Book excerpt: There’s a crisis of trust in politics across the western world. Public anger is rising and faith in conventional political leaders and parties is falling. Anti-politics, and the anti-politicians, have arrived. In Enough Said, President and CEO of The New York Times Company Mark Thompson argues that one of the most significant causes of the crisis is the way our public language has changed. Enough Said tells the story of how we got from the language of FDR and Churchill to that of Donald Trump. It forensically examines the public language we’ve been left with: compressed, immediate, sometimes brilliantly impactful, but robbed of most of its explanatory power. It studies the rhetoric of western leaders from Reagan and Thatcher to Berlesconi, Blair, and today’s political elites on both sides of the Atlantic. And it charts how a changing public language has interacted with real world events – Iraq, the financial crash, the UK's surprising Brexit from the EU, immigration – and led to a mutual breakdown of trust between politicians and journalists, to leave ordinary citizens suspicious, bitter, and increasingly unwilling to believe anybody. Drawing from classical as well as contemporary examples and ranging across politics, business, science, technology, and the arts, Enough Said is a smart and shrewd look at the erosion of language by an author uniquely placed to measure its consequences.

Book Developing Leaders

Download or read book Developing Leaders written by Mary Hladio and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to close the gap between job satisfaction and genuine engagement—and create training and development plans that produce passionate leaders. Many companies and managers fall back on traditional and standardized training events when trying to improve upon broad areas that can’t really be managed—such as change, time, and stress. Mary Hladio knows that these approaches don’t work and the numbers prove she’s right. Research by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) shows that while over eighty percent of employees are generally satisfied with their current positions, less than seventy percent feel passion and excitement for their job, and just over half feel tuned in at work. That’s a thirty percent drop-off between satisfaction and engagement. To properly influence culture in a way that results in better engagement, business owners and company executives must first understand what optimal engagement would look like in their company, and that’s what Developing Leaders is all about. It is not simply designed to show people the problems with their current approaches, but to provide workable solutions—and a blueprint for how to link a company’s development objectives to their corporate strategy as a precursor to creating any developmental plan. “Hladio tackles one of the most critical components of your success. You will begin to learn both how to be a leader and how to identify others as true and worthy leaders.” —Jim Stovall, bestselling author of The Ultimate Gift

I am a Turkish Muslim women, living in Europe. In this work you will find reflections and expressions from my heart, about every day subjects that made me think, cry and laugh. I believe that life is all about a constant War against our bad inner desires, the Jihad against the Nafs. As long as we do not sit down for a moment and ask ourselves where, how and why has it gone wrong, then the hate, fighting, wars will never end. To change the world, we have to start first with changing the I. Nobody can change the I, except the I itself. Long live the snake as long as it does not bite me Beni sokmayan yilan bin yasasin is an expression, that I want to use for people, who are indifferent about pains and sufferings of others, as long as it does not concern them. Acting like the three monkeys against injustice, will not bring any benefit to any of us, because a snake is a snake, It will poison without particularizing. Fatma Yardimsever-Hakalmaz

Book Something Has Gone Wrong

Download or read book Something Has Gone Wrong written by Steve Ramsey and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 12 October 1984, an IRA bomb exploded inside Brighton's Grand Hotel, killing five people and injuring thirty. It was an assassination attempt on Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet, who were staying there for the Conservative party conference. While the bombing was deplorable, the story of how people reacted to it is an inspiring one. People refused to be beaten by what had happened; they got on with their jobs and their lives – a theme with, sadly, a strong resonance in present-day Britain. In Something Has Gone Wrong, Brighton journalist Steve Ramsey speaks to those who were there on the day and involved in its aftermath, many of whom have never spoken publicly about it before. His interviewees include: firemen who worked on the long rescue operation; medics from the local hospital; police officers who rushed to the scene; detectives who played key roles in the criminal investigation; and cabinet ministers and high-ranking civil servants, who describe how the conference continued and how the government pursued business as usual. Incorporating fascinating new insights and information, the author has produced a portrait of this shocking event which combines narrative clarity with the vividness of oral history, and reads like a thriller.

Book Democracy in America

Download or read book Democracy in America written by Benjamin I. Page and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America faces daunting problems—stagnant wages, high health care costs, neglected schools, deteriorating public services. How did we get here? Through decades of dysfunctional government. In Democracy in America? veteran political observers Benjamin I. Page and Martin Gilens marshal an unprecedented array of evidence to show that while other countries have responded to a rapidly changing economy by helping people who’ve been left behind, the United States has failed to do so. Instead, we have actually exacerbated inequality, enriching corporations and the wealthy while leaving ordinary citizens to fend for themselves. What’s the solution? More democracy. More opportunities for citizens to shape what their government does. To repair our democracy, Page and Gilens argue, we must change the way we choose candidates and conduct our elections, reform our governing institutions, and curb the power of money in politics. By doing so, we can reduce polarization and gridlock, address pressing challenges, and enact policies that truly reflect the interests of average Americans. Updated with new information, this book lays out a set of proposals that would boost citizen participation, curb the power of money, and democratize the House and Senate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 Since the 1960s, ideas developed during the civil rights movement have been astonishingly successful in fighting overt discrimination and prejudice. But how successful are they at combating the whole spectrum of social injustice-including conditions that aren't directly caused by bigotry? How do they stand up to segregation, for instance-a legacy of racism, but not the direct result of ongoing discrimination? It's tempting to believe that civil rights litigation can combat these social ills as efficiently as it has fought blatant discrimination. In Rights Gone Wrong, Richard Thompson Ford, author of the New York Times Notable Book The Race Card, argues that this is seldom the case. Civil rights do too much and not enough: opportunists use them to get a competitive edge in schools and job markets, while special-interest groups use them to demand special privileges. Extremists on both the left and the right have hijacked civil rights for personal advantage. Worst of all, their theatrics have drawn attention away from more serious social injustices. Ford, a professor of law at Stanford University, shows us the many ways in which civil rights can go terribly wrong. He examines newsworthy lawsuits with shrewdness and humor, proving that the distinction between civil rights and personal entitlements is often anything but clear. Finally, he reveals how many of today's social injustices actually can't be remedied by civil rights law, and demands more creative and nuanced solutions. In order to live up to the legacy of the civil rights movement, we must renew our commitment to civil rights, and move beyond them.

Book Ritual Gone Wrong

Download or read book Ritual Gone Wrong written by Kathryn T. McClymond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of religious studies has historically tended to focus on discrete ritual mistakes occurring in the context of individual performances as outlined in ethnographic or sociological studies; scholars have largely overlooked the extensive discussions of ritual mistakes that exist in the religious literature of indigenous traditions. And yet ritual mistakes (ranging from the simple to the complex) happen all the time, and they continue to carry ritual "weight," even when no one seriously doubts their impact on the efficacy of a ritual. In Ritual Gone Wrong, Kathryn McClymond approaches ritual mistakes as an integral part of ritual life and argues that religious traditions can accommodate mistakes and are often prepared for them. McClymond shows that many traditions even incorporate the regular occurrence of errors into their ritual systems, developing a substantial literature on how rituals can be disrupted, how these disruptions can be addressed, and when disruptions have gone too far. Offering a series of case studies ranging from ancient India to modern day Iraq, and from medieval allegations of child sacrifice to contemporary Olympic ceremonies, McClymond explores the numerous ways in which ritual can go wrong, and demonstrates that the ritual is by nature fluid, supple, and dynamic-simultaneously adapting to socio-cultural conditions and, in some cases, shaping them.

Just as disheartening, walking over and ignoring the "little" people that might get in the way. The same can be said of the rest of society! Since it seems too many have left the church and have sacrificed their integrity, wishing to live only for the moment. Anyway, this book--and the others that follow, are my attempt to get them to right their wrongs and return to the desired pathway that will lead them Homeward.
