Book Royal Wills in Britain from 1509 to 2008

Download or read book Royal Wills in Britain from 1509 to 2008 written by Michael L. Nash and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on Royal Wills since 1780 and aims to take over where the previous ones (in 1775 and 1780) left off. Therefore the period 1509 to 2008 is covered. It aims to uncover the many dilemmas and conundrums they have had to deal with, against a backdrop of Imperial splendor and political strife, society scandals and in later instances, a disintegrating infrastructure. This period covers the wills of Henry VIII, Edward VI and George I, which all sought to divert the accepted rules of succession; the wills of Queen Charlotte and George III, which brought into sharp focus the differences between State and Personal property; and the wills from Prince Albert to the present day (with a few exceptions) which sought to exclude the public from seeing their contents, in devices known as ‘closing’ and ‘sealing up’ the wills. The authority by which the latter was done has been seriously questioned in signal cases in 2007 and 2008. Sources drawn upon include not only the Royal Archives, but the Kilmorey Papers in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, and the Teck Letters in Wellington College, where Prince Frank received much of his early education. The sealed will of Prince Frank of Teck, the brother of Queen Mary and great-uncle of the present Queen, is the seminal chapter in this study.

Book Wills and Will making in Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Wills and Will making in Anglo Saxon England written by Linda Tollerton and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2011 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the implications and practices of wills and will-making in Anglo-Saxon society, and of the varieties of inheritance strategies and commemorative arrangements adopted. A remarkable series of Anglo-Saxon wills have survived, spanning the period from the beginning of the ninth century to the years immediately following the Norman Conquest. Written in Old English, they reflect the significance of the vernacular, not only in royal administration during this period, but in the recording of a range of individual transactions. They show wealthy laymen and women, and clerics, from kings and bishops to those of thegnly status, disposing of land and chattels, and recognising ties of kinship, friendship, lordship and service through their bequests; and whilst land is of prime importance, the mention in some wills of such valuable items as tableware, furnishings, clothing, jewellery and weapons provides an insight into lifestyle at the time. Despite their importance, no study has hitherto been specifically devoted to Anglo-Saxon wills in their social and historical context, a gap which this book aims to fill. While the wills themselves can be vague and allusive, by establishing patterns of bequeathing, and by drawing on other resources, the author sheds light on the factors which influenced men and womenin making appropriate provision for their property. Linda Tollerton gained her PhD from the University of York.

Book Wills and Administrations of Elizabeth City County Virginia 1688 1800 with Other Genealogical and Historical Items

Download or read book Wills and Administrations of Elizabeth City County Virginia 1688 1800 with Other Genealogical and Historical Items written by Blanche Adams Chapman and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1980 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to an unfortunate error in Clayton Torrence's Virginia Wills and Administrations it is widely believed that the early probate records of Elizabeth City County do not exist. This present volume is in large part a correction of that error, and indeed the bulk of it is devoted to abstracts of the county's wills and administrations for the period 1688 to 1800. As an aid to research in the county (now the independent city of Hampton), this work further includes such items as an index to land patents, the quit rent rolls for 1704, tithables of 1782, soldiers of 1776, marriage records, and lists of burgesses, justices, sheriffs, clerks, surveyors, and much else besides.

Diamond who is cursed, compliments of Seamus and Gema, must choose between a life of loneliness or dangerous love. Kara discovers her true identity as the Red Companion during a brief sojourn with the Dragon Warriors. And one of Karl’s Gifted almost gets murdered by a creature who used to be Gallo. The Blue, Red and Black Companions are all on their way to the Castle. However, bounty hunters, Destroyers, demons, Hagos, and Creepers sent by Klastos hunt them down, and go into fiery battle. In the meantime, Opal, Wagner and Pop Tolenko must perform a Rite of Unity to evade soldiers, and Ethos demands that Uhna betray her husband or die under the Athany curse. In this third book of the series, lives are lost, new allies join the Companions and Magi, and they are trapped in a web of terror woven by the impending civil war between the Falesto brothers. The lives of all races in the Empire are teetering on the edge of destruction, and the Gifted Magi must unite before the Falestos’ plots to transform all non-humans into walking demons to fight the expansion battles become a reality. Clashes of Wills is the third book in the Assembly of Thirteen series where the magic of the few with honor repeatedly clash with the cruelty of the wills of those in power.
