s and the establishment of democratic government in 1958, Tarver offers a comprehensive chronicle that contextualizes the current unrest under the leadership of Hugo Chávez.

Book United States and Venezuela

Download or read book United States and Venezuela written by Carlos A. Romero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil makes up one-third of Venezuela's entire GDP, and the United States is far and away Venezuela's largest trading partner. Relations between Venezuela and the United States, traditionally close for most of the last two centuries, began to fray in the last decade as the end of the Cold War altered the international environment. The United States and Venezuela attempts to place the events of the past ten years in historical perspective and to explain the reasons why the changes occurred. It also examines the impact of new actors on the international scene: drug traffickers, common citizens, human rights and environmental activists and the media.

Book R mulo Betancourt

Download or read book R mulo Betancourt written by Germán Carrera Damas and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available here for the first time in English, Rómulo Betancourt has been a Spanish-language classic in Venezuela since its publication in 2013. This book is an extended essay on a transformational figure in the country’s history from an internationally-renowned public intellectual, Germán Carrera Damas. In this work, Carrera Damas captures a significant transition for the nation that began in the 1940s when Rómulo Betancourt and his colleagues overthrew the ruling military dictatorship and established a modern democratic regime. However, the system Betancourt created eventually deteriorated after his presidency. Carrera Damas not only delves into the evolving political thought of a leader who remained dedicated to his cause throughout a varied career, but also offers insights on what it takes to create and sustain a democratic republic under difficult circumstances. As the country’s current economic and political crisis intensifies, this book will help English speakers understand the cultural context of Venezuela’s contemporary moment as well as set a historical precedent for the next stages in the development of its position in the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old idea with a new application The theory of recapitulation was a popular idea in the 19th century applied to biological revolution. Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny""-is an historical hypothesis that the development of the embryo (ontogeny), goes through stages resembling the evolution of the animal's remote ancestors (phylogeny). Although the theory has been debunked in biology, aspects of the theory survive in other applications such as cognitive developement and art theory. I am applying the theory of recapitulation in a new way to a theory of historical/cultural consciousness on a collective level. This is an expansion of Carl Jung's application of the theory to individual psychological development and Jean Piaget's parallel theory as applied to educational development.

Book The Rise and Fall of the Oil Nation Venezuela

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Oil Nation Venezuela written by Carlos A. Rossi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why Venezuela is so rich in natural resources—it has been producing oil since 1922 and harbors the largest oil reserves in the world—and yet it is also a failed nation of class-divided citizens exhibiting deep poverty in a corrupt, incompetent state. Venezuela is a bipolar nation, where two marked poles in the society exist which have historical origins and are mutually exclusive. The book provides a critical analysis of Venezuela's history, economy and politics and explains the context and implications of the bipolar poles, known as the elite pole and the resentful pole. Both, it shows, have done serious harm to Venezuela’s prosperity. The author describes the vicious circle of oil wealth, corruption, inefficiency and world market dependency and gives recommendations for a better future.
