Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Bond became the first Warrensburg settler, when he arrived in the Echo Lake area, in 1787. Shortly thereafter, Warrensburg became known as "the Bridge" because it was the location of the only bridge in the area that crossed the Schroon River. In February 1813, the town of Warrensburg was formed from part of Thurman. By the mid-1800s, A. C. Emerson and B. P. Burhans had moved to Warrensburg and begun to harness the waterpower of the Schroon River and utilize the nearby timber resource. The Emerson sawmill and Burhans's tannery and gristmill provided employment and capital to support a growing and thriving town. Other industries, such as a woolen mill and pants factory, sash and blind factory, shirt factory, and shoe peg factory, soon followed. With the dawn of the 20th century, improved transportation in the form of railroads and the automobile began bringing more people to Warren County. This trend continues today as numerous visitors summer in the Adirondacks to enjoy the clean air and water of the north country.

Book The Quest for the Eastern Cougar

Download or read book The Quest for the Eastern Cougar written by Robert Tougias and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is There This Beast In Our Midst? What is it about cougars? Why does this phantom of the eastern woods stimulate such passion among so many people? For decades wildlife biologists have been telling us that they do not exist east of the Mississippi and yet each year there are hundreds of people claiming to have seen one. Is there any truth to these claims, or are they misidentifications, wishful thinking or tall tales? Nature writer Robert Tougias journeys deep into the world of the cougar and into the reasoning of those that believe they exist and those that do not. The Quest For The Eastern Cougar: Extinction or Survival? is an informative voice of reason that quiets the confusion regarding the powerful predator. It tells us about the cats historic demise and alleged modern human encounters. The scientific explanations as to why one ought to believe or dismiss the cougars presence are unraveled. It discusses the ultimate question: whether or not cougars have survived in the East or have already left us. No matter what you choose to believe, cougars are likely to continue to make the news. Cougars are turning up in unthinkable places these days, attacks are becoming more frequent out West, eastern sightings have increased and are beginning to offer better evidence. We will be hearing much more about these powerful carnivores, and in the not too distant future we will see more of them. Are there cougars lurking in your back woodlot? Is the East ready for this magnificent predator? In this readable, well-researched book, Robert Tougias has made a valuable and timely contribution to the public and scientific discourse about mountain lions in the East and the potential for their recovery. This book deserves to be widely read by conservationists, researchers, policy makers and anyone interested in America's lion." Christopher Papouchis Conservation Biologist Mountain Lion Foundation Sacramento, CA Robert Tougias sheds much-needed light on one of Americas most intriguing wildlife mysteries. This book is for anyone whos ever wondered about the creatures that haunt our forests and our collective imagination. David Baron Author- Beast In The Garden Norton Publishing

Book excerpt: Explores the architectural treasures of the Southern-Central region of New York’s Adirondack Park and places them in the context of Adirondack history and culture. The Adirondack Architecture Guide, Southern-Central Region provides a professional and insightful survey of the built environment of a unique area within New York’s Adirondack Park. This book is the first field guide to the architecture of the Park, revealing the ordinary and the extraordinary, the remarkable buildings by prominent designers, as well as the hidden, unexpected gems few know exist. Based on more than seven thousand miles of fieldwork and years of research, the guide comprises more than seven hundred sites traversing the geographic range, socioeconomic strata, and historical span of the region from the late 1700s to the present. Organized according to clearly marked travel routes and fourteen tours on the ground and on the water, it features detailed maps and coordinates for each site, along with many beautiful photographs. Also included are eleven companion essays drawing on the expertise of professionals, local historians, and Adirondack residents that delve into the what, where, and why people built in the Adirondacks. “In The Adirondack Architecture Guide, beloved landmarks share the pages with little-known architectural gems through a series of curated tours. Each one tracks the history and development of the Southern-Central Adirondacks through its fascinating buildings, bridges, and byways. From first-time visitors to longtime residents, readers will find it packed with information designed to make the most of a side trip lasting a few hours or a weekend of exploring. This is a must-have source to guide your travels in one of the most beautiful and historic parts of New York, the Adirondack Park.” — Jay A. DiLorenzo, President, Preservation League of New York State “This remarkable book presents architecture, broadly defined to include all man-made structures, as the key to understanding the history and culture of a vast National Historic Landmark. We are introduced to the sublime Chestertown Church of the Good Shepherd, the delightful Custard’s Last Stand, the earnest Wakely Mountain Fire Tower, and the grand aspirations of the Mary Persons House. A detailed picture of two hundred years in a region of romantic wilderness, industry, tourism, and everyday life emerges to offer a compelling vision of a unique place.
